  • Over the Labor Day weekend, we were on the Vancouver, BC waterfront where Harbour Air resides. Among all the trip packages, the most appealing was the 2 hour mail run with multiple stops along the Gulf Islands of British Columbia.
During this experience we're able to ride upfront with the pilot on a DHC-2 Beaver floatplane over some of the most beautiful parts of Canada. This video is a long one, but it shows off some of the best scenery this country has to offer. Hope you will enjoy our travels.
Filmed: September 2015 in Beautiful British Columbia, Canada.

If I had a bucket list, among the items would for sure be "take a flight in a radial piston engined airplane". You just can´t beat that sound... :)

A wonderful place to fly to and from. The staff are ultra cheerful and friendly. A characteristic I have found to be the norm among Canadians.

What an engine. The money spent to travel in one of these daily fliers will be worth every penny. They just don't make them like this any more. What a gem.

    Beautiful video!
Coal Harbour (Vancouver), across Georgia Strait, over Saltspring Island, Crofton (my home) with the pulp mill🙄, Maple Bay, over to Ganges on Saltspring Isl. From Ganges, turning left with Provost Island and it’s long narrow bays to the right, passing Montague Harbour packed with boats, across Galiano Island and back to Vancouver!💕
We took the flight from Maple Bay to Vancouver return spending our 40th anniversary this past summer.
    Same beautiful Beaver...same Pilot!

I grew up in these planes on N. Ontario,, now live in Victoria, get to ride in Olivia now and again, a glass cockpit Beaver, ultra modern state of the art conversion. Still the same thrill and fun ! So grateful for my childhood, started as a dock boy swamper at the age of 11 serving the tourist camps. The best place in the world to live, right here on the west coast ! I take Kenmore to Seattle now and again, another great ride !

I did a similar trip, but across to Victoria. It was one of the most exciting flying trip I have ever done. I was lucky to sit up front with the pilot of the Beaver, which was the same age as I am.
If anyone is up that way I can really recommend it.
    Thanks for a great video!

Why do I always think the turboprop conversion on the Otter just looks wrong?

    • @markpimlott2879
      @markpimlott2879 9 місяців тому +1

The DHC-2 Turbo Beaver has a similar long-nosed look, compared to the original Wasp Jr. radial engined variants!
Some Turbo Beavers (about 120) were factory built by De Havilland Canada. All DHC-3 single Otters are conversions!
As the commenter above notes indirectly, two DHC-3 Turbo Otters are shown at the dock during the opening minute or so. More notably a DHC-3 Turbo Otter conversion is shown taxiing at about the two minute point and again about 30 to 45 seconds later taking off (as I recall).
First conceived in development as the Super Beaver' its most notable identification feature is its longer fuselage with several extra rectangular windows on each side!

thanks ever so much for a fantastic views and looks at the instrumentations of the cockpit. I dearly wish to have a flight in one of these sea planes, especially after having a lovely ride in one sooooo long ago....(when I was wikkle)... I am wondering tho, the thing that's used to direct the plane left & right & lift it up and down... please what is its proper name ??? I would really like to know. Thanks ever so again..😊😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✈✈✈✈✈✈⚓⚓

The rudder is fixed on hinges to the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer (the upright part of the tail or enpenage). It's the primary flight control causing the yaw or turning action. It's controlled by right and leftside foot pedals.
The elevators on the trailing edge of the horizontal stabilizer on the tail are the primary control surfaces that act on the climbing and descending actions and aircraft attitude.
The ailerons on the trailing edge of the wing control the rolling (pivoting of the fuselage) rolling or banking the aircraft to the left or right. This of course also has a major influence on the direction of flight and also indirectly on the attitude and altitude of the aircraft.
There are much better and more elaborate explanations about flight control elements and integrated systems on UA-cam and within Wikipedia!
Watch your attitude! (Via the Artificial Horizon instrument which is also termed an Attitude Indicator!)
I'm not a pilot but as a Wildlife Biologist I have spent some hundreds of hours in light fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. I first flew in commercial aircraft 70 years ago as well!

These motor’s RPM is worked about 2500 (loafing) with a max of 4500. They must last for a long time. Tried & true. I’d go for one of these.

The realistic red line is more likely to be about 3500 and idle about 750-800

Walter Palmer worked on really big radials In The usaf. Back and forth from calif. to Hickam field on the big island ten times a week. 200mph for ten hours with tons of cargo and men. 4 engines putting out 3000 hp each and guzzling 60 gal per engine each hour. Smooth and reliable and expensive to operate. Only Uncle Sam could afford to care and feed them. Thousands of these 4360 cu. in engines lay in the desert encased in steel casks. All are like new and there are no buyers.a shame

Try a _"typical run"_ run from Beautiful British Columbia northbound to the Yukon then wa-aaaay across the Northwest Territories and all the way to Nunavut then across Hudson's Bay and to northern Quebec then all the way to Labrador then south to Newfoundland and all the way west back to Beautiful British Columbia for a REAL over 7,200 mile run in Canada!!! Now *THAT'S* what a _"typical run"_ is! Not some alaskan seal-eyeball tossing sandbox paper plane run!!!
