I saw them in Manchester (UK) last year in a medium venue of 2000 people and was near the very front .

@@keithbate9405 I saw them recently on night 2 of the Alexandra Palace gigs. I knew I liked them (a lot!) but seeing them live - I was just blown away! I managed to get in early and take up a spot in the second row fortunately. Matt is a brilliant front man too. I only wish now that I had bought tickets to both nights there.
@@zakamoriarty You did well to get near the front at such a huge venue. I have only ever seen one gig at the Ally Pally. That was the Stone Roses in 1989 , and the sound was awful and I was pretty much towards the back. Terrible gig ! in fact 1989 was the last year I went to large venue gigs. I also saw REM that year at the NEC and again I was a long way back. Not at all enjoyable. Since then have only attended medium venues and small club/pub venues.
I never expected to see the National live as they generally play the larger venues like the Ally Pally and festivals. So I was amazed that they played the 2000 capacity "The Depot " in, Manchester last year. The ticket price was only £42 including fees. Also that I was within a few feet of the stage with Matt pretty much right in front of me. Brilliant gig . My favourite since Thin White Rope in 1989.
Glad you enjoyed them . The National and PJ Harvey are my current favourite artists. With Polly's album being my favourite of the year so far. Haven't heard the second National album yet. But they played Two tracks from it on Jools Holland last Saturday. I thought "Space Invader" was superb.
@@keithbate9405 I saw REM in 1995. They were excellent but it was on the hottest day of the year in the middle of 1995. It was impossible to get any water after about 5pm or so. All the vendors had run out so it made things pretty uncomfortable! I was always a big REM fan. Polly went to school in the village about 2 miles from where I live, Beaminster! She received guitar lessons from Steve Knightley has a child. He also plays quite a lot, often in the Dorset area with ‘Show of Hands’. I’ve seen Polly in Bridport, my nearest town quite a few times over the years. She has quite a distinctive look! I love her track ‘We Float’ from her 2000 album ‘Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea’.

The latter part had me thinking they were running an EQ or compression on Matt's vocals. Props to him for using his voice like the instrument it is.
I think the second part of this song is a real exercise in 'let's see what we can do with the very bottom of Matt's range'
