Sa is derived from Shadja which means 'giving birth to six'.
Re is derived from Rishabha which means ‘Great One’
Ga is derived from Gandhar which means ‘sweet fragrance’
Ma derived from Madhyama which means ‘being in the middle’
Pa is derived from Panchama which means ‘the fifth note’
Dha is derived from Dhaivata which means ‘sixth note/divine’
Ni is derived from Nishad which means an ‘seventh note’ also ‘setting at rest’, ‘esoteric doctrine’, ‘secret doctrine’, ‘mysterious or mystical’
Singing the Swaras has a positive effect on the body, mind and the consciousness. The swaras also effect our feelings and emotions.
The swaras are also associated with planets and colours

‘ga’ (gandharam) - Sun - golden colour
‘ma’ (madhyam) - Moon - white or yellowish tint

‘ni’ (nishadham) - Venus - multi colour Qualities of the Svara Shadja - Means 'father of the six svaras' and the one which gives birth to the other six svaras.
Rishab - Being the nearest to the Grâmni svara (Sa) it is strong as Vrishab (Bull).
Gandhâr Is associated with karunâ (sadness, longing).Madyam This svara is in the middle of the saptak.Pancham Is made up of the words panch (five) and mi (to measure). Is that note that is fifth from the Shadaj and is the tool to measure the svara intervals.
Dhaivat Is the overtone of the madyam svara and is heard by the Dhivân (sensitive minds).
Nishâd Is so called because the notes of the scale come to a close with it. The word is derived from Sanskrit root “ni+shâd” to come to a rest. Nishâd is full of karunâ (longing).

This is a song battle that happens because the funny guy in blue shirt turns the opponent singer (Kaithapram) against Mohanlal by spreading a rumour that Mohanlal made fun of Kaithapram's musical achievements (awards). So he walks over to the King's court to challenge Mohanlal. You can see him getting taken aback when he starts singing 'Shadjam' and understands what is going on. He ends up being very appreciative of the other's singing and blesses him before he leaves the court, humbled. Meanwhile, the blue-shirt guy sees that he has been exposed and sneaks out of there (towards the end of the song).
No actor in Malayalam movie has courage to move his lip for a song when sits infront of a legendary musician..It is not simple as we think.. Moreover he played role of a kadhakali artist infront of number of kadhakali experts in the movie called vanaprastham..Played role of a dancer in the movie kamaladalam with vineeth and monisha who are immensely talented in dancing..The fact is Mohanlal is not trained in any of the above..Pure 💎.. Kerala is lucky to possess him.

KJ Yesudas is a real carnatic singer. There is bass in the voice. So we can hear at any range in volume. I like his voice in tamil songs. I suggest Adisaya ragam tamil song from Aboorva raagangal in MS Viswanathan musical.

The song starts with Hindolam Raaga by Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri in the movie ) originally sung by Ravindran Master.
Then the song switches to Thoni Raaga by Mohanlal ( originally sung by Yesudas ).
Then the competition starts.
സ Sa ( note Sa in Western classical ) Shadjam. This version is sung in Panthuvarali Raaga. Mayoora Naadham. This stanza describes about Peacock's voice.
രി Ri Rishabham ( Western classical note Ri) Abhovi Raaga. This stanza describes about Lord Shiva's vehicle Nandi the bull).
After that there is a Chitha swaram in Mohana Raaga which switches from Ri to Ga.
ഗ Ga Gaandharam - Mohana Raaga. This stanza describes about Goat's voice.
Then there is a Chitha swaram to switch over from Mohana Raaga to Shanmughapriya Raaga.
മ Ma Madhyamam - Shanmughapriya Raaga. This stanza describes about Kroujam ( A particular Bird's voice ).
പ pa panchamam. Kalyani Raaga. This stanza describes about Kuil bird. (The Indian Cuckoo).
ദ da Daivadham. Kalyani Raaga. This stanza describes about Mandooka ( Frog's sound during rainy season).
നി Ni Nishadham. Chakravaagam Raaga. This stanza describes about Elephant's voice which is as sweet and monotonous like flowing Ganges river ( ganga pravaham).
Then comes Revathi Raaga to conclude the song with full pace after the last BGM.
Hindolam, Thoni, Panthuvarali, Abhovi, Mohanam, Shanmughapriya, Kalyani, Chakravaagam, Revathi. You may never find any Song which has been sung in so many Raagas.

