    The barrel stiffness is more a function of geometry than total material mass. They maintain a larger diameter for the same mass, so there’s a definite stiffness boost.

    Still like the savage 110 ultralight. Great for back country hunting. Knock is on the stock, how do you beat the barrel, trigger, adjustable stock options, weight, accuracy, and chamber options for the price point. Cerakote the stock if you don't like the looks.

    I actually tagged you in the Bergera post about the Crest model and how much you would love it, especially when they eventually chamber it in 7 PRC a day or two ago.
    Some folks actually like a heavier weight model especially when it comes to magnum cartridges so they have the power but a more stable platform for those shots past 300 - 400 yards that can present themselves in the backcountry. Then cut weight elsewhere. To each their own on their preferred style.
    A Savage 110 Ultralight is a carbon fiber barreled rifle in the same price point as the Ridge Carbon but with a more plastic feeling stock. But weighs a pound less than the Ridge.
    I can’t wait to see what you share with us from Shot Show. I wish that I could be there instead of working at a boring retail store like Menards

    I own and love several Bergara rifles. All of them are shooters and I've never had any issues with the rifles themselves. My only complaint has been the weight. Packing a Bergara up and down the mountains with a suppressor has been less than ideal. I'm glad they've been listening to their customers about shaving weight!!!

    The fluting is a way to add some stiffness of a heavier barrel without all the weight of a heavier barrel. Fluting really doesn’t do much for cooling down a barrel (it adds a little surface area which helps but not significantly). It’s the same principle behind why civil engineers use I-beams instead of a fully filled rectangular beam.

    The Springfield Waypoint 2020 is in the Crest price range if you get the steel barrel. I recently bought one partially because of the review on the channel. I saw a brief flash that ONE Bergara is left-handed (LH) but you didn't mention it. MY REQUEST is that you do a video on ALL the available LH rifles, especially bolt guns (since all lever guns can be shot either way). With 15+% of all shooters being LH and some of us RH shooters are left-eye dominant, the paucity of LH guns is disheartening, even if it takes more engineering and would have a slightly higher retail cost.

    if you are familiar with metal you would come to learn that a flat sheet of metal or a round tube becomes much stronger and stiffer if you add feature lines to the metal, you take a door shell of a car and add feature lines in the metal it makes the panel stronger and stiffer, the same thing with a round tube, if you flute a gun barrel you actually add much more tensile strength to the tube itself as opposed to just a round tube, and you also increase the amount of square inches of outer area available for air cooling ,, that is shy companies flute barrels

    Depending on the fluting pattern I think it actually add to the rigidity. You’ve got increased surface area, with radii that conflict with the radius of the barrel, there are a number of factors, but I remember reading somewhere that one of the benefits of fluting is increased rigidity. I’m no physicist though, so idk for sure.

      @albertlemont5471 Рік тому +1

      Yeah, the further from the bore axis the material is, the more the material resists bending. It's why we use I-beams to build large buildings and tube framing to build race car cages/chassis. I-beams and tubes are much stronger for the same cross-sectional surface area than just a solid bar of steel.

    • @anthonykaiser974
      @anthonykaiser974 Рік тому

      Removing material doesn't increase rigidity. What you do have is increased rigidity over the same weight unfluted barrel.

    • @danielbell4007
      @danielbell4007 Рік тому +1

      @@anthonykaiser974 it’s not just removing material, (depending on the pattern) it’s adding a series convex radii to the barrel which is structurally stronger than a solid cylinder. I’m no engineer, but I know a few and I’m discussing architecture and other non-firearm related topics, radii are added to or built into materials to make them stronger. I don’t know all the answers, but it is interesting to consider. I’ll have to do some more dogging.

Just an awesome, ridiculously accurate rifle, and you can buy one for under $1300 if you know where to look (I did). I will always support an American firearms manufacturer over the imports, plain and simple. I'd like this channel a lot more if you did too. Going to a thicker contour barrel and then fluting it can give you a barrel of the same weight but increase it's rigidity and cooling properties. If you are not looking to increase weight but wanted to stiffen the barrel and increase cooling, this is how you do it.

    There is a weird phenomenon going on with bergaras. The vast majority of people using them sounds very satisfied, often reporting custom rifle like accuracy. But on several forums sometimes a few "influent" guys pop up and literally start throwing s..t to bergara, with a lot of hanger and committment, getting even to say that these rifles are so bad that they would never own or work on one or even use parts for builds. To me it seems that these guys are actively trying to bash Bergara, maybe on the payroll of someone who could benefit from this. Emotional involvement in defending something we like is understandable, emotional involvement and committment in bashing a brand is more difficult to undestand if there is not some interest on the table. Great video. I wonder, though, why is everybody so excited about their carbon fiber when Savage and others have already been doing it?

    Rifles such as these are mostly going to be fired at the range from a bench or prone. Weight has its advantage for this type of shooting, it helps to keep your scope on target so you can see your hits. These are not rifles that you hump up mountains to shoot goats. So why would anyone pay hundreds of dollars more for a rifle that is anywhere from .5 to 1.5 pounds lighter when it is not going to benefit you in the type of shooting you are going to do?

    Fluting adds rigidity as well as surface area for cooling while minimizing weight.

    • @backfire
      @backfire  Рік тому +3

      Respectfully, I don't think fluting adds rigidity. How could it? It's removing material. If it were the same barrel contour but without those grooves cut out, it'd be even more rigid.

    • @garyhawkins8094
      @garyhawkins8094 Рік тому +2

      @@backfire The "ribs" add rigidity. We used to put these on our field rifles since we would carry them for days on end. Our urban/hostage guns we left them round. So technically you are correct they are not more rigid than a bull at the same diameter of the outer circumference, but they are functionally as stiff as the full barrel but with less weight and better cooling secondary to surface area.

    • @redrock425
      @redrock425 Рік тому +2

      @@backfire It's one of those relative discussions. Is it a thinner barrel with added ribs or a thicker barrel with less mass? I'd say it's a compromise between a thin or thick barrel. To be honest for hunting you're not shooting a high number of rounds (assuming deer not prairie dogs), I'd go for the lighter option. Disclaimer I'm not a hunter 😉

    Pretty sure fluting still helps the barrel stay more rigid compared to thinner profile barrel and at least providing more surface for cooling...

      @backfire  Рік тому +2

      So fluting removes material from a barrel. If we're talking about a barrel that still has that steel in it, vs one of the same contour with that material removed for fluting, it couldn't be MORE rigid, right?

    Hold on a moment! I know of 2 rifles that are less expensive, with Carbon fiber.
    The Howa 1500 Carbon Stalker - $975 - comes with a carbon stock and a steel barrel, Short and Long Action models come in at 6.2lbs, the Mini Action models in 4lbs 10 oz. Can get them in a lot of cartridges from .223 up to .300 Win Mag.
    Howa 1500 Carbon Elevate - $1300 - 4lbs 13oz, has a carbon stock and barrel. Only comes in 6.5 Creed, .308, 6.5 PRC and 6.5 Grendel though.
