Hi all! I'm not sure why this video is getting so many views recently, but I'm glad you're here. This was an early prototype for a class project. For the curious, here are some quick design details: The player moves were detected using hall effect sensors and magnets embedded in each piece. The board's moves were handled by a 2-axis movement system much like what you'll find in 3D printers or CNC machines. The pieces were picked up using a magnet attached to a servo on the carriage. A RPi 3 was used to process moves and send them over WiFi to a simple web server, which let multiple people with boards play each other remotely, play against opponents on Lichess, or play against Stockfish. As you can probably tell, there were a bunch of issues with this early design. Some of them, like the pawn sticking to the knight and undetected moves, were fixed by making the board larger (more space between pieces), the pieces heavier, and the magnets stronger. Piece captures were handled better by first moving the captured piece off to the side of the board. Castling was done by moving the rook halfway off the board and sliding it behind the king. There were a bunch of problems I never did manage to solve, however. For example, I never really handled promotion properly. In the case of the player, I always made the assumption that they promoted to a queen. RFID may be a possible solution to detect underpromotions. In the case of the board, the player would have to manually replace the piece. A possible solution for this may be to have the board slide the pawn off the board and pick up a major piece from a predetermined slot at the side of the board to replace it. The stepper motors were also really loud and slow, but I sadly never got the chance to upgrade them since I had run out of budget. If you guys are interested in something like this, you should check out the Square Off board. They sell an automatic chess board that looks super cool and is definitely infinitely more polished than this thing I made.
What if you created and extra side of the board, so you put the captured pieces so in case of pawn getting to the other side what if the computer recognizes where it is, and moves the pawn to the extra side of the board and replaces it with one of the pieces it wants I.e queen, bishop, knight, rook. Does the computer recognize what pieces are what?
You could actually get self contained computer chessboards that did just that. I had some Ivan the Terrible board in 2006 or something that would castle twice.

it would be hilarious if the board had little trapdoors for every square so that the robot could open the trapdoor for a piece it wants to move, the piece falls down into the robot's grip, and then the robot opens another trapdoor and pops the piece on the target square. when the robot captures a piece, it opens the trapdoor for the captured piece and yeets it off the board before replacing it. that would be like wizard's chess lmao. the yeeting should be done in the direction of the opponent for maximum advantage.

what i think is happening is that the wires on the sides of the board are used as a coordinate grid
when a piece touches or stops touching the wire it gets detected and you can find the X and Y coordinate on the board
If you know the X and Y coordinates of a piece you can find out what piece moved by looking at what white piece stopped touching the grid and then set its coordinates to where it is now touching the grid
With this method you can keep track of the pieces of the board
A chess ai controlls the black pieces and since it uses a coordinate system the 'mover' can figure out where the piece is and move it to the desired location
there is a digital version of the board where the ai knows whats happening and it sends the signal to the mover to move a specific piece to a specific locatiln
My advice for future project is to make it with no mechanic part, removing sounds. You can use electro magnet where you can make the piece pseudo moving by changing specific metal into magnet below the board
