A technique I've found work to differentiate materials with high specularity and low reflectivity like non-polished metals, plastic and marble. It depends on where you locate the lights and shadows. While things like plastic and marble go "light>mid>shadow", metals tend to have dark values and light values pretty close to one another. In real life this is due to things like ambient occlusion or shapes casting shadows over them. But in painting when you don't know what's in front of the metal, painting shadow-ish shapes near the spots where the light hits helps create that contrast that creates the illusion of metal. You don't want these shapes to be as dark as the shadow value but definitely darker than the base color of the metal.

While designing structures or hard surface objects I think of actions like "extrude" "inset" and "bevel"; taking that modeling knowledge and applying it to my 2D drawings. Also, Blender is very helpful for studying perspective.
