  • All of my videos have been about metal handplanes and transitional handplanes. This video is about the four wooden handplanes that I own and it includes a brief demonstration of how to adjust the cutter. The four planes are an Ogontz coffin smoothing plane, a Scioto Works razee jack plane, an Auburn Tool Co. jointer plane, and a Randall & Cook jointer plane. I believe that the Randall and Cook jointer plane is the oldest plane that I own, 184 years young. Enjoy!

I remember in one of James Krenov's books, on the topic of handplanes, he said something to the effect that 'metal planes are ok, but they will never "sing" like a wooden plane'

I am working on a coffin plane ,that I think is from Ohio tool works . I have used a lot of epoxy and wood glue. It had nails and some other metal holding it together. I have laminated a new soul onto it.Probably was not worth the effort, but was given to me by a friend with good intentions. So I feel compelled to make an honest effort. Part of its problem was a blade and wedge that were a bit to wide . Liked your video on the wooden planes. L have several that I have restored or made.

This is a similar situation to my grandfather's plane. Enough sentimental value that I didn't want to abandon it, even though it had no blade.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

It is nice to see wooden planes getting more recognition online. To your point about not needing premium brands - I have no access to old planes, but I have access to newly made, very cheap german style wooden planes and they are very much a diamond in the rough - beech body with hornbeam soles, thick irons that last quite long ( I dont know the particular kind of steel, but they behave quite well, reasonably long intial sharpness and they stay very long in the "woodworking sharp" territory - they will not cut hair, but will plane just fine). Now, I had to spend some time on each one to put them into working condition, but they work like a charm. Now I have a whole fleet. I think there were no powertools, wooden planes would make quite a comeback since they are so much easier to use for prolonged periods of time.

Thanks for your comments! I think that more people will give them a try. My first experience with wooden planes was not great, because I didn't know what I was doing. Now that we have the internet, that is not really a problem any more.

@@MarkSLSmith1 I hope so, they advantage of adjusting the plane body to fit exactly my hand has been great and like you say, now that the internet is a thing everything is easy especially with so many people and differenet approaches they provide, everyone eventually finds something they will gravitate towards. I struggled with tuning handplanes into working condition for long while (I have no prior experience, I learned everything online or from books) until I found channel called mr. chickadee - very practical tips on handplanes and when I watched his videos many things started clicking although I might hear similar information from other sources prior, he just had very straightforward an concise way of explaing the important details I would othervise miss.

I have a few wooden planes. They're all pretty how ya doing. Years ago you could get them for the price of firewood. Now whenever I see one people think they're selling something of value.
