  • As most of you know, the 1920s was the peak of the player piano's popularity. Here we have a great rendition of "Ain't She Sweet" issued as Imperial 06441. Although this roll does not indicate the player pianist/arranger, I am almost certain, judging by the all too familiar hooks and stride in this arrangement, that this could only be none other than J. Lawrence Cook. Mr. Cook arranged most, if not all of the Imperial roll releases anonymously after QRS absorbed Imperial in the late 1920s. He also arranged rolls for the United States Roll Co.--after QRS absorbed that company at the same time as Imperial--under the pseudo name of Fred Parsons. This Imperial arrangement of "Ain't She Sweet" was also issued on the US label as US 44314 and reissued on QRS' "Q series" as QRS Q-111 but slightly re-edited, under the Fred Parsons pseudo name.

My parents had a player piano when I was very young. My father eventually gave it to his sister and got us a new one. Wish he'd hung on to it. "Ain't She Sweet" is such a great song. It's amazing how many videos of it are on You Tube. It's 89 years old, and people still love to hear and/or play it. Definite proof that a good song never dies! Thanks for posting this. :)

A very difficult feat to perform: Holding a video camera as steady as you can while pumping the player pedals at the same time! I invested in a tripod soon afterwards.

I used to have a player piano and we had this roll, it was one of my favorites! Unfortunately our player piano fell into disrepair and my grandfather gave it away to someone, I don't know who =( I would love to get another one.

Fantastic video! I keep playing this over and over again... but the thing is I'm looking for a transcription of it to play in a festival I run in Germany - we have a concert of music written in 1927 - mainly "classical" - Ravel and Martinu - but very jazz-influenced - and I'm dying to put this in. Any ideas?

This song is supposed to be a jazz song. But your player piano turned it into a ragtime song. I love it. 👍 Ragtime piano is my favorite genre.

I thought James P Johnson actually recorded his own rolls? If not, which ones were actually JLC?
