Track Seven of Public Life
LYRICS
You're leaning into the mirror
Stepping out and the sidewalks bloom
Shoeless mosses and heather
Feels like your Gaynor Mindens do
Guilty of guilt, and sick of the sickness
Heart like a jury trying to convict us
But your Midtown blouses are covered in sequins
For God's sake, you can dance it out with your
Smoky sunrise Geranium eyes
Remember, we never forget how to fly
Smoky sunrise
Smoky sunrise in your eyes
And I wouldn't blame you
Your mother needs a call or a calling out
And she can't forgive you
But you've been learning to forgive yourself
Guilty of guilt, and sick of the sickness
Heart like a jury trying to convict us
But your Midtown blouses are covered in sequins
For God's sake, you can dance it out with your
Smoky sunrise Geranium eyes
Remember, we never forget how to fly
Smoky sunrise
Smoky sunrise in your eyes
In his sophomore album, Public Life, Joshua Lee Turner weighs his life as a touring musician against a newfound appreciation for time spent at home. Turner embraces imperfection and limitation, choosing to record the album almost entirely to 4-track cassette and producing, mixing, and filming it in his apartment. With stripped-down arrangements, intimate lyrics, and virtuosic guitar playing, Public Life blends 1970s sounds with 2020 contemplations of home, friendship, work, and social media.

About Josh Turner Guitar
Joshua Lee Turner is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer based in Brooklyn, New York. Josh is best known for his UA-cam channel Josh Turner Guitar, where he has been posting eclectic cover performances and original music since he started the channel in 2007 at age 15. Josh now tours internationally in support of his own original music, as well as with long-time collaborator Carson McKee, as the folk duo The Other Favorites. In 2019, Josh released As Good a Place as Any, his first full-length album of original music.
This guy just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t he
I feel like he's always been this great.
I also feel like you should end all your comments with, "Positive Comment Man, AWAY!!!!!!"
Yes, he does.
Username checks out
Positive Comment Man Has always reminded me of a young James Taylor but better.
I couldn’t agree with you more. He’s infectiously addictive.
You're the hero of every bedroom recording musician. So good.
Haha yea Joshua Lee Turner and Billi Eilish 😆 never thought I’d say those two names in the same sentence
thats right haha
Def...super good. I'd love a rig rundown lol
@@drummer92192 In older videos he posts his signal chain in the info. I assume he's using most of the same stuff here. He's the reason I picked up an Art Pro VLA II.
Mike Rosenblat well, in terms of guitars I know he owns and has used (on this album and the last) a D’Angelico Deluxe Atlantic, a Mexican built Fender Telecaster (seen here), a 1969 Martin D-12-35 (used for Public Life), a rebuilt 1961 Harmony H162 ("Morris", used for 319), a 1965 Gibson B-45-12, a Gitane D-500, a Cordoba C10 (used in Belle and Like Lightning, among others), and a Martin 000-28H (also used for Like Lightning, along with many other originals and covers), among others that I’m sure I’m missing. He also is recording the album almost completely on 4-track cassette, I'm not sure what mics he uses.
Edit: some of this info might be wrong, and I don’t know the model of any of his other instruments and I could be missing some guitars, I’m just going off what I can remember. This is also the stuff he's used for any videos, he hasn't used all of them for this album
Sipping on tea, and listening to great music. Life's good.
Who knew I'd find one favorite youtuber in the comments section of another lol
Great to find you here!
That's your best song in my opinion! Cheers from Brazil!
I share your opinion. Also my son his favourite road trip song
I love the way you're releasing these songs through youtube videos. Also, for whatever it's worth, I have huge respect for the quality of your recordings. Really nice work and lovely music.
I listen to many different talented artists on UA-cam doing covers of great songs, and I really enjoy them. But then when I hear their own songs I’m always mildly disappointed that the songs never reach the level of greatness of song’s written by the great musicians of the past. Your songs, however, are truly works which add to and exceed the greatest songs ever written.
I agree!
the original I was blown away with was not his but his friend Larkin Dodgen's called "Rainy Day". that song should be on the radio. ua-cam.com/video/XpB12yxn3Gg/v-deo.html
Completely agree.
Absolutely Fantastic!
Lucky cat back there grooving to the beat.😀
A-W-E-S-O-M-E
Look what you did! Something else.
Great stuff man. If this album was released back in the 70s by one of the revered artists of the time it'd be one of the 'classics' for sure. I mean it's just as great today but what I'm saying is I hope it gets the love it deserves!
I'm just speechless, what a great musician!
Probably the most beautiful chord progression ever 🙏🏼
Only just occurred to me that you've been wearing the same shirt for the duration of recording this album. After you get the recognition you deserve, that shirt could hang in a museum someday.... great stuff as always Josh!
Not arguing that it couldn't be in a museum, but I'm guessing he recorded many of the songs live on the same day, thus wearing the same outfit, and just releases the videos sporadically.
@@ascetic3312 Ya, probably did a bunch of recording one day, then does all the mixing and editing and releases them as done.
That is the conundrum of recording multiple videos in one day. Change outfits, just change thumbnail? This young man is amazing. The editing is great, not too slick, but very professional.
One of the best artists of the generation.
I found this guy a long time ago when I wanted to listen to quien sera to learn Spanish. I like how he keeps popping up in my recommended because it's quite nice
And you'll get notifications every time he releases a song if you subscribe and turn on the notification bell.
Out here in the far, far West, in summer, a smokey sunrise is normal. No girls in sequin dresses, but the mood, the cool chords, the lyric line, and your eminently listenable voice--well, thanks. Looking forward to the CD.
