DIE MIDWESTERN (LYRICS)
There’s nothing left to say
and nothing to do
This house is lonely
Now I’m here without you
So I sit and I wait for the sun
The streets are crowded
And the lights are so bright
Another Cincinnati Saturday night
And I hate what that has become
And I’ve been thinking that I should go
Cause if I don’t leave now then I’m never gonna leave Ohio
Lord
And that’s a chance that I just can’t take
Now that I’m getting older
I thought that we would set the city on fire
But if we stick around we’ll surely expire
As our dreams slip right through our hands
Lately, I’ve been learning more about love
From a precious heart that cares about us
I think she belongs where I stand
And I’ve been thinking that I should go
Cause if I don’t leave now then I’m never gonna leave Ohio
Lord
And that’s a chance that I just can’t take
Now that I’m getting older
And I’ve been thinking that we should go
Cause if we don’t leave now then we’re never gonna leave Ohio
Lord
And that’s a chance that we just can’t take
Now we’re all getting older
An Ohio singer/songwriter with a soulful, rootsy blend of country, rock, and folk, Arlo McKinley debuted in 2014 with his self-titled album. In 2020, he came to wider public attention with Die Midwestern, released on the late John Prine's Oh Boy label. Two years later, he issued This Mess We're In.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, McKinley first began singing at age eight in the choir at his family's Baptist church. Growing up, he imbibed his Kentucky-born father's LPs, listening to artists like Hank Williams and George Jones, as well as Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, and Van Morrison. By his teens, he was playing guitar and singing in punk bands. However, in his twenties he began writing his own songs, gravitating toward rootsy country and soul sounds, mixing it with his varied rock influences. A troubled period involving drugs waylaid his career and found him moving away from music. For several years, he drove a truck delivering tuxedos between Cincinnati and Detroit. He eventually returned to songwriting and in 2014 released his debut album, Arlo McKinley & the Lonesome Sound. Hitting the road, he gained wider attention touring alongside roots luminaries like Tyler Childers, John Moreland, Jason Isbell, and Justin Townes Earle. In March 2020, he became the final artist signed by legendary singer/songwriter John Prine's Oh Boy Records label just before Prine's death that April. In August 2020, McKinley released his sophomore album and Oh Boy debut, Die Midwestern, recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Studio with Grammy-winning producer Matt Ross-Spang. 2022 saw the release of McKinley's third long-player, the inward-looking This Mess We're In.

Wow.... another winner!!! Love this song!!
Wow, is right! So glad that beloved John Prine helped support Arlo's tremendous talent 💞
Hell yeah
cant wait
Love this. Thanks to KNBT for turning me on to Arlo. Best Country song of 2020.
I'm not gonna lie, this song made me think and I moved out of Ohio back to Virginia
I left Ohio! Been gone 5 years. Miss home but not the dope and crazies.
Just visited cleveland. Seattle is worse in every way.
Best Coutry album of 2020! Yet mainstream country radio will never play it! Thanks to KNBT in New Braunfels Texas for turning me on to Arlo.
Me too! KNBT all day every day.
I'm not even gonna pretend i didnt play this on repeat on my way home from work today. Been home for 2 hours and its still on.
did the same today. i've never even been to ohio.
@@rossedwardmiller crazy, wild , beautiful place
Same!
Hahahaha yes
From Ohio, in Texas since 1981. I surely do miss the seasons and all my old friends
Born and raised on the Ohio river. I know Northern Kentucky well. Song carries the water and draws you to the river; all with soul and a whine that is almost a melancholy whisper. So much goodness in this journey.
When I was a kid, aaallllll I wanted to do was get out of Ohio. And I did for college, but here I am, back again. Ohio is a heck of a lot cheaper than New York, so I'm staying lol. Love this song.
My store on Main Street in Covington makes an appearance in the video.
Cool?
@@NirtieDigger yes, it is cool.
What I meant to say was, no one cares.
@@NirtieDigger you’re right, no one cares that you don’t own a store that makes an appearance in Arlo’s video.
Very cool indeed, and I care.
This kind of video will perpetuate the myth of cold & permanent gray skies in Ohio. It’s fucking 85, sunny, and green right now. Has been for months.
It literally rains in Ohio from November to April with small windows of sunshine and snow. I have lived here for 40 years. Your comment perpetuates the fact that comment sections can be a cesspool.
