I can't thank you enough for this excellent tear down and rebuild! I needed to replace the tripod mount (which I damaged by leaving it connected to a monopod and letting it rattle around in my car for a week and stripped the threads.) and after finding one on eBay I was able to replace it and put it back together and have everything work. Tearing down was easy. Then I panicked a little when I realized I couldn't remember how everything went back together. But after a good nights sleep and continuing the video to the end, all is well. The detail instructions were perfect, including the SD door resistance piece and the little copper bumper that of course fell off and I had no idea where it went. And of course the screen switch. Thanks again. -JJ
Thanks for a clear and thorough video! I’m taking mine apart because it got dropped on the pavement and now there’s a rattle that happens with the slightest movement. Hopefully I won’t have to go too far into it to find the culprit.
I 've taken min apart and like you I had a couple of screws leftover on re assembly so watching your video helped a lot thanks for sharing ..............................Cheers
To the audience of this video from HBT: Has anyone fixed the issue of rattling with the camera unable to turn off by simply taking off some of the components and putting them back on, or shall I be the first to try it? To HBT, thank you. Your video is clear and on point.
When I turn my camera on (open the LCD) everything seems to work fine for about 10 seconds, then the screen locks up. Sometimes with a clear image, sometimes with a multi-color pixilated screen. No idea why other than I noticed a small crack where the tripod attaches extending around the side opposite the LCD side. Plus, I can hear something faintly rattling inside the camera body which I don't remember hearing before. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for the helpful video, mine didnt have any problems, I just wanted to take the IR filter out to be able to use it with IR light at night as a " night vision device " I just reassembled it and everything seems good except for the focus, which is not kicking in, ill probably open it again later and check if i forgot to reattach any cables
Hey, Man! Thaaaaank Yooouuuu for this video! Helped me a ton with my cam. I was recording some kitesurfing videos and wind blew mine into the sand and it got some grains into the lens system and, actually, all over, so, needed to cleanup. Back to normal now, thanks to you!!! :):):)
Great tutorial! Failure mode on mine was the user. We had a micro SD card in a standard SD Card adapter and I accidentally bumped the card cover open and the micro SD card fell out of the adapter, I pushed it back in thinking I was pushing it into the SD card adapter only to get the message to check the SD Card. Upon closer inspection, I missed the adapter and pushed it in along side the SD card slot. In trying to retrieve it, we accidentally pushed it further in and it is now loose inside the camera. I was hoping to retrieve it but am not willing to risk damaging the camera. Everything still works so now we have a time capsule. When it finally does die...should only be a couple of years the way things are made these days....I'll have to remember to remove the loose card.
I like your video. thanks for posting . I would like to ask you a question. I have a canon vixia HFs21 for seven years. Now I noticed that the lcd has a purple lines. I dont know what is going on with my camcorder. I heard that ccd is damaged, but I dont know how to fix myself or where can in send it for someone to fix it. If you can help me or give me some advice I will appreciate your help. Thanks
R500 drop and dead. Replacement R700 as-is cheap working but missing the display door ribbon guard and would not turn on with door open. Took R500 apart and popped out the cover with the three detent releases. Popped R500 door ribbon cover onto R700. Bingo door switch magically now works.
I have the hfr300. Also looks the same. I wanted to see the sensor though.. I've thought of doing a sensor mod by removing the IR cut filter for night vision. Or maybe a possibly sensor transplant? To a dslr sensor? I wonder if its possible.
I need to replace the tripod mount on my HF-R300 (from what Canon tells me, just about all the HF series camcorder tripod mounts are universal), but you stopped just shy of tearing into that part. Any chance you can continue to that point where the mount can be disassembled and pulled from the base mount? Thanks, if you can :)
That's likely the lens stabilization you're hearing and is normal. A part of the optical path stabilization is mechanically floating. Does the sound happen when it off but not when its on?
That is exactly why I'm here (Vixia HF R700). That little rattle when you turn the camera over or shake it. I just got the camera today and I'm waiting for the seller to return my email about that. ... It's good to know that is "natural"- I guess.
Great video. However, I have a Canon Legria HF M46 videocamera who have been in water and doesn't work. Do you now if the built in flash memory (16 GB) can be disassembled and readable from a computer? Regards/Staffan
The autoexposure on my Canon Vixia HF R400 isn't working. Even if I adjust the exposure manually, it takes a long time for it to get the right exposure. Is this something I could fix by taking it apart?
my problem: lcd turns on only if rotated/opened in certain position, then it stays on in all position exept for screen mirror that doesn't work. Solutions?
If you ever find out I'd love to know!! Thanks. Just found a guy who tightened on an SLR style Canon. It took him ten minutes of disassembly to tighten one screw. I'll just live with it.
Where do you find the parts to fix it. Nothing is on eBay and Ali express use to have parts but can't find it now. Cannon hf100 been a excellent job but one day it quits. Cannon service Tech said it was a main power board. Cannot find one online anymore like a year ago. Making it difficult. I know I can fix it if I can find the parts. Can't even find a repair manual for it. Hoping someone can help.
