This is often a tricky situation indeed. You explain it really well. Also love you jazzy intro. Regards from Belgium.

You have to be brave, bold and read the overhead well.
You can't always blow the whistle early...sometimes allow situations to unravel.
Example: @5:30 on the video, with a ball in the air, if it was a high ball, long ball and the projection of the ball is landing on the attacker's stick (yellow player) then the defender (red player) needs to retreat 5M away from the attacker for control.

A player lofts the ball to fall onto the position of two players of opposing teams. Free awarded against the player who raised the ball. Why then do you want to contradict the Rule which states a free ball must be taken from within playing distance of the offence - possibly giving the offending team a huge space advantage? There is nothing in Rule 9.10 to indicate that in these circumstances the free should be taken where the ball falls. Rule 9.8 states that where there is play leading to dangerous play the free ball must be awarded where the danger was caused. (In this case that is where the ball was raised from). I think the interpretation you gave originated with a Canadian umpire named Keely Dunn - and if it did it should be ignored.
This might amuse you. It has nothing at all to do with the published Rules but it's top level.