@Rockin Robin correct. That’s called winter & spring. In my area of Ohio, which I’ve lived in for 43 years, nearly half (so summer & fall) are sunny and pleasant. Actually we go some winters without snow. My comment was mostly a joke but you appear to be a negative Nancy so I’ve decide to provide data. 176 sunny days. This doesn’t include days where it’s mostly sunny. So take your cess pool comment and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine which I assume is Cleveland. “If you see anyone, throw anything onto the field. Point em’ out and get em’ outta here. You don’t live in Cleveland. You live in Cincinnati!”-Sam Wyche (a football coach that’s actually taken an Ohio team to the Suoer Bowl). Edit: you used perpetuate in conjunction with fact incorrectly.
For real. You get to experience all four seasons here, in all of their glory. I just wish it weren't so humid in the summer...
Sportin the Childers shirt too .. wicked tune man!
Man crazy track , southern Ohio stand up
I grew up in Saint Louisville, and moved to Fort Worth 7 years ago.
John Prine brought me here, so you Know it's good. :-)
Heard on NPR today that Arlo was the last artist John Prine signed to his record label before he passed. John believed in this guy. Easy to see why.
RIP
I miss him a lot. I’m grateful to have gotten to see John Prine live with Dan Auerbach back in 2017 in Richmond. What an experience that was.
One of my biggest regrets is not going see him live when I had the chance. Was truly heartbroken when he died.
Aw, yeah. He did make such a ripple in this World, and for a long time too.
This is music and never disappointed by Arlo’s music.
I've never heard a song that hit home so hard. I grew up in Ohio moved away for ten years and moved back. Ohio is where it is at it
really has a place in my Heart Forever.
Sitting in MT after 9 years away. Questioning if I could ever go back.
Ive lived in ohio my whole life and its the worst state out of the 30 states ive been to
The heart of it all
Brother man, Ohio needs you.
I didn’t know Arlo was from Ohio. that’s dope. another legend from my state.
Ohio Gang! This place builds some character!
Good stuff Arlo
From Florence, Yall
One of our hometown heroes. Representing Cincinnati proudly.
Break the heart of this Pittsburgh girl, OHIO the river.
The voice, Arlo.
Thank you.
Love every single note of every song that Arlo sings! He's the best!!
Got a good friend from Mansfield...good people down there!! 🇨🇦 🇺🇸
Always be you because you'll endear more to your sound than listening to some record company exec with a file cabinet full of songs "you need to record". Americana at its finest. Thanks Arlo.
Fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
🔥🔥🔥
Exactly how I felt when I left Cincinnati 20 years ago. C’mon down to Austin Arlo. You would feel right at home. I’m sure of it.
What a great song and sound. From a boy originally from Kent Ohio.
Not trying to troll. He actually was born and raised in Norwood, Ohio. 45212
I like a good hometown artist, but I love a great one. Much love from across the river in Florence Y'all!
I left Ohio 4 months ago and its been the best decision of my life... Southwest Ohio stand up!
Leroy, Ohio...my hometown
Heard on KNBT 92.1 and searched the chorus. Love this song.
Like a time capsule of my life...and many others....Thank u Bro. Pittsburgh

Wow, so real.............beautiful!
John Prine knew amazing talent when he saw it! Thanks
John💜. Arlo, your songs are so real and honest. You have a new fan forever.❤️. Thank you
You know you’ve been in SW Ohio too long when you recognize almost every building in the video lmao
Next year. Here I come Iowa, Indiana, & Missouri. 😍
Louisville loves Argo. You won't here it on the radio, but some great real country music around - Argo, Childers, Sturgill, John Wesley Godwin, Turnpike Troubadours, etc.
nothin but love for you in Dayton!
Get it Arlo!
My mom grew up right there…my family is all over that area! Been many times.
Best artist out right now
Arlo !!! 🤘
From sardinia Ohio, know exactly how you feel...
Really captured my mood about how I dropped everything to leave Cleveland and do OTR driving
I left Cleveland in 1995, went west to Oregon ended up in Florida. Stopped doing drugs and learned a trade and started a business. Arlo leaves me in tears 😢 for all the promises not kept.
I live in Indiana a few miles from Ohio. I recently bought the album. Outstanding. I know how he feels on this song. The entire album is wonderful real and engaging music. There needs to be more music like this.
This video make me want to head down to Gypsies for a drink!
Amazing!
this is amazing! I love it so much!!!!...miss you proud of you!!!