Hi HBT, Thank you for this great video, I'd like to know if your cam is still able to power on ? in fact I unmount 2 times : 1st time I stop before removing the Screen wire. and then the cam was still working. The second time I unmount everything then I'm unable to power on again. Symptoms : when I push on the ON/OFF button nothing happen. the only thing I can see is : I plug the bat, then the power line, then the RED led in on (means POWER/ CHG). then if I push the on/off button, the Red led goes off and the camera do nothing. This can be again and again. do you have any advice in order to make it working again ? Thank you for your help.
Mine won't turn on either. It will charge and the ref blinking light will blink. Unplugged from the charger there is no power to turn on. Also have a rattling inside the inner black compartment.
Bought a hd 24mp 16x zoom off of Geek to save money. Trying to get into it to take out the IR filter. Can't figure out how to take the front lense ring off. Wish me luck.
hey buddy.. thank you. I messed mine today. I was out in the sun playing with our kids and I don't know why I decided to point the camcorder at the sun and zoomed all the way. now it does not focus anymore. no auto focus and no manual. I know I might have messed up a sensor in there but I just hope i'm wrong. any ideas?
hello bought the canon vixia hf r600 the camera is amazing but for some reason my recording button came off and one of the small pegs broke so it wont stay there any help on solving this problam ?
Oh wow, it looks like you pretty much have to take the camera all the way apart like that to replace the flip screen. I have one that's nearly brand new, but the screen went weird. And I have an old one with a good flip screen but the microphone is going bad. I was thinking about switching them, but that looks like a delicate job. 50/50 chance to get it back together right 😂
plz help me. I opened mine, took out the IR filter lens, put it back, everything works except the image is blurry. It will not auto focus zoomed out, I have to zoom in to an object very up close in order to have it focused and see an image.
My camera is saying that the sd card door is open when its not so i cant film, i cant tell what tells the camera when the door is open or closed, could you give me any advice?
I have the same problem with a canon legria hfg25, and tried opening it and all but there is just a metal plaque, nothing attached to these play buttons or something to trigger the door to tell it's closed. I have no clue what to do, and I thinks it's a shame that companies do this, like not allowing to record on a high and expensive piece of tech just because of an error that depends of a small piece of plastic. Let me use it with the door open, that's my problem. Did you find a solution?
I have a vixia HF20 the internal battery is dead, every time I change batteries everything resets to 2009. Is there an easy way to open and change the battery, it is a little different than your model.
My brain kept saying: "Dude, no sense in you looking at this video; you're NEVER going to do this- Even if I could remember this (which I can't), those meat hooks (you call 'hands') will never hold this intricate crap! Trust me!"
I tried to open my camera because it dropped and the pictures are not clear. I am hearing a shaking inside. I thought I could open the camera to find anything but it is difficult to get behind the lens where I suspect the shaking is coming from.
I used the camera about a year ago and it was fine. I recently used the camera and now I have a thin blue line going from top to bottom on the left side of the screen in recording and playback mode. Thought it might be as simple as a lose ribbon cable and wanted to know how to take apart the camera. Unfortunately the problem wasn't the ribbon cable, so I'm just living with the blue line in all my recordings. Anybody have any suggestions what might be wrong?
Well, you unmount all the parts of the camera except which that I need, (sorry for my English) I'm from Uruguay and never speak. Occurs some inexplicable, when I push the sd memory to extract it, it´s released correctly, but when I try to put again in place, it´s seems like obstructed, I tried to see inside, but its very difficult, seems to be a screw oblicuous at the bottom, i don't understand, please, anything can help me. thanks
I am scared to open mine. I got a crazy good deal on the camera from best buy but it came with just the camera, no cables or battery etc. so I wasn't 100% if it worked. I ordered a battery and charger on amazon super cheap and they arrive tomorrow. Hopefully the camera works as I can hear something jiggle a little inside when I shake it. Hoping its nothing major and I won't have to take it apart.
HBT actually I discovered the sound stops when I turn the camera ON. must be the motor that drives the lens. when its on the motor is engaged and doesn't make a sound. when it's off, it jiggles just a tad. so all is well. Scored this camera for $150 at bestbuy. LOVE it.
Yup, actually i have a legria (EU version) that comes with no mic-in jack so i supossed that the pcb was the same. So there was some posibility of soldering a jack in place... And it is, but i dont have any jack that fits in, its a non standart component, what a pity :(. Thanks for you video very usesful.
What a useful video! But I need to be seen how to clean the dust inside len of Canon Vixia HF r80. Could you give me the video instruction to clean it? I indeed appreciate your help. Thanh you!
I was thinking about opening mine to try quieting the noise I sometimes hear while making a video and the noise gets recorded. Its a dull clicking sound. Taking a wild guess I think it might be a cooling fan. Thanks for the video Great camera work.
Um, you neglected to test the camera after reassembling it, so we have no idea if the camera is still functional or has become a doorstop. I don't like the idea of inexperienced people fiddling around with those fragile ribbon cables and expecting the camera to work again. Even you lost parts and were having difficulty in places. Here's what I do: take a sheet of paper and make a diagram of which screw goes where. The DC connector on my R800 no longer mates snugly.

Tom & Jerry's Vlogs use a powered mic .
