US aid has already become a 'defeat for Putin' as incoming resupply has freed up current Ukrainian ammunition from precautionary rationing, Professor Scott Lucas tells Frontline on #timesradio

Biden said today that Ukrainian troops at the front line cheered, when the House passed the military aid bill. Apparently they had been watching the vote on the internet. This aid from the US is absolutely critical to their effort to drive back Putin's invasion of their beloved country.

They were waving American flags on the front yesterday. These are guys that are dying for THEIR country, flying a US flag. Anyone who thinks Ukrainians should be "more grateful," they feel every shred of US support, when it comes.

It has also been credibly reported that Johnson met with a fellow Evangelical Christian, a Ukrainian man who had lost both his wife and daughter in the war. I suspect that hearing this man’s personal story brought it home. I am grateful to whoever thought of bringing them together, because seeing that his “brothers in Christ” are affected may have given him the moral backbone to stand up to the extremists.

    • @TheMrCougarful

Well, don't. Lucas does not understand American politics nor politicians nor people. Lucas, in his brief and erroneous explanation of the 'stalled' aid package, failed to even mention American's porous southern border. We Americans are desperate to close our southern border. Linking that action to the aid package was an act of desperation, meant to persuade the Democrats to finally secure the border. Only a small handful of Republican legislators failed to understand the serious implications of a Ukrainian loss to Russia. The American taxpayer has been protecting Europe for over 80 years and is about ready for Europe to start paying for its own defense. Professor Lucas correctly identifies the agreed 2% commitment for defense by European nations but makes light of the fact that some nations still do not contribute 2%. Well, if defense of Europe against Russian aggression requires 3% of each nation's budget, Europe better up it's 'ante'. Trump has never threatened to remove the US from NATO, but he has been rather firm about the other European nations paying what they agreed to pay. He's not even requiring those reprobate countries to pay up those amounts they are in arrears. I remind Mr. Lucas that there are thousands and thousands of young Americans in the flower of their youth, buried in cemeteries throughout Europe!

Hah! That is so interesting to hear that take on Duda. Great analysis.
I think the headline I read about it read like Poland was doing it to hedge their bets in 2024, which to be fair very likely could be as big of a factor, or at least more factors were mentioned in the body of the story that I didn't read, so I'm glad to get this information and see that perhaps we actually got a tangible benefit from it.
Though thinking on it further... So if the procedural votes were already scheduled by John (I'm presuming those facts based on what was said), it seems like he made that decision independently of Trump's switch.
So unless I'm missing something, what benefit is gained in terms of passing the bill?

As a guy who grew up during the Cold War, it is staggering to me that ANY American elected to Congress could be viewed by Russia as someone whose position they view as beneficial to their war effort. As a Republican myself, it's even more amazing that these individuals in Congress, that the Kremlin is gratified by, are Republicans! I'm old enough to remember when the Republicans were viewed as the hawks on national security and the Soviet Union/Russia. I thank my father in heaven that half the Republicans in Congress voted for this economic/military assistance package to Ukraine (and Israel and Taiwan). It is a tremendous relief that the USA still stands with our allies in Europe against the unmitigated evil that still resides in the Kremlin. Ukraine is clearly the most significant winner. America is a winner. So is Europe, so is the EU, and NATO and our entire Western culture is a winner. Perhaps not as obvious, however, is the fact that the Republican party is a winner. 🇺🇸 🇺🇦 🇮🇱 🇹🇼 🇺🇳 🇪🇺
