“Ugly Truths” - Les Blackwell | MI Folk Sessions

- While travelling through Michigan on a tour with the amazing Pine & Fire, (who are having their own video next week so be ready!) we got to work with the wonderful Les Blackwell. Les sat down and gave us two songs, "Ugly Truths", an original that really hits hard and tugs at the heartstrings, and a classic "Trouble On My Mind", which will be coming down the line sometime.
Les was all laughs and personality the whole time we got to spend with him, and then out of nowhere just cranked out a deeply personal and emotional piece like this. I think this video really showcases his incredible talent and fantastic disposition that just draws you to want to hear more and spend more time with him. It was an absolute pleasure getting to work with him and hopefully we will have some more for you soon.

I feel like you wrote this about me and my father. I find comfort in this song, knowing that I know I'm not completely alone feeling this way. My father taught me how not to be a shit bag of a father myself, and that is the only thing I can thank him for. My daughter will never know the empty and lost feeling that comes with an abusive and abandoning father.
I’m going to be a new father in this December. I’m no contact with any of my family and most of that is my own dad’s fault. My brother died two years ago so I’m the last one of my entire blood line to carry my name. Once we move I’m changing it to my wife maiden name so it dies with him. I’m horrified to turn out like him but I keep remembering my own childhood and I have a good woman to keep me on the straight.

It has been said you can't know how someone feels until you've walked a mile in his shoes. It seems Mr. Blackwell has walked a mile or two. I see a broken young man laugh through his pain as I have done so many times I can't count and mostly for the same reason. I'm an old man now, so let me tell you young men in pain a thing or two that might help you now or later. Never be ashamed of why you hurt. Every time you open your heart and share your pain with another, it gets easier to deal with and overcome your own. Every time you help someone else get past their pain yours is paid for over and over again because what caused your pain now takes purpose, to help others. If you have trouble forgiving others, perhaps you should forgive yourself first, only then can you forgive anyone else.

I made the most peace I could with myself when the old man was here, 25 yrs ago when I tried to stop the recycle of him, we never spoke after. What lingers horrifies to realize there is no end to self actualizations, his passing… long bout a cancer, I was there for his last 12 hours, mostly alone, doing the death care to a shell. 😮The father n law(nasty man) joined him. It made me think that if they made it… there is a 3 way conversation or they both know all and converse… watch me melt a times, see their part in it and are sending me some miracle!
