It's usually the way cooking fires start (although direct burning from gas flames can also happen).

Indeed! I've been to quite a few fires caused by the spontaneous combustion of tea towels over the years! 🔥

Fun fact heat from decomposition can make a hay bale or pile spontainiously catch fire anytime you have heat, if you put abunch of linseed oil rags into somthing like a styrofoam cooler they would likely smolder and catch fire when u took the lid off

is spontaneous combustion the same thing as autoignition ?

Yes. They mean the same thing 🙂

Hi Matt, great videos, I've watched the previous three episodes, just wonder does fire only happen with a hydrocarbon fuel, what happen in the combustion reaction to object that is non-hydrocarbon ?

Hi Fabian. Glad you like the videos so far. The most recent video I've uploaded may help a little. It's about magnesium burning (which is an element in its own right). Fire can happen with many different elements which are not hydrocarbons. Fire is essentially a very fast oxidation reaction. It just so happens that on our planet hydrocarbons are very common so they were an easy choice to use as an example 🙂

Ahh, I know that particular reaction all too well - can be a bit unpredictable in terms of timing!

It can a bit hey!! But worth the wait!

Is that an old carbon tetrachloride extinguisher behind you ???

Interesting! I was under the impression it was an old soda acid type or something similar (the label is damaged beyond recognition). It was given to me empty and cleaned out. But I might look into it a bit further. Thanks!
