      @@Kathy_Loves_PhysicsCan you please answer these 3 questions (thanks in advance):
      - What were and are the ramifications of Lorentz's symmetrization of the Heaviside equations in 1892, and the continuing symmetrization of these equations today as the "electrical engineering model"?
      - What powers an electrical circuit, or what actually powers the electrical power grid?
      - There is the "source charge problem" or "the problem of the association of the fields and potentials and their energy, with their source charges". The charge sits there and pours out observable EM energy in 3-space in all directions, with absolutely no observable EM energy input. Piece of cake to prove that experimentally, anytime, anywhere so it's well-known. Either this "most difficult problem in classical and quantum electrodynamics" must be solved, or else one has totally destroyed the conservation of energy law itself. This is a recognized formidable problem, but very much "swept under the rug" and never discussed in "polite circles". So the question is: how does the energy gets input to a source charge or a source dipole in the first place?

      @@Kathy_Loves_PhysicsI’m really enjoying your content and look forward to what’s coming next. While I purposely avoided Veritasium’s video, as well as Electroboom’s attempt at being cute with the topic, I find your take on the science behind all this electricity “stuff” much more educative and your energy when you present the topics is energizing… gives the desire to learn more. I think Tesla had a belief in the “skin effect” regarding the movement of current. In his presentation to the precursor to the IEEE in Philadelphia, when he lit himself up like a candle and explained that he could make it appear as if he was on fire, were he able to produce higher frequencies, he mentions that he knew the current would not harm him despite the high voltage because it travels outside the conductor. In this case himself. I think he explains it in more depth in the deposition for the Marconi trial if memory serves me right. Good read if you have the time.

    Kathy, I am a ham radio operator and former broadcast engineer. I believe it is the "dielectric" that is the medium where the energy is stored and travels within on a transmission line. I use a balanced line to feed my antenna in the shack. It is the space between the two parallel conductors that holds the energy and propagates it down the line from the transmitter to the antenna (load). Same is true in our grid. The only difference is that the grid is a vastly slower frequency of alternation.
    There is always inductance and capacitance in every wire and any flow creates eddy currents within, which force the flow to the surface of the wire where it encounters less resistance to the flow. The dielectric is the space between the conductors. That could be two parallel wires like in a lamp cord, or it could also be a much wider separation ie. between the high tension line and the Earth (neutral) below. It could also be the very small gap of space between atoms where the electric fields change position.
    We are taught the belief that electric current flows in a wire when we are in grade school, and that it behaves like water. This is where the problem starts.
    It isn't until the student gets to M.I.T. or other proper engineering university that it is made clear on a subatomic level that most of the books are outdated and incorrect.
    Just my $0.02
    Looking forward to your next video. They are always FANTASTIC!

      The problem occurs if the dielectric is the vacuum. That's when you start falling into the virtual particles and vacuum energy quagmire that can't be an aether..

    Dear Kathy. Do not forget Mr Poynting and his vector S = E x H ( the cross product of electric field and magnetic field ) that actually transport energy ( per time and area) and that is also what happens outside a wire that transport current. There is a magnetic field and there is also an electric field. And yes if you calculate like this you actually get the same result as you get by multiplying current in the wire with the voltage . So no contradiction. It works nicely transporting energy across a capacitor.

    • @JustNow42

      BTW the electric field at the surface of the wire is curved so that some power enters the wire, that is how the wire get warm from the current.

      Agreed. Her explanation of how energy "flows" from one coil to another in a transformer, is a non-explanation. Not mentioning the fields in that process is a dereliction of duty. Did she watch the Veritasium video?