Probably the weakest movie of sibi-lohithadas team (kireedam, bharatham, dasaradham, taniyavarthanam). Music was really great and Mohanlal in his prime was great to watch along with Nedumudi , mammukkoya, srinivasan and others.
Singer opposite was the lyricist of this song and his part was sung by Raveendran( music director) himself. MG Sreekumar sang a version, but didn't make it to the final version of the movie.
It's a series of movies exploring performing arts, be the carnatic music or be the classical dance by mohanlal's own production company.There are so many appearances by mohanlal as an artist.

Hey @TheJimmyCage, I would like to point out something. The version that you heard is sung by Yesudas (singing for Mohanlal), Raveendran, the music director himself (You mentioned MG Sreekumar), and Shareth. Raveendran is singing for Kaithrapram ( he is the lyricist of the song), the beard guy.
It is sung by K J Yesudas (for the role acted by Mohanlal), and Raveendran (the composer of the song himself) for the role acted by Kaithapram (who is also the lyricist of the song), and Sujith (for the role acted by Nedumudi Venu).

Here the purpose of the song in the film was a one on one with two singers who are the actors Mohanlal and Kaithapuram Damodaran Namboodiri who is also a great lyricist , poet , music director ,Screen writer etc. To give you a little context , kaithapuram is supposedly the pompous and prideful musician who is a favourite of the king, who got dissuaded by the tattle of Jagadish ( who you can identify from In Harihar Nagar Inn) that Mohanal is posing himself as the better musician to kaithapuram who is a seasoned musician. So he is here to challenge Mohanlal in a classical duel. Apparently if you are a spectator as well as an audience to the carnatic concerts , the concerts portrayed in films will always be a discontentment as well as discrediting too. For that I recommend you all to watch the carnatic concerts of Shri Yesudas to begin with. This is quite a masterpiece as far as the film portrayals are concerned yet if you view the real deal of concerts, this is nowhere near to it. Also films always give names to diversity of our innate cultures as differences and concretize them in the minds of populace. The pride and vexation of kaithapuram can be heard from the singing as it sounds boastful , adamant and fast paced. Also the humbleness and courteous manner of Mohanal can be heard from the tone of his singing as well. People are assuming that Hindustani music is a mellifluous cascade and carnatic is a haste of notes. As I have commented before, both Hindustani and Carnatic are absolutely the same in its classical and technical level. The only difference is with the language of the regions and the different instruments incorporated. Both are sung on diverse paces as well. Some foreign styles of Qawali which is mughal court style was added on as a style in Hindustani music , but in all its candour ,its indian classical music in its pure essence with only a little exterior modifications. So it's sheer ignorance when one says that Hindustani and carnatic are poles apart or rather is distinct from one another. Both are based on the Indian Raga system in its core and so not any different from one another. You might have noticed a portion in the song when both the singers sing in unison and there you can hear the spirituality of chanting as a practice out of temples. Its in the temples that the classical music and dance of India have originated and is an offering to the divine. You can only hear the original spiritual aspects of it from carnatic singing nowadays. Hindustani have gone a little wayward as a popular and commercial affair yet in its esse its no different than carnatic.
Once yesudas sang for music director Ouseppachan and music director asked him to make a manthra called OM in the most base that he could sing.
Yesudas sang it and the speakers got off due to his base voice.
That's our Celestial Singer Yesudas. No one to compete this man.. Now he is 84 still sings for devotional albums

As you have assumed, it is a song competition. They are testing whether the Mohanla's character can sing or not. Actor Jagadish the guy sitting behind found out that Mohanlal's disguised character, and challenges him to sing this song to prove himself. The man singing opposite Mohanlal is Kithapram Damodaran Namboothiri (the original lyricist of this song). He acted in this movie too with another name.
