The Martin Tower Implosion - An Icon of Bethlehem PA

- For 47 years, the Bethlehem skyline was dominated by none other than the "Martin Tower", the world headquarters for the famous Bethlehem Steel. Not long after the tower went up, the company was struck with major financial problems. A shortage of workers, the shrinking need for steel, and high corporate spending caused the company to fail. By 2003, the company went bankrupt and moved out of the tower. With the property up for sale, a few dozen businesses moved into the first couple floors. However, the building was soon found to have concerning levels of asbestos and other harmful issues. By the year 2007, the skyscraper stood entirely vacant. Many plans were tossed around about the reuse of the tower and property, but the final decision was to demolish it. In 2017, asbestos removal began. The demolition was confirmed in January of this year, much to the disappointment and sadness of many locals who lived near or had relatives who worked inside the historic building. In the days leading up to the implosion, construction crews made relief cuts throughout the building's structure to help assist in the collapse. Finally, on the crisp morning of May 19th, 2019, the charges were set off at 7:04 am and the Martin Tower was erased from the Bethlehem skyline forever. Cleanup of the debris is expected to take up to a year to complete. Once finished, the area will be converted into commercial buildings such as hotels, storage, and a shopping center. Steel from the tower will be recycled, and the concrete will be reused in the foundations of the buildings that follow. I was glad I could document another piece of local history that people can look back on in years to come.

I grew up seeing this building every day, and I shed a tear when I saw it just crumble into nothing
The state of Beth Steel's Pride and Joy right there. Abandoned for over a decade and reduced to rubble in a matter of seconds.
I was there with two other friends on that same side. They were much closer while I positioned myself in a clearing behind Bethlehem Compost Center.
Nice film!
The shock waves filmed inside your truck are intense!
Glad you chose to include the clip.
Thanks for the synopsis of the building in the description!
Very good!
👍👍
This is BEAUTIFULLY edited Austin!!! INSANE video bro!!!
Perfect job: It makes me remember something that happened years, years ago..
That really sucks man! I hate seeing old buildings destroyed. I feel like that's a building that some day they might regret demolishing.
It's almost scary. Seeing a structure that looks so structurally sound collapse so quickly.
I'll miss Martin Tower.
who knew in 1972 that the building would stand only 47 years
My wife and I watched from South mountain...the sound was still intense
😱
That’s kind of sad if you ask me Austin, but if it was abandoned it’s better off to get rid of it than let it fall by itself.
Rest In Peace for that tower, great video as well good job.
Hope you have a good night 😊❤️🌙👍🏻👍🏻
Wow, looks so scary when you don’t know what’s going on
Reminds me of 911.
I was there, it wasn't too scary for me cuz everyone was safely distanced and I was there hours before it happened lol.
Great video, sad to see the end of an era.
I play for the Bethlehem Steelers football team and I used to look at that building during practice all the time
The people who saw this felt it was a funny thing and joyous, but in a way, it was the passing of an industry that provided thousands of jobs to those who lived in Bethlehem, and in the communities in which the steel company had plants and offices
Sound like mostly illegals that had nothing to do with the building of this beautiful building and country.
Thank you for this interesting piece of reporting.
It’s kind of sad, really, that we now depend on China for most of our steel, due partly to the mismanagement of that corporation.
I live right near it but I was on vacation when it went down
Amazing. Great video.
This is awsome and cool!!!!! NICE CATCH DUDE!!!!
Yeah It Looked Like A Terrorist Attack!!! But I Am Sad To See A Building Have To Be Demolished, But It Had To Be Done, And At Least The Steel, And The Cement From The Building Will Be Reused: Not Tossed Away!!!
Holy Moly!!! It Looked Like Both A Tornado, And A Hurricane Leveled That Building, And It Also Looked Like A Bomb Destroyed That Building Too!!!
That Is A Statement; The Vibrations Tell How Powerful A Lot Of TNT (Dynamite) Can Truly Be!!!
TNT is only "dynamite" in an obnoxious Australian Metal Band song. Might as well say "Vegemite."
Hi Austin, Love your work... Question...How many stories and how tall was the Martin Tower?
21 stories, 332 ft tall.
I missed it by a minute all I saw was a cloud of smoke
Nice footage! Looks sad 😞
There is only one ground zero and that ain't it no way in hell
On mine gosh!!!!!
Kinda sad, one piece of history gone..
Oh my!
some dude paragliding in background? or what was that?
Sean Ring - Yea it was! I actually didn’t notice that until I got the video onto my computer to edit this! I was like “holy crap! There’s a glider up there!” 😂