    • @marcfruchtman9473
      @marcfruchtman9473 11 місяців тому +11

      @@astronomianova797 She says it quite clearly at 4:18. A changing current induces a current on the other coil via "induction". This is the "major" effect when discusses transformers. There are some capacitive effects but these are not as large in inductors. While Veritasium correctly points out Poynting Vectors and also highlights Transmission Theory, The Veritasium video is wrong on many levels regarding basic principles, which he simply negates as never being true, specifically the claim that electrons do not participate in electricity as well as the claim that electricity is not "in" the wire. People need to stop swapping cause and effect. The "cause" of electricity is a moving charge. For induction, You can have an changing magnetic field, but if it doesn't land on a charged particle of some kind, there is no "Electricity". Scientists have demonstrated this many times. For Induction, You need a changing magnetic field and a conductor (with free electrons = charged particle) to result in a current of some kind (or potential if the circuit is incomplete). You can also have electricity via accumulated charges that move. Or via movement of charge via chemical means... it always (AFAIK) requires a moving charge however.
      Veritasium is misconstruing small effects of Transmission Theory with the large effects of current flow due to charged particles. It is two different aspects. Transmission theory provides for very very weak transmission of electrical energy which is essentially severely weakened by the distance between two conductors. Electrons mediate electricity by their close proximity in a wire. As they move in the wire, current flows. We see this experimentally... when you disconnect a wire from a circuit in the house, the lights turn off. There is not a "continued" circuit that magically jumps the wires other than microvolts from Transmission Effect. Additionally, this effect is simply mediated by the same principles of charge and induction, just at a far greater distance. Most certainly, the electricity going from the Utility to the house and back, is 99.99% electron mediated. The rest of it may exist, but is too small to be useful for household appliances.

    Derek's video is pretty much correct. The energy in a circuit is transferred in the fields. This is clear from calculating the poynting vector field. The circuit is acting as a waveguide, and currents are just a consequence of the fields. It feels like currents are more important than they are bc that's what is easily measurable about a circuit.

    I cannot wait. You managed to hit 3 of my favorite things to talk about: where energy is at, the importance of the A field, and the displacement field! Where energy is at is a problem that comes up in almost all areas of physics and can be very confusing. This is also complicated by gauge invariance, in which different people will see a problem completely differently. One person may even see pure energy while another sees pure momentum. (They are of course related through the momentum-energy 4-vector). The vector potential is so wonderful in that almost every advanced theory depends on it and that pesky thing called gauge invariance. I have a feeling that we will disagree about the displacement field though. I understand that believing in aether caused researchers to go down the wrong path but it has the advantage of leading to some very cool results like the Maxwell stress tensor and why it is so similar to polarization current, it also gets rid of that annoying action at a distance thing. Anyway, sorry about this way too long rant. It just means that I am really excited to see your view on these things.

    Why is it that your videos, intended to bring physics to the masses, to me feels like a master's degree class! I am working on my travel schedule for the next year, trying to coordinate it so I don't miss any of your videos, having a hard time predicting their release. Serious though, you are headed for the Physics Hall of Fame. Keep it up, keep healthy, and don't worry a bit about my travel schedule. I can easily interrupt a visit to the ancient Mayan Ruins at Copan to correct to the internet and watch your video from there.

      My goodness, your plans sound fabulous. I wish I could help you with the scheduling but even I cannot coordinate it as they often take far longer than I was expecting. Remember that they stay on the internet, so have fun at Copan and maybe a new video will be waiting for you on your return! :)

    Another, more visual representation of current would be the analogy of a locomotive coupling to a train of freight cars. Each car only moves a small amount, but you can actually see the shock wave travelling through the train at a fairly high speed.

      This was used as an example of waves when I was a kid in UK. Fortunately or unfortunately the braking systems have changed so the wagons don't do this as much now.

      I was thinking the water analogy works well still-especially after Kathy reminded me of power alongside voltage and current. So then we get:
      • power analogous to the volume of water
      • current as the flow of water
      • voltage as the pressure of water
      • (resistance perhaps analogous to those sprinkler hoses with pinholes poked in them so that a regular hose is analogous to a superconductor of the water)
      A step transformer is like when I put my thumb over the end of the hose so that the pressure rises, the flow diminishes but the product of the two (the volume of water) remains constant
      I imagine this has been articulated before, but it seemed missing from the presentation in this video.

    • @crabby7668
      @crabby7668 11 місяців тому +1

      @@robburns1ne I would agree totally. For explaining the basic concepts these analogies work well for the complete layperson. It is the process of telling them to forget all this, it's just an analogy, when you have to explain further is where the problem starts😊
