More Bruce Lee training! This post explores what I think was key to Bruce Lee's amazing athleticism: his core stability. The one finger push up (or two finger) and the dragon flag are nothing if not demonstrations of this impressive rigidity. This allowed Bruce to deliver incredible power and speed in his strikes, and may even have contributed to his mobility and high kicks!
Whoever you are, you can stand to benefit from adding more core stability work to your own program.

You mean his core stability was the...core of his success. I'll see myself out after the video

when bruce was doing those martial arts moves, he is at a relaxed state. Just because his body looks tensed doenst mean he's actually tensed. To do those martial arts moves you cannot be tensed, you have to be initially relaxed. That's why in his Jeet Kun do book he tells us that during the punch movement, the hand and arm throughout the entire punch are relaxed and ONLY tensed and hardened at the last second before contact.

Very true! But core stability doesn't mean being constantly rigid - it means having the option of rigidity. As you rightly point out, this comes into play especially at the point of contact.

*please imagine me speaking this with a nerdy lisp*
Actually, to be technical, muscle tension is always constant, especially in resting position. Muscle tone, in terms of truth and not in terms of common understanding, is the rate of constant contractions while the muscle is in a rested position. Rigidity as Mr. Bioneer asserts, can be explained under this paradigm as a constant rate of high-to-maximal contraction rate, across all availably active muscle fibers.
I'm not saying one is false and the other is correct, but there's a conceptual distinction to be made that if done so, brings much benefit to the student of either Bruce Lee or of the modern functional athlete.

    • @mrzack888
      @mrzack888 2 роки тому +2

@@jamesbernards8409 it's not about the muscles. It's about the fascia and tendons. True atleticism is knowing when and how to relax the body right before the action. You see this with quarter backs and basketball players. They make throwing/shooting the ball so easy and effortlessly. Has nothing to do with muscles.

even arnold Schwarzenegger said that bruce lee's core was the basis of everything he did and it makes sense because without your core, you can't do anything. anything you do , your core is involved. walking, running, punching, picking a book up off the floor, carrying groceries, everything. i personally trained my core for years. thousands beyond thousands of reps for decades. even in bootcamp i highly trained my core and i remember one of the drill instructors say "you trying to get abs of steel?". this was in the 90's. now look at the fitness world? they all about the core. bruce lee was on target and he is the reason why i trained my core for all these years. because of a strong core , i was able to zercher lift an amount of weight that if i told you , i know for a fact that you will think i was full of it, but i did . i have used bruce lee's concepts a good portion of my life and i use them now on my journey in calisthenics. thank you sifu lee for your knowledge and unlocking one of the mysterious keys in search of "Real world power". Be like water my friends. be like water!!! 🤙🤙🤙🤙

It seems the more I learn about strength and power, the more I appreciate The Farmer's Carry. Grip strength relates to how much weight one can hold/move. Core stability relates to how much strength, speed, and power one can generate in exercises, sports, hobbies, martial arts, etc. The Farmer's Carry seems to do it all. The best thing about it, is the fact it can be done with any random weight, regardless if one is at a gym or, like now, at home. I think The Turkish Getup would also be one of the best exercises for best overall exercises too. Thoughts anyone? Other exercises that would belong on this exclusive list?

I have been putting more emphasis on unilateral movements lately myself! I train for athleticism, and it always made more sense to me to train unilaterally for real world carryover. Funny,
when i started focussing moreon my core to get some control over my Anterior Pelvic Tilt i noticed some positive changes mentioned by you. I do feel like i wanna go further now and see where this could get me. In Parkour, i felt like the maximus distance i could jump increased without focussing on my legs. And my Climb ups became much easier and faster what made me able to do the "level 4 climb up" last summer.
Core strengh does feel like the key to "everything" since then..

Bruce Lee's shorter stature and shorter stomach makes it easier for him to do the one handed pushup. Taller people's (models, basketball players) will find it harder due to their elongated structure. People with longer legs will have a slightly different form when doing various exercises. For example a squat, taller people have to have a wider knee angle when going down. Why is it the Best gymnasts are majority not over 6 feet tall?? It's much easier doing those moves. Different body types are suited better for different sports.

Yes. Morphology is incredibly important and needs to be taken into account when training. I wish I had paid a bit more attention to it when I first started lifting. It would have saved me a lot of pain (namely knee pain).

@@argh2945 training your foundation ground up (FEET first) and thus strengthening your entire body's fascia system to be more Glute dominant and efficient will help recover your knees. I used to have right knee pain, now it's all gone.

Yeah, I resolved the knee pain years ago. Strengthening feet was a part of (wearing zero drop shoes played a big role). Strengthening my core muscles also played a key role given that I have long legs and a short torso (strong core = less forward lean on squats).

This is not a sure thing but.. Bruce lee is using his other hand on his thigh. He is pressing down causing aided lift. It’s like pulling done on your arm while doing a one arm pull up.

Really loved this video. I am just curious about one thing. Although a stable core would allow for more specific output of limbs in the specific direction of the exercise and less wasted energy. Does momentum of the trunk or rotational force employed through twisting not also contribute to output of force for the limbs?

Great video, keep in mind Bruce Lee was only 5" 7" 137 pounds and had short legs like most women, that gave him aerobic advantages. By the way thin people and short people tend to live longer due to having better circulation, Bruce Lee strangly died at just 32.
