Is ITALIAN Football DEAD? How Can Italian Football Recover?

  • It wasn’t too long ago when Italian football redeemed itself by winning Euro 2020, and deservedly so. With a decent core of youth and experience, this team was gonna go far.
    With a brilliant football, this team proved that Italian football wasn’t just about defending for 90 minutes, and yes, there are still people who have that perception...just because they watched 2 games in the 90’s.
    Anyway, times were good...but fast forward to today, Italy’s gonna miss the world cup for the 2nd time in a row.
    Missing 1 world cup was disastrous...2nd time in a row...honestly, I still haven’t digested it yet.
    But the question is...Is Italian football dead? And does Italian football need a total revolution? Or just an evolution?
    Well...Let’s take a stock on what’s going on in Italian football today...
    I think there should be structural changes, and God knows, those changes have been needed for a while.
    Afterall, the last time Italy won a World Cup match was when Luis Suarez was still biting people, and when you think about that, you gotta admit certain things have gone VERRRY wrong for Italian football.
    Let’s not forget, Italy won the Euros just months ago. Let’s not take a scorched earth policy where just an evolution would do the trick.
    Italian football wasn’t perfect nine months ago during the Euros, and it’s is not rotten now, but it is alarming for Italian football to not make the 2nd World Cup in a row.
    Whether you like them or not, the World Cup is a lot more colorful with Italy in it, than out of it. It’ll be interesting on how Italian football will take the next few steps to take.

    Awesome video! I think Italy’s main problem is it relies too much on older players without a succession plan, you look at how AC Milan fell and how Juventus are now falling because all their old players eventually packed it in. I do think the end of Juve’s monopoly will do wonders for Serie A however

    It's been a year since this video and Italian football has made the changes you recommended. More youth players are in the national team and in Italian clubs, Italy made it to the U20 FIFA World Cup final and Italian players have received FIFA awards for best goalkeeper and top scorer for U20 FIFA WC, 3 Italian clubs made it to the UEFA finals this season and Italy made it to the Nations League semi-finals. There is still a long way to go in terms of actually winning European trophies, but I think by World Cup 2026, Italy would have become a strong force in the competition. They are most definitely improving since not qualifying for the world cup in 2022 for a second time.

      I think Italian football is on a decent course at this point. The regret would be the fact that the people in charge didn't manage to monetize on the recent success of clubs doing better in Europe, of the National team winning the Euros, and the serious intentions of clubs (like Milan) of building new stadiums. The new viewership contract that's offered is more or less the same as the current one. Hope this gets better as we go

    I agree. My main concern is that they start old players that can’t perform good as they use to be. They rely on the old players too much where they don’t want to take risky chances to start young players in the big spotlight. Another thing is that when they have opportunities to score they can’t seem to finish and score. I’m not Italian but I’m a big fan of the national team and inter, and I see great potential and a good future in them. I like them when they play a 4-3-3 formation. That’s what made them won the euros. The correct formation and having young talent on the field like chiesa, Barella, di Lorenzo. They can put like 2-3 old players but I wouldn’t over do it because in this generation young talent is being created everywhere with new tactics. Italy need young talent and new tactics

    Great vid mate. I think you should compare the 2006 vs 2022 Italian team and see how much different they are. 2006 has Luca Toni, Inzaghi, De Rossi, Pirlo, Buffon, and other world beaters. In 2022 they have... (sigh) Ciro Immobile, Inzigne, and Chiesa, while these players are good, let's face it, they aren't world beaters.
    For that 'It works in the Euro 2020' argument, I personally think their team is bit overrated. If you look at them, they never beat a strong team bar the declining Belgium nor they dominated one. Spain probably should have eliminated them and they never really unlocked England's defence bar that Bonucci goal. It's kinda like England went to semis at the WC while beating only Sweden and losing twice to Belgium.
    I also agree with the youth aspect one. Italy's squad is aging, Jogi and Immobile are in 30s now, Bonucci will probably retire soon, and Inzigne is basically finished. They only have Chiesa, Barella, and Donnarumma as their world class young prospect and Donnarumma is basically throwing his talent away by joining PSG. Serie A's decline will also limit their ceiling though.
    Italian players and football federation need to be more humble, they're still stuck with their glorious past. Time to admit Germany, France, Spain, and yes, even England has better national football quality and learn from their mistakes.

    • @FootballDrawn

      Hi Yoshua. Thank you for the comment. Really enjoyed reading it 🙏🙏
      Yeah indeed. I think Italian football should borrow a page from the French football of the 90's, where they missed out on 90, and 94, and went on to create a generation that won 98, and Euro 2000, while setting up foundations for the next decades. The same could be said about German football when the old guard retired in 98, and severely stagnated in early 2000's (despite going to WC final in 2002), until a generation (with a different philosophy) was ready to take the 2006 World Cup in home soil.

    I think main problem of Italy in Serie A and NT is the same. For some reason one of the best systems in terms of creating quantity of really good domestic players (like in the 80s and 90s) stopped doing so, or if it does it's not on scale it used to be. And quantity brings quality. Italian style of play is historically 1:0 and its maybe the best one for wining, even if it's not pretty. I don't think that should change it's just that quality of players is not what it used to be and there is not enough of it.

