One of the greatest songs to come out of the '70s IMO. I did my years in bands, and "Play That Funky Music" was one of those rare songs that I never, ever got tired of playing. Didn't matter if it was a wedding reception or a grungy dive bar; the audience ALWAYS got up and danced their asses off. Great times!
I agree! I was born in the '70s, but didn't get to hear a lot of it until I was grown. While not the best decade music-wise....some real clunkers....but NOT this one. This is a timeless classic.
@@Contra_1776 Very favorite? The 1980s. :) However.....however....every decade since Man first banged a drum or played any instrument....there have been awesome songs. :)
True story. About 10 years ago, my girlfiend (intentionally misspelled) and I were on a snorkel trip out of Lands End, Cabo San Lucas. Catamaran with about 50 people on it, probably half a dozen nationalities, hence half a different languages being spoken. They jam tunes out to the snorkel site. We get in the water, snorkel for about an hour then back on the boat for the booze cruise back to the marina. This song comes on and, I'm not kidding you, everyone on that boat, no matter what language they spoke, knew every word to this song and all 50 of us or so, rocked it out. Awesome! One of the coolest expereiences of a very well lived life - get out and do stuff people!
This is my happy song. Whenever my life is going off the rails, playing it loudly and repeatedly reminds me that all that really matters in life is the funk. Wild Cherry has kept me off drugs and out of prison for decades.
Love Looking Glass; Brandy! My mind was blown when I saw the video live performance. Lead singer Elliot Laurie was not what I envisioned. Thought he would be a big heavy set man.
Music brought us ALL together. I know people that don’t like dancing, but even they can’t help when their body begins to move to music like this. Some songs just take over your body and start it a movin’.

Very good song❤
I grew up in this generation, music has never been better. My children prefer 70s rock over any other.
its all digital pop trash that sounds the same now, all the real shit is underground like every art form these days, real and legit doesnt make money
Preach!! Music now will never live up to music from the 50s-80s, it’s the only stuff I listen to as a teenager😭😭
Wild Cherry had the Funk and showed it becoming #1 pop #1soul going Platinum 1976 graduated high School 1977
Right there with you, graduated ‘78. We listened to it all the time and danced to it in dance squad. Couldn’t get enough of it.
I’m convinced that this was just a really creative way to drop the f-bomb on the 1976 radio, I can’t hear that chorus any other way.
