Nice! Veteran aggro player here who sometimes dabbles in midrange (aggro+control). Love watching you go through the same albeit speed ran version of what most magic players end up doing. Play an aggro deck. Get tilted when op has all the answers. Decide to try more controlling decks. Realize it sucks trying to have all the answers and its better to be asking the questions/presenting the problems. Aggro player for life.
Well as much is i would like to see Raran playing a Storm Deck i would find it funnier if he gets a Group Slug or Group Hug Deck, like why do i let you guys draw Cards or what is Politics?
This is was so fun to watch. Now to enjoy magic as it was intended irl, you need to get into best of 3 and possibly try higher power formats like Pioneer (Explorer on arena). Paper magic is more fun, but as far as arena goes, Explorer is much higher power level. Also in Bo3, the whole obsession with mono red fades because you can sideboard cards to easily deal with them.
MTG Arena rewards longevity - I'm into my 3rd year following my return and have no problems crafting any deck I want - the key thing is little and often for games
I really understand that you don't like lands in Bo1 Standard, but I think in older formats and Bo3 lands become much more enjoyable to play with. Beeing able to play fetchlans + shocklands or surveil lands and not immedately lose, when you get mana screwed or flood, mitigate a lot of the downsides. Plus there are many busted lands, which are really fun to play with. That's why Timeless is my favorite fromat (and you have actual decision making as early as turn 1). From a deckbuilding standpoint it's also way better than HS system imo, because you are not locked into playing some cards only in a specific class, while also having dimishing returns for multicolored decks, such as having to pay a lot of life for shocklands or hatecards for greedy manabases (e.g. Bloodmoon). That being said for learning the game, Standard Bo1 is probably by far the best way to start. It's just not Magic at it's best imo.
As someone who has gotten bottom mythic 20+ times, congratulations. It wasn't the smoothest run but with a weasel and a falcon being your teachers, and you doing it in bloomburrow, I am pretty sure you count as a Disney Princess and a card carrying card gamer.
Idk if you’re gonna read this or do this challenge again. But, unless what you’re playing pre combat affects combat. It’s almost always strictly better to play your spells in main phase 2, opponents operating with less information
Awesome video. Magic is undoubtedly expensive. Especially if you don’t play consistently because of time commitment and other things but it does get cheaper the long you play for, especially if you are an above average player/drafter.
Arena is the most HS way to play Magic. Which is bad because HS was designed to be HS and not Magic. Standard bo1 laddering is just not where Magic shines. But it makes Hasbro money sooo
time is money, friend..... to quote some warcraft goblins . I spend €0 on MTGA, I didn't even buy the welcome bundle. Yet I have thousands of rare and mythic cards , all F2P. Note I am not even a regular player, I have skipped many sets and do not play for months sometimes... If I played all year round I could easily have 5,000 rares by now
Well Magic does have a metric shit ton of cards and Rarran went in spending money in most horrendously inefficient way possible. I still believe it's a much better F2P experience than Hearthstone. Or at least what it used to be, I heard they made some changes in recent years.
@@Blackadder75 I also spend nothing and can make about 90% of what I want, I used to play HS spending £35 per a set gaining maybe two useable legendaries (compared to MTGA which gives you rares and mythics and wildcards constantly.) I recently installed HS again to find that the Battlepass is 'payed entrance only' MTGA gives you enough gold and play tokens that a few drafts earn enough premium currency (gems) to buy the next Battlepass and genuinely play for free.
@@matevzgolob6782 I just came back to hearthstone after not playing for years and so far f2p has been great. They give you "returning packs" which have a bunch of cards from the last few expansions, also a bunch of free packs. I got something like 80 packs + 100 cards + my choice of a tier 1 constructed deck all for free.
Let me be honest. Most commander players also don‘t understand the game. Threat evaluation is often just a joke, people sit around niche interactions and discuss them for around 30 minutes but have no clue how it actually works
@@yargolocus4853 yes but no. In my playgroup there is a nice mix between good players that know their stuff but also a player who is totally new to the game. But have you seen how many commander shows there are on youtube and how little clue they sometimes have. This was not meant as a dig against commander players. It was more meant that grinding ladder on arena is much more frustrating than playing commander because commander usually is not only about winning but about having a jolly good time with your friends and just hang out. I personally think I could never again just walk into a store and go play commander with complete strangers because it can be very exhausting to not be on the same level regarding decks or personal intent
To all of those people watching who are mortified by how expensive it is: he probably went about the most expensive way to build decks. You can easily build decks just by paying free to play, or maybe you spend $5 weekly doing drafts. It doesn't have to be super expensive.
Doing Drafts is a good way to grind and is actually just a lot of fun. Not every deck is totally busted, the games are longer and the deckbuilding is great... just nothing for total new players, but if you come back after a long time and get comfortable with a set you can do nicely .
I finally hit legend in Hearthstone this month, first time since starting all the way back in closed beta, with a self-cooked Big Spell Mage variant. I get what you mean with the nerves. I was SO bad during my games in Diamond 1 and SO tilted when i was on Diamond 1 with 3 stars and a Pain warlock dropped 11/11 in stats on me on Turn 2, obviously knocking me off of the threshhold.
Never been this confused, trying to keep track on what's happening in a card game before. (first time ive seen the game played) super complicated game to understand but probably super rewarding when you do.