This time without a sad face at the end :D
Joking aside, this song is one of my favourites. Your songwriting is just so good, man.
Very good !!!! Beautiful song, beautiful atmosphere. Taylorish melody.
I really like that bass line!
So, I was listening to this thinking, "What an impressive cover of..." and I couldn't think of the original. I KNEW it was a song I'd heard before, and logged away in my brain at some point as a classic. Turns out I had mentally logged your demo of this song as an instant classic. My brain was right! Great Song. Well done! I hope to we get see you in Aus in October, or as soon as you can get here, I was was so ready for you in May!
So I'm not the only one that thinks it's so familiar.
That makes 3 of us!
same :)
Waiting for you in Rome, Italy...soon. We hope!
This is very reminiscent of some popular songs played on the radio in the Sixties, as far as my memory is concerned.
You are so talented you make it look like it's second nature. I am in awe.
Above all the great music you've been releasing recently, let me just say how impressed I am that you've been filming all this inside your home instead of a studio. Well done mate.
studio costs money.
He has set up his own studio at home.
This is the kind of music I want to make when I get older. Thanks for being an inspiration to a teenage musician Josh!
Friend of a Friend
It’s been said before, I agree, this song is a hit. A neo 60s masterpiece. Good music never goes out of fashion. 😄
The green shirt! The theme for Fridays..
Fantastic piece!
A fucking legend in the making!
Looks like all things are easy for him. I guess however there's a lot of work before. So nice to hear him again and again, covers and originals as well. Every relistening reveals a surprise. Immortal sound.
Love! Love!
Smooth as silk JoSh
Josh, what a beautiful thing you made. True talent.
The instruments compliment your voice so well, Josh. Great work. Love the album!
Getting to know this album a week at a time has been so enjoyable, every song, quality and getting better with every listen, bless you!!
divino, como siempre
Damn this is really great, instantly fell in love with this song. Lyrics and guitar playing are top notch as usual.
Lovely melody.
Smoooth.
History has just been created, this is special, rollover Eric, Josh is the new "God" , classic work
Loved that manual vibrato 🔥🔥
This guy is so talented. Hes probably a good business man as well. He could start a record company. The skies the limit for this guy.
Still my favorite musician
Great song Josh. Don't be shy about making your voice front and center in the mix. That's where the soul of the song is.
This is a fantastic song! Definitely sick of the sickness.
Feels like somewhere between Stealers Wheel and Dire Straits; I love this.
My fav so far
Josh Turner, what an amazing musician you are! Talent to burn!
Didn’t think this song could get any better. Lo and behold, it did.
Love this song!
Beautiful.
Great Song!
Killer Pop
That gets the job done and makes my day...
It s so good to feel swept up and uplifted by a melody that wasn't written 20 years or more ago. I hope to watch you live in time!
I like this one alot!
Classy vibes
Beautiful song...beautiful musicianship....beautiful vocals....I'll be buying the vinyl!!!! Thank You!!!
Thank you, Joshua Lee. Your music, your brilliance is helping me get through these strange times.
Beautiful Josh
Eres un genio de la música
I am loving this honest and powerful album, Joshua! I hear in this song Michael Franks mixed with James Taylor with early Paul McCartney with a pinch of Gordon Lightfoot made just right with Josh Lee Turner.
Nice tune, nice lyrics, nicely done. You seldom disappoint. P.S. Thanks for the captioning for those of us with elder ears.
this is huge
You are a huge inspiration to all the artists out there trying to find their way, Thx mate!!
Man you are churning through some great writing, its inspirational
love how the bass starts simulating a booming kick drum midway through the song.
My very fav song of a beautiful album. Well done Josh on yet more amazing music
Badass!
Sublime
awesome song!
Great job !! Beautiful song !
What a smoky sounding sunrise! Great!
Very interesting; very flesh song, a urban song. the sound of the city. wonderful josh!
Love this song already. I worried that you might have gone and "fixed it up" and overworked something out of it, but here it is, intact, and about as perfect as you're ever going to get it. Might listen again ...
Rockin' the Reverend bass!
its actually an ibanez talman (tb100) but similar shape as the reverends
Fantastic ear candy to start the day with. Great song, Josh! Have listened to it 4 times this morning and still it doesn't get boring or old at all.
This is my favorite song on the album so far!
I’ve been listening / watching your video music a few months now. I love your music. I love the older music and your original.
I predominantly listen to southern gospel and blue grass Gospel... and 80’s country 80’s pop music. I prayThe Lord continues to bless your music. Out of all that I’ve seen/heard so far, your music is clean and enjoyable to listen to.. I’m in my late 50’s and unless it’s Gospel singers, there isn’t many younger singers I enjoy listening to... thanks for Sharing) on line. I have a few health issues and don’t go to concerts anymore( even before COVID-19 🤷♀️😷)
Stay safe.🙏✝️🙏
You might take a look at Larkin Poe. Not Gospel, but definitely Southern. Allman Brothers and blues.

One of the best, so far.
What talent. Keep them coming Mr. Turner. Been a fan for a long time. You never disappoint with anything you play. Excellent recording skills too. Keep us smiling through the pandemic.
Josh and I are about the same age, and I also grew up listening to The Eagles, Simon & Garfunkel, Elvis and Phil Collins.
I'm a huge fan of prog metal these days but will always love this stuff as well. Time to pre-order your album.
It's smoother than a cue ball.
Nice tune Josh.
