This isn’t a cyber hack, this is the end result of successive governments providing no direction or certainty in energy policy.
The country is running with very limited capacity due to switching off all the coal power stations. They’ve been replaced with renewable energy resulting in a lack of inertia on the grid.
Summer time is when planned work is done on power stations due to lower demand, meaning even less excess capacity. You lose two big plants in a region...mass power cuts are the result.

There is a real problem as the power company in control blamed it on 2 generators failing at same time. This is a lie as the wind farm did not fail. Wind generators are designed for the safety of those working on power lines and when they are not conected to a mian gernerating system the fail safe cuts them out.

The power went off just as I turned the hob on. I was starting to make a curry. I thought it was my fault. Then, as I'm wandering around trying to figure out how to report the fault, the battery powered smoke alarm beeped a couple of times. What was that about?!! My neighbour's power had gone off, too. I was really panicking that it was my aging cooker that had done it. Good (sort of) to find out that it was a national issue and, therefore, probably not because I'd turned one of the rings on.
However, as I'm saying this I'm making myself nervous. In the current social climate, in the UK, there will be a proportion of people who will read this and be convinced that it WAS my fault. I'm going to have to be vigilant, against retribution, for a while.

A few things need to be considered here. First is to put in place a better framework for the construction of pumped storage these stations can be up and running in 15 seconds or around 2 minutes depending upon whether spinning reserve or start up. The last pumped storage was Dinorwig.Existing pumped storage was not sufficient to stop a blackout. It also has the benefit of the grid being able to utilise more wind and solar power. Next the grid needs to be made smarter such that blackouts can be more discrete such that transport and other critical infrastructure can be kept running and less critical requirements shed. The government also needs to put a better framework in place to support domestic generation with batteries such that domestic batteries can also be used by the grid to manage demand and blackouts and also move forward with electric car to grid for the same reason.

I think that most of the alarms that I noticed were home or business intruder alarms. It didn't affect cars including mine and there's no reason why it should.
However, if an EMP shut down a couple of generators then coincidentally it could also trigger some car alarms. However, it didn't affect my broadband connection (I run it through a battery back up system) and I would have thought that an EMP would definitely affect that due to the low currents and voltages that they operate on.

If it was an EMP powerful enough to shut down an alternator's control system why would "the powers that be" try to hide it? We do get solar storms which, I think, can affect sensitive electronics, but I know from experience that alternator control systems are very rugged. If it had been initiated by a nuclear explosion in space it would have been noticed by thousands of professional and amatuer astronomers around the world and reported on extensively. Such a powerful EMP would have shut down my broadband and landline, but it didn't.
The power outage was most probably caused by one large CCGT alternator shutting down due to a fault, its protection and control system detecting a non-existent fault due to a fault of its own, or operator error. Because the loss of generation brought the grid frequency down to below a certain value the large wind farm automatically disconnected itself from the grid thereby exacerbating the frequency problem. In order to prevent the whole grid system collapsing (as it would when the system frequency fell too low, much like a car stalling) some load had to be shed until spare generation could be called up and the load gradually restored.
The railways were affected so badly because signalling systems failed due to loss of power and electric locomotives couldn't restart without a technician even though power was actually restored within a relatively short time. I was without power for about 40 minutes. Friends 20 miles away weren't affected at all.
If an EMP had been powerful enough to shut down alternator's and set off car alarms it would have also disabled moving vehicles by affecting their electronic engine management systems and the Canbus networks that most vehicles use nowadays. It would also have affected pacemakers and communications. GPS would have failed. I've not seen any reports of satnav failures.

Tory-boy fining a private company is no way to run the UK's national electricity grid, which should be re-nationalised and someone put in charge who actually knows what they are supposed to be doing - keeping the lights on all the time!
The UK's wind turbines generate an average of 160GWh of energy per day, equivalent to an average power of 6.6GW. These wind power generators can be configured with energy storage and back-up power to provide dependable, resilient power on demand, for example as follows.
    Peak Demand Power: 6.94 GW
Daily Usage of Energy: 104 GWh
    Wind Power Capacity: 21.5 GW
    Wind Capacity Factor: 31%
Wind energy per day (average): 160 GWh
    Storage Energy Capacity: 133 GWh
    Back-up power: 2.08 GW
That's the configuration text from the "Row C" configuration from the Wind Generation Capacity Focus Table from my Wind, Solar, Storage and Back-up System Designer, on-line free calculator tool.
Tory-boy has failed to invest in the UK grid energy storage to match the growth in wind power capacity, with predictable adverse consequences for grid stability.
Instead of the about 133GWh / 7GW of energy storage we ought to have by now, the UK grid has less than 30GWh / 3GW, most of which is pumped storage hydroelectricity that was built decades ago, when Tory-boy was just a glint in Tory-dad's eye.
The National Grid recently reorganised to hive off its grid management to a separate legal entity "National Grid Electrical System Operator" with a smaller turnover and liable for smaller fines, allowing the Tory-boys and their bankster backers to game the system to make increased profits with more power cuts.
Has Tory-boy also cut corners to buy cheap trains that can't be restarted by their drivers after a power cut? Really?
Once more the British public are being played like fools by the Tory-boys looking to make a quick buck at the expense of our services and quality of life.
Ah capitalism. If only the people with the money had a clue what to spend it on.

The EU also send more into the UK than we send to them so any trade war will damage the EU. They know trade will continue under WTO terms with out a deal. Those WTO terms have seen the UKs world trade grow and since 2009 that world trade has been bigger and more important than our EU trade. EU trade can also grow under those same terms.