Magic is deeply complex and with the highest skill ceiling of any card game out there. Because of that though, the skill floor is much higher than what it is in hearthstone or pokemon. Give it a shot if you can, way better game than hearthstone imo
It took me 6h from D4 to Mythic with a dumb discard deck with 4x Rottenmouth Viper, 4x Bandit's Talent, 4x Nezumi-Informant and 4x Psychic Whorl. Add some removal that leaves stuff on the board for the vipers and some targeted removal for planeswalkers and creatures and some more discard cards and you're good to go. It's so frustrating to play against if you have a decent hand. Every 10th player just concedes when you start playing, but i recommend to not start discarding if you have the first turn. If the enemy plays a little smart they can recover unless you have the absolute nuts on hand. The decks stats were 47wins / 24 lose when i reached mythic.
First time mythic btw. I never reached Diamond before that either. It took me two weeks to reach Diamond from Silver with a blue/white control deck and 6 hour to reach mythic from that xD
I really think you should consider giving the Pokemon TCG another chance. The game is in a really good place right now, with a ton of decks being completely viable, and for less than $30 I was able to craft EVERY SINGLE CARD that appeared at the recent Worlds event. Literally 16 different decks, with all their different tech options. It's hard to overstate how good the economy is in Pokemon TCG Live, it's almost like they're giving it away.
Making a deck in MTG is expensive but you can always find some solid budget deck to craft if you're a new player and then progressively grind towards a more elaborate one

Absolutely killed me ! Came here from CGB, loved to watch the journey and hoping for more Magic in the future !
So, predictions on Rarren's commander when he inevitably plays EDH?
Well as much is i would like to see Raran playing a Storm Deck i would find it funnier if he gets a Group Slug or Group Hug Deck, like why do i let you guys draw Cards or what is Politics?
I think he'd like some kinda prison deck
Based on what he pulled from packs on stream, Sidisi or Meren seem like the most likely picks.
@babatazyah oh damn I'd love go see Sidisi
Otter
I loved the WHERE ARE THE LAAAAAAANDDDSSS. Gotta love going on a 10 game win streak and then getting land screwed 3 games in a row.
Loved your magic streams! Love from Belgium ❤
Finally. Rarran has escaped the hole, and embraced an adult's card game.
38:04 "The master gave rarran a mythic rank ?? Rarran is a free elf!!!"
How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Lands System
Now we need to see Rarran play the real MTG experience: MTGO playing a format like modern
38:23 Congrats. Making it to mythic in your first month is a feat.
Yay MtG. Couldn't watch all the streams so a summary is amazing
Awesome video. Magic is undoubtedly expensive. Especially if you don’t play consistently because of time commitment and other things but it does get cheaper the long you play for, especially if you are an above average player/drafter.
Only a 38 minute video? That is impressive for how much footage you had from livestreams, excited to watch!
Arena is the most HS way to play Magic. Which is bad because HS was designed to be HS and not Magic.
Standard bo1 laddering is just not where Magic shines. But it makes Hasbro money sooo
Coming from CGB's subscribers, and love to see the climb. You have a new subscriber, good sir!
I’ve pushed mythic once or twice, all with homebrews and it’s seriously no joke. Congrats.
10:41 that was most Canadian holyyy I have ever heard I love it hahahaha 🇨🇦
The misplay on the game before Mythic is so classic. We've all been there! Congrats bro! One of us!
cangratulations, well deserved, you put a lot of effort into this
The fact that you spent 500 dollars on a digital card game and you still only have access to a fraction of the cards is insane.
time is money, friend..... to quote some warcraft goblins .
@@Blackadder75 I also spend nothing and can make about 90% of what I want, I used to play HS spending £35 per a set gaining maybe two useable legendaries (compared to MTGA which gives you rares and mythics and wildcards constantly.)
I recently installed HS again to find that the Battlepass is 'payed entrance only' MTGA gives you enough gold and play tokens that a few drafts earn enough premium currency (gems) to buy the next Battlepass and genuinely play for free.
@@KM-qr4li we present to you: The Whale!
I can confirm that platinum hell is a thing in HS too.
Im gonna watch the hell out of your Commander games Rarran :)
I watched all the stream vods of this and it was a really good time
I hope to get to watch you do this again ❤
10:45 I died, went to the graveyard, then got exiled 😂😂😂😂
Halfway through and I hear that Rarren on a commander show is on the line and IM INVESTED I NEEEEEED IT
Let me be honest. Most commander players also don‘t understand the game. Threat evaluation is often just a joke, people sit around niche interactions and discuss them for around 30 minutes but have no clue how it actually works
Commander is best specifically for a persistent playgroup, so this is mostly a take on how your friendcircle plays
I've been playing for four years, daily for quite some time, and I've never spent a cent. It's very possible.
Damn haha good job dude that’s nutty 🙌🏼
Congrats rarran !
Most mtg players dont grind anywhere close to that high !
Can't wait to see you play the Commander show!
Nice one, congrats. I do hope you try best of 3 at some point, you might like it even more. Bo1 favors aggro strategies.
Looking forward to the commander game!
I enjoyed this. Make it a series!!!
BIG! FUCKING! CONGRATULATIONS!
WOW! Now I want to see you play that commander game!!!!
Rarran, when you feature in the EDH/Commander video shout it out and let us know, I love watching your content and watching you play Magic has been amazing to watch. Gratz on Mythic!!
Platinum definitely has the most deck diversity.
Having been playing since the game first came out, I officially give you permission to just call the game "Magic."
Seriously though, congrats - and I'm glad you're enjoying the game!
Commander is the best! Good on you for knowing