    • @FootballDrawn
      @FootballDrawn  Рік тому

      Indeed. There's a cycle to every generation, and it seems like its not the same as it was in the 80's and 90's. The late 2000's and early 2010's had so many failed youngsters, who were supposed to be the next (insert legend name), and that created a large gap between generations.

      I think they'll actually go through...but the possibility of missing is there as well. As always, making things harder than it should be.
      Thank you sooo much for the comment. Really appreciate it :))

    Not only the italian national team, but even Serie A is declining. Italian football needs drastic changes everywere or they will just keep going downhill.

      Indeed. I think winning the Euros could've been an amazing step for that, but unfortunately, they went out of the World Cup. There are some good signs, but many other things that have to catch up, from infrastructures, to youth setups, to investments, and many other things. Otherwise, it could end up like Hungary in future. Just a distant memory of an amazing football nation that's no longer amazing.
      Thank you for watching the video, and for writing the comment. Really appreciate it 🙏🙏

    Has anyone ever won the Euro's and not qualified for the next world cup ever?

    • @FootballDrawn
      @FootballDrawn  6 місяців тому

      From memory, I think when a dodgy team won it in the past (Denmark 92 - Failed to qualify for 94, and Greece 04 - didn't qualify for 06). There's probably more in the past, but these are the 2 that I remember within my lifetime...and yes, I'm that old :))

    Italies problem is too many foreign players in serie A.
    They had the same issue in tge late 70s and the Figc put a rule of only three foreigners per team.
    It eorked, tge young boys played and became stars and since tgen Italy win two W/C.
    Today your lucky if you see mire then two Italians 8n a team.

    Its because seria is slow paced football, player too much diving..need more attacking, lack of skilled player because of defensive tactic..

    Italian football need to focus on attack and youth.

      Absolutely dude. That, and infrastructure. Some of the stadiums need a massive rebuild. I praise clubs who have built or modernized their stadiums, such as Juve and Atalanta, while Milan and Inter have been aggressive towards a new stadium plan. Hopefully others follow along as well.

    This video is mising one huge aspect and that is about finance and the fact most italian clubs barely make any money from match day revenue.
    This is holding the league back in everything from increased revenue, sponsorships, tv deals etc and until this is corrected with at least Roma and both Milan clubs getting their stadiums by the end of the 2020s then the 2020s will be a quet decafe for Italy by i do expect the 2030s to be a real resurgence for Italian football.

    • @FootballDrawn
      @FootballDrawn  2 місяці тому

      Indeed. I think there's gonna be a need for many corrections (big or small), and finances will be a side-effect of those corrections. I think Italian football is in much better place, compared to mid-2010's. However, there's still a verrrrrrrrry long way to go.

      @@FootballDrawn Agreed and I see the Serie A getting stronger as the rest of the 2020s go about but just wanted to point out that due to majority of clubs not owning their stadiums and the satadiums being so far away that it really affects the TV viewing Experience as well as the overall atmosphere making matches feel much quieter than it should be and this affects the leagues ability to increase their overseas TV deals.
      I belive that if the big Six teams in Italy being Roma, AC, Inter, Lazio, Juventus and Napoli have their own modern privately owned stadiums which all signs point to especially with both Milan clubs and Roma getting over the last steps then I think that will really help the league as the smaller clubs get access to increased TV money which would allow them to financially compete better and even get their own stadiums and the bigger clubs can financially compete with the other big teams across europe.
      Overall fans of Italian football just need to be more patient and to wait for basically Roma and the Milan clubs to get their stadium which is why I think the 2030s is going to be a real boom for Italian Football in overall competitiveness and prestige and marketing.

    The trouble with Italian football is too many foreign players in the Italian football League. Italian football was better off without all the foreign players they brought into the domestic game. Italy please go back to one foreign player in the Italian league. Bring in home grown players and bring them through like you used to do! I can't believe they didn't qualify for a 2nd World Cup but this has been coming for a while. When Italy attack and play open football they can beat anyone. They proved this in 1978 and 1982! Bearzot made a tactical error when he took Francesco Causio off against Holland....Big mistake......Italy should have been World Champions in Argentina in 1978 they played some of the best football in that tournament beating the host nation 1 0 in the River Plate Stadium. They should have had 6 World Cup titles!! They have been better than Brazil!! Even tho Brazil have 5 World Cup titles. They will win another World Cup I'm sure because it's in their DNA!! Via I'Italia!!! A very sad Italian.....🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹❤

      Hi Tony. Thank you sooo much for the comment. Really enjoyed reading it 🙏🙏
      Yeah, indeed. There's a solid point in letting more home grown players (just like in the 90's, where there was a cap on foreign players you could register)

      Bravo. Well put my friend. The one World Cup Italy should’ve won was 1990. By far the best team in that tournament. The one mistake Zenga made in that tournament against Argentina cost Italy the World Cup. Even though Italy got to the final in 94, for me, the 1990 squad was far superior. The same can be said for the 78 squad. Italy’s World Cup winning team of 82 will always be my favourite. Not because they won the World Cup, but rather how they won it. Beating all of the top nations in style. When you beat, Argentina,Brazil and then Germany, no one can deny you’re the best in the world. Italy will have glory days again!!

      Yeah dude...absolutely. I miss the era of the sugar daddy presidents of the 90's. It was almost like a popularity contest for Italian football owners. Mad presidents spending (by the standards of 90's) like there's no tomorrow😀😀