No matter what happens next out there, I'm glad this music's in my life. cheers!
So good.
Arlo you have became my favorite artist. You have blown me away.. Everytime. We need an Arlo show asap.
Another hit! You never disappoint. Keep it up!
I've left here and co.e back more than a few times ... even if you're not a Native Ohioan theres a strange draw to it all
Lived all over the country and no matter where I am , Ohio is always home
If I had A $1M I would pay you to come to Indianapolis and Rock out! Great Tune!
He will be in Indy July 16th unless things change
@@newbieboobie thats awesome...di you have a link or information? Was going try to find it...
@@newbieboobie thank you! I appreciate it....
Ive met him twice, and man, what a guy. One of the most humble and caring dudes out there.
Loving this new tune! 💣💥
this is sensational ! WOW! We are so lucky
Damn this sounds so good. A bit like The Band. Even Arlo. Love it
Wow, you're right, it does sound a lot like The Band (and that is a huge compliment).
This is probably well within my top five favorite albums of all time and I have an extensive collection and eclectic taste.
👑
Just listened to this and this is pretty good! Ohio born and raised!
My Great Grandma would tell stories of how her father once a month would take his horse drawn wagon from New Marion Indiana to Cincinnati. He'd go there to get kegs of beer, and return several days later, and have gypsies to come and stay. He apparently was an excellent Irish mandolin, and banjo player, so they'd drink the beer and play folk music day and night.
Very nice, patiently waiting for the release.
Thanks for this and sharing your talent.
❤️❤️❤️
Heard this for the first time today. The song reminds me of another song but I cannot think which one and it's driving me crazy.
Have you figured it out yet? Driving me crazy as well.
I am just such big fan. Oh my guy!!! you are amazing!!!!
Looks like he's got some Blaze Foley in him. Love it
I’ve waited a long time for this one! Great song! Incredible arrangement!
Can't wait till the black swamp art festival
This is incredible on so many levels. I just switch Cincinnati to Columbus, and it's my life. I might be in love with you. Also...Ohio isn't that bad.
Ohio is amazing!
You realize that the country way of life here is dying?
@@vincentgiordano2164 no it isn't. what part of Ohio are you in?
Central. Around an hour north of Columbus. Maybe it’s just here. I hope so. Neighborhoods are going up everywhere
Ohio must be a lot nicer after Columbus. Cincinnati hasn’t changed in years. And that ain’t good. Perhaps it’s cuz I’m still stuck here
Never been these places but this song rules 💖💖
Patiently waiting for the release of She’s Always Around and thought I’d just watch this beauty another few times while I’m here 😁
Keep up the great work! Definitely looking forward to this album!
perfect. ty arlo
💞
Your album is so good. Great job, Arlo! Love it!

Great song. and a pleasant suprise that I'm in Cinti!! Watching for a local show once the Covid cloud clears. Keep on playing man.

Perfect mix of Ryan Bingham and Tyler Childers with a little bit of Zach Bryan
Stay unique to your sound
ok I see you old friend....good job!!!!
Absolutely love this track. It was an instant ‘play again’ song for me. Check you out wearing a TC tshirt too 😉😁 great work Arlo ❤️
Never wanted to stay never wanted to go till i heard this song. Hoosier by birth. Its a trap. Been here for 10. See 100 more to go unless that ground still stays fertile
I haven’t stopped listening to this album since Jeremy Hutslar told me about it. I’m so fucking glad your dedication is paying off. Same with Jeremy Pinnell.
And you can still punch me. At least I can brag about it.
Damn i miss him.. get it figured out good buddy see ya soon.
Great tune in this damn song fits me to a t. I left ohio for higher ground
I love Arlo's songs, have all his albums, but my favorite is Arlo McKinley and the lonesome sound, every song is an A side
💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💚💙💪💪
WHO-DEY!
Great song AND video. What neighborhoods was this filmed in. I tried to figure it out, but I couldn’t quite get them all.
It was almost all filmed in Main Strauss in Covington, KY and in Newport, KY... very little or none was filmed in Ohio.
Is that Dave tickling the ivories?
Need more Arlo and less B105! Red Dirt Snakes will rise!!
See you in NC? Or meet you half way? We can tear up the night anywhere right?
yeah this song is exactly what living in ohio is like
Sweet Tyler Childers tshirt
I swear the first time I heard this song I thought it was Jason Isbell.
