Designing a GARDEN With STONE - Ep. 038
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 сер 2024
- After walking our land with geologist, Alexandra Moore, we got inspired by her story of how the glaciers eroded the bedrock and brought in "glacial erratics". We thought for this very special garden, (which will be planted up in a future episode), we'd take some of those native stones and erratics and create a mini diorama of that movement within the bed.
Designing with stones can really make a bed more visually interesting and give you something to plant around. Though this bed is a work-in-progress, we hope you enjoy our thinking behind the stone placement!

Love the rock in the garden. Please don't forget to put a rock in the middle of the water basin, just in case a bee or other creature wants a drink. That way it can still get out.
Yes..I was thinking the same thing. A rock in the center is important. Birds or another creature will have something to grab onto. Maybe the water in the birdbath could be a little shallower. I really like that it's make of rock. Love the garden!
I love rocks, I collect them when I go to different states and use them in my gardens. I don’t have many from other areas but I have a farm field next to my house so when he plows and brings rocks up I go looking for interesting rocks to continue in my flower gardens.I guess I should have used past tense, years ago farmers were giving rocks away, thankful for people picking them, now the farmers are charging for field rock😞💚🙃
That switch grass will eventually push the big rock some with it’s roots. In a few years. Yes. Love the rocks and fossils.
I really love seeing your design process and hearing the thoughts behind them! The bird bath is super nice, but you might wanna put a thick branch or a 'rock ladder' into the water so that insects and small animals don't drown.
My garden is always a working progress & discovered I had big natural rocks buried in the landscape. Now I’m also methodically using them in my garden for natural appeal.
I loved this one because I love rocks as much as plants. Whenever I do a small garden for folks I always leave either one or three interesting rocks in it somewhere. You are so lucky to have such a nice variety on your property. And fossils?!?!!! Geez....I’m so envious! 🌿🌱🌻
You and Saunder have a great sense of aesthetics. Creating amazing spaces with stone and plant material.
Hi Summer: I love to add rock to my landscape. It adds to the natural setting of nature. It makes the center piece of the design-the focal point for that particular area of the garden. In the video you are talking about taller plants being in the background and then to watch the mature height and spread of your plantings as you plant towards the perimeter of the garden so you don’t cover up other plantings and your rock in the garden. Just to clarify to your viewers: what you have here is an island that one can walk around, view, and enjoy all the designs of plantings, rock and other items you’ll introduce into this work of art. What I’m getting at is the tallest plants would be placed at the highest point of the island or the center of the island running from one end to the other So, viewing from one side of the island one can’t see what’s on the other side because you can’t see over the tallest plants in the center of the island; so, when one walks to the other side it’s all new and different. The only common subject would be the tall plantings in the center and perhaps a border of liriope around the perimeter of the island.
Love the coppery copper colors! Yup, I collect rocks when I find an interesting one. I also collect little round stones for art projects for kids (art on the rocks). Flat stone slab probably slate? Our local bedrock is Columbia River Basalt which is very dark gray and columnar. Now I'm going to go watch the video on rocks. Thanks for those!
Being I used to live in the PNW, I constantly used rocks, boulders, flagstone etc, honestly I don’t see it enough in the northeast, and we have so much of it. Love it!
Ah you guys are lucky to have all those old rocks, the garden is coming along can’t wait to see the finished product, thanks for sharing!!!
yay Sunder G-d bless that unsung hero
Brilliant method to relocate that boulder. I always like to seeing stone used in garden bed. It helps to break up the continuous foliage and adds dimension to the space.
Lovely- can’t wait to hear the story.
Love stones too Very much. I use them in my dish garden creation
Thanks for sharing 😊
Hey Flock, Canada calling and we want that big rock back LOL LOL.
I've collected rocks from farms and put them in my garden. The only problem I found is that over time they will sink in the soil and the medium to small size ones can actually disappear. I put sand and a bit of gravel under them to try to stabilize them more.
lol so thats hoofing... I love it! gosh i found the stuff on rocks very interesting.. and i love rock gardens...theyre so interesting and beautiful and you they make beautiful eye candy and you cant muck it up....omigod that tree is beautiful I love the way youve pruned it.. beautiful color
Love your approach and it looks great! The last view years I've been collecting alot from nature, feathers, grasses, flowers, leaves, fruits and stones! So this is a dream, to display what I find and be creative with it on my own property😍 Love watching you fulfill your dreams
Rocks, love 'em. If you have the mind for them, you honor all life which came before us.
