Thanks so much for putting this video up! It’s really helped to demystify the whole process for me :-) does it matter if the compression testing kit is made for boat engines versus car and motorcycle engines? Been looking on eBay and only been able to find ones for car and motorcycle engines. One of those should work fine though, yeah?
I didn't quite get what you were saying about the coil wire or grounding the plugs. Could you elaborate? Do you mean disconnect the coil wire? Or how do I ground the spark plug wires? Ground all of the plug wires? Sorry for the newbie questions, but I don't want to damage my motor. Thanks!
You send a thick wire from the spark plug boot to a ground on the motor. Some people dont bother with it but its supposed to prevent damage to your ignition system
I have a 120hp force and i dont get any compression reading at all. I had the throttle wide open but it doesnt run so i couldnt warm it up either. Why do you pull all the plugs instead of just pulling the plug from the hole your testing? Im new to the boat stuff lol
You have 0 compression on all the cylinders, or just 1? If it is on all of them, recheck your equipment or your testing process, it is definitely unusual. You pull out all the plugs to get a peak reading so the starter motor and battery can get the flywheel spinning faster, it does not need to build compression on the untested cylinders and can therefore give a higher reading on the tested cylinder
its cold out and i did a compression check after a warm up. i couldnt let it warm up to long because impeller is toast. all my readings were mid 80's but i didnt know to open the carbs. what kind of difference in numbers can that make. im gonna try again tommorow
I sent my 2 cylinder outboard 2 stroke 60hp yamaha 1983 for service and he said mine was boarder line 110 psi on both then he said one was 90 psi a couple of days later i think he’s having me at it
@@mrmaxstoreyI won't be able to do wide open throttle unless I take it out nuetrul on my controls could I not just do the compression test with out WOT thanks for getting back to me so quickly 😊
Great information, nooo rambling on about nothing. Thank you great video!!!
Thanks again Max, another great instructional video.
Great video! Thank you for sharing, we learning something new all the time with you.
Best Compression Test Video on UA-cam..Thanks Max... JP

The gauges are the same just get one with a kit with a couple different adapter ends, because not all spark plug holes are the same size
mrmaxstorey awesome, really appreciate the reply back!
Can I just unplug the gas and run it out if gas instead of unplugging the coil? Great vids btw.
Whatever you want to do. I usually just bend the wires away from the block so they cant spark or jam some tape in the spark plug boot

@@mrmaxstorey I have watched more than ten compression testing videos now but I still don't understand 😔
@@wesleylam4830 ok what do you not understand

Good video. How do you get oil into the cylinders on a two stroke that has been sitting?
Take out the plugs, tilt it up so the plug holes point to the sky, and pour in some oil
Could you send me a picture of a ignition coil thanks

usually its only going to bump you up 5psi or so per but sometimes i find its really significant

Great video I have a 75 evinrude that I am having problems is there any way I can get a contact really need some experience
Any luck?
outboard videos 👌
Where / how do you ground out the plug wires? Thanks
You can either just disconnect the ignition coils, or run a stout wire from the spark plug wire to a good ground on the motor
With regards to comp test. What do you do spark plug wise if you have two spark plugs per cylinder?
Remove all the spark plug wires, but only remove one spark plug per cylinder
Do you leave it neutral when checking compression ?
Or do I put in wide open throttle when checking compression ?
@@robert-eh1ky yes neutral and yes wide open throttle

@@robert-eh1ky ok then just advance the high idle lever on your controls, or pop the control lever into neutral operation and open the throttle
