Okay so it seems I didn't make this super clear in the video. But when I mention the 51% tax, that only affects international chains, not local businesses.
Don't worry, McMerc didn't have to pay 51%!

@@yoshtg No it's not lol. It's a combination of other reasons:
      - avoiding french domination on the economy
      - Algeria was also playing with the USSR/USA rivalry during the cold war, and it was done to avoid giving too much room to the americans
      - the algerian gov is overall very corrupt and greedy
Algeria, like many other countries in the Maghreb and the Levant, wasn't very religious until quite recently. It's not Saudi Arabia. They even used to drink alcohol (light beers mostly) casually. And anyway, MacDonald has no trouble adapting to local habits (and not just religious taboos).

@@yoshtg China impose similar tax to foreign companies, afaik. Chinese government is as atheist as you can get. You'll like it there.
They do this to protect local economy. I think it's good that Algeria does this, otherwise local businesses couldn't thrive.
McDonald's could easily adhere to local customs and religion. Take India's McDonalds menu, they don't serve beef.

Algeria will participate with 51% of the money invested, not taking 51% of profits.
McDonald's wanted to own the freehold of the land for planting the potatoes, but Algeria don't sell the land except lease, which McDonald's wasn't happy with. To be honest I agree with the Algerian government because what McDonald's was going to add to the economy? nothing.

Hey. Just a little correction about WHY there's no McDonald's here. It's not that they're not ALLOWED per say, because they technically are (we have pizza hut and KFC and a bunch of french fast food chains) it's just that they are only allowed if they comply with the 51/49 rule, which isnt that the government needs 51% of the profits, it just means that the company needs to be 51% owned by an Algerian citizen in order to operate in the country.

As an Algerian I love your content on our country. I was both surprised and glad to see that there was more of it after your fruit series was over.
But there is a correction I want to make, as of now there's no McDonald's in Algeria (your initial assumption was correct). The "McDonald's Algeria" Instagram account you found is totally fake and lacks the verification symbol found in other official McDonald's country accounts. And the two "McDonald's" locations found in Google Maps are both fake and propped up by bot accounts, with one of them being located in a rural town in Kabylia, which makes no sense for that to be a priority location, there's also a bunch of reviews on both addresses saying that they're fake.
It seems like you too got fooled by Algerian McBootlegs.

I frequently visit Algeria because I am deeply enchanted by this vast and captivating country, the largest in Africa by land area. Its immense size means that one trip is not enough to fully uncover all its wonders. The landscapes are truly spectacular, ranging from sun-drenched Mediterranean beaches to towering mountains and expansive deserts.
Algeria is also rich in history, with remarkable sites such as ancient Roman ruins, the fascinating rock art of Tassili, the historic Santa Cruz fort in Oran, and the ancient arena in the city center. The M'Zab Valley in Ghardaia, the stunning Kabylie region, and the impressive suspended bridges of Constantine are just a few examples of the country’s rich heritage.
In terms of gastronomy, Algeria offers an exceptional culinary diversity. Traditional dishes like couscous, which comes in a multitude of regional variations, tchoutchouka, a savory blend of grilled vegetables, and tajines, rich with meat, vegetables, and spices, are true delights. Each dish is made with fresh, local ingredients, revealing authentic flavors and unique culinary expertise. You’ll experience a cuisine where every bite tells a story, reflecting the country’s rich cultural heritage.
I highly recommend watching Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s video, which beautifully showcases Algeria’s breathtaking landscapes and cultural richness. This country is truly a hidden gem that deserves thorough exploration.

Frozen and processed food doesn't exist in Algeria. It would be nice to try some actual Algerian fast food that you can't find anywhere else: algerian pizza (pizza carré, pizza couverte), coca, mhadjebs, Algerian grill, soufflés, Algerian sandwiches, garantita, Algerian ice cream (créponé) etc.

as a matter of fact, the old Algerian investment code required foreign investors to find a local partner who should own 51% of the business, this code has been reversed last year for all sectors except energy, mining and pharma. Foreign investors got some incentives too, as in 3 to 10 years of tax excemption.KFC took advantage of the new investment code and they are now present in Algeria.

Lest we laugh at countries like Algeria for doing this kind of thing, America did it too in the early days of burgers. New Jersey is still dotted with places called White [Something] that make onion-steamed sliders, riding on the coattails of White Castle. And every big city is going to have bootleg versions of any restaurant that has gained any kind of trendiness or popularity. Like, after the Seinfeld soup nazi episode, there were soup shops popping up all over New York with names like Soup Nutsy.
The truth is, most human beings are not particularly original or creative, or are otherwise boxed in by social expectations even if they do have their own ideas. People just want to have what their friends and neighbors have, and can't imagine anything better or different, and there will be merchants who step in to fill that demand, merchants who themselves are risk-averse and unoriginal. It's how traditional crafts happened even before the rise of civilization, and it's how styles and fashions continue even to this day. Human nature.

I'm sure you'll reply eventually, however I decided to reply to myself first to give you some facts! the reasons why McDonald's isn't present here in Algeria is not because of the 51% law, although this law does really exist! The real reason is that the government wanted to supply this giant fast food chain with a local potato variety, but McDonald's refused because this white looking potatoes aren't good for French fries.. ( the reason why you won't find crispy McDonald's like French fries here ) instead McDonald's negotiated to bring the Russet potato variety, rent farming land and grow it here, then the government refused! That's the story in a nutshell and regarding the " Mc " phenomenon in Algeria's fast food branding it is a just a reference that the restaurant is indeed a " fast food restaurant " as you mentioned.
Fun fact I don't live far from that Mc Pif thing haha.