I remember your crevice project, definitely gave me ideas for my succulents!!!
Love from Ormoc City, Leyte, Philippines
I can see it's going to look really nice! 👍🏽
This inspire me to do a mini rock garden in my yard❤
your working that poor man to the bone!! Summer, i hope he gets free room and bored......lol...im counting down to the rose video!!!!!
Beautiful! Thank you for the tips.
insects will profit from the water stone if you add a branch or similar to it that will help them get out of the water again in case they fell into it. otherwise they might just drown since the sides of the bowl are too steep to climb out.
You can also add a series stones on their edges and plant in between. Your flat slate like stones would be great for that. Really coming to life now!
What I would really love, just a suggestion 😌 is a spring, summer and fall (and winter possible?) tour every year 😅 is that a bit much to ask? How I imagine it: a big part of the property, partly drone , maybe follow the same route every season, so you can visually follow your progress on the whole place. And how things look. And maybe just images and music? No talking or people, just enjoying the scenery. 🤭😁 not trying to be unkind, but I would love that kind of update. Visually and relaxing. Love what you guys are doing!
You could also use Thyme and creeping phlox in your garden. Another low growing plant is a creeping juniper or hen and chics and Ajuga are also great low growing ground covers plants.
Summer please try stone cairn also. It looks good.
You can add stones into the bird bath, lets small birds bathe and small mammals drink without fear of drowning
I’m also from the finger lakes. We do have lots of rocks. Lake Ontario has rocks as big as cars.
Happy growing...👍👍😊
I have a perfect natural slope in front of my house that would look awesome with stones, the problem is that I don’t have stones, and bringing them in is an expensive hassle.
One option could be one large fake stone (about $150) and then smaller ones that are real around that are easier and less expensive
@@2prettyfunnythings736 That is true and I could probably make it myself with cement and chicken wire. I'll think about it, although don't give me ideas, otherwise I'll end up recreating a roman ruin pastiche...
@@suburbanhomestead now you have me thinking about hypertufa and making a faux rock with that….😊🧐
@@2prettyfunnythings736 fake rocks are expensive too.
@@suburbanhomestead aha, that too.
Very cool! I LOVE this channel.
Hey @kubota get these guys a new tractor.
I recommend the videos from mudfossil university. These are no stones, these are giants. It Takes a few videos to really understand, what we are looking at.
Put together a fulcrum to move rocks....bricks & long strong 6x6 will lift it onto a furniture cart or just keep rolling it along. Read up on how fulcrums work.
Hi... I see a lot of wormwood amongst the sedums. I love wormwood as a companion plant and to use it aesthetically, but won't it all overgrow and hide the sedums?
Wish I have your garden design eyes.
Will all the plants, like the sedums, lavender and so on have the same water requirements?
I love to add rock to the garden,, but in my experience snail usually hide under the rocks,,,,
These smaller rocks in few years will be covered by these plants
Who needs huge equipment when u have a golf cart and a wooden raft with roapes to move rocks.
Woah I'm early

So many viewers but so little likes... Come on Likelikelikelike
what do you mean "don't get a hernia" ? Pretty sure you want me to make a new stonehenge
I love your channel, also Plant One On Me, great stuff. Seriously one of my favourite channels. That said, the camera work makes me feel sick. Any panning, swooping, or just a lot of the movement really makes me feel nauseous. It really detracts from the videos. Your content is worthy of more professional camera work. I don’t use social media so maybe you guys are more of an Instagram entity and UA-cam is like a side thing? Sorry, maybe it’s just me.
I have to say. I experience this as well. I so love both channels, but with this particular entry i had to stop watching because I felt dizzy.
Me as well, it's not just her, lots of other bloggers. They aren't aware of how it affects viewers, I suspect.🙂
