People have no fucking patience these days. It takes time to research ANY non-fiction book, much more such an important historical series. Let’s see which of the moaners could even write one page of what he’s doing...ain’t happening. He should take as long as it takes and they can buy it when it does surface or buy something else of lesser and immediate availability.

He won’t finish this - He is not a writer really - he is a glorified researcher at best but struggles with writing - my take and prediction will be by mid 2025 there will be a co-author brought in to finish the books because he won’t able to. He is not a music theory or has any kind of chops in music theory - he will struggle to finish the most important aspect of the history which is the music theory- i wish him well - The Beatle recording sessions was a cut and paste job that is hardly even comprehensive - What we ask of Lewisohn is not to do this yourself - He is a fool for thinking he can do it all by himself working 15 hour days - that’s ridiculous -

Most of the 1st hand sources are dead. Neil aspinall was last one. Books will suffer due to that. Sadly. If you were 30 in 1963. You are nearly 90 now and most likely dead or feeble minded. Two surviving Beatles are worthless as sources conflicted memory

Correct, Mark Lewisohn is absolutely not "a music theory"; he is, rather, a successful author and an expert on The Beatles. And why do you think "music theory" is the most important aspect of the story of The Beatles? It sure wasn't important to THEM. They could not have cared less about plagal cadences or the like. In all likelihood, it's probably the DULLEST aspect of their story.

Lewishon is a true historian and reports the facts as evidenced by primary sources including the studio logs, notes, eyewitness accounts and actual contracts and documents. I can add something to this for those that are anxious that Mark is not going to deliver. I sat down with Mark and his wife in 2014, after he spoke at my aunt's funeral. I think the extended edition of the first volume of Tune-in had just come out. We didn't talk much about the Beatles, but we did talk a bit about life and death. He had been shocked to hear that my Dad had died suddenly the previous year (he had known my Mum from when they were kids), and it seemed to me like he had just had that moment where he thought "People do just drop dead at my age". I remember him saying words to the effect of "It has taken me ten years to write the first volume of this book, if I carry on at this rate I might not live to complete it", like the thought had not even occurred to him at that point. I got the impression that he was focused on bringing the project to completion within the spec of being the most comprehensive written work on the Beatles that will ever be made, and that he really felt a duty to do it. One thing I can tell you about this guy that people in my own family have told me - he is fastidious and methodical. He is going to do his absolutely best to deliver these books as he envisions them with minimum concessions to made to the reality of mortality. The driving motivation of these books is to leave absolutely nothing on the cutting room floor. If it doesn't happen because he gets sick or whatever, it will not happen, but he is not likely to deliver these books half baked. I think they will either arrive complete or as near to complete as possible, or they will not arrive.

Thank you for the great account of that conversation! I do believe Mark Lewisohn has all the strength, drive, determination, and duty to bring this in for a landing, health permitting. I've thought about losing him too and potentially not reading volumes 2 & 3. But I'm ok with that because his work on the first volume was so strong that I began to think differently about the Beatles; that the work could be continued in some ways with similar methods by others. He is leaving an extremely valuable legacy! Thanks again, Rob for sharing this.

I can somewhat understand the frustration. A lot of first generation Beatles fans are in their 70s and waiting a few more years that they may not even have can be frustrating. However, I have just begun reading volume one on audible and am blown away by the detail. So for myself as a third generation Beatles fan (born in 1997) I hope he takes as much time as possible to make as comprehensive of a book as he can.

I know I have the advantage of youth (I'm 28) for waiting, but even if I were much older, I would think we should not be so harsh towards Mark. He has dedicated a lot of love and time towards the first installment and it was fantastic. It had some very amazing revelations too that dispelled age old myths that are part of The Beatles lexicon. If the other volumes show the same care, these will be the most definitive work on The Beatles for all time excluding a time traveler stalking all four Beatles for their entire career.
Incidentally, I wonder if the next two installments will also have special 2-volume extended editions like Tune In?

What needs to be understood is the task he's taking on cannot be compared to someone who is recording an album, using their songwriting skills and their proficiency on their musical instruments to record and complete the process they have previously done several times. This project involves a tremendous of research that requires an unknown and unpredictable amount of time to gather, organize and begin writing something that might end up leading him to search for things he had no way of knowing would be required and cause additional searches for who knows how long. Give him credit for wanting and needing to be sure he will deliver a quality product.

But, we are closing in on the best volume, volume 2 of "Tune In." That is The Beatles at their supreme paramount pinnacle in my estimation, like when Hollywood got ahold of them for HELP! That was the classic Beatles look in my estimation. A bit more grown up, not mop-tops and not the psychedelic versions. This was their limit. I will buy Volume 2 immediately--that's the one I want. Why not release Chapter One, or at least part of it, in advance? Just put it on his website. I don't know - charge a dollar for it for charity. A bit of a teaser. A year later - put out Chapter 2 in the same way. Heck, just give us some footnotes, or some new facts - something interesting to tie us over. That way he might bet a bit less bothered. Hello Matt,
I was watching the "Yellow Submarine" "Special Features" portion of the DVD earlier tonight and frustratingly, under the heading "Behind The Scenes Photos" there are stills featured which were taken at the "All Together Now" Video shoot but no date is given!
John looks healthy and seems to have gained some weight.
There are a few other photos featured which were taken a few months earlier in November, 1967 at the TV Animation Studio in Soho, London.
Again, a couple of months later, the John Lennon at the May 14,1968 press conference is skinny, belligerent and acerbic chomping on his gum berating the reporters with flippant comments.
I believe John was doing Heroin and needed fix!

      Hello Matt,
I've found the date on the Yellow Submarine video insert of "All Together Now".
      The date was January 25,1968.
I got that date from "Elena The Beatles Photos"!
Elena uploaded fascinating stills taken at the video shoot!
Elena is from the Ukraine and I just don't know how she does it!
She's got an extensive archive of pics!
What throws me off though, is the fact that John is wearing long hair parted in the middle and "mutton chop" sideburns and Ringo is wearing a moustache during the "Yellow Submarine" insert shoot.
The following month, The Beatles were photographed recording "Lady Madonna" on February 3,1968 and now John has shorter hair parted to the right side still wearing the mutton chop sideburns, so John obviously got a haircut sometime after the "All Together Now" filmed insert.
I've always thought it was the other way around!
I've always believed that the February 3,1968 pic was first, and then The Beatles flew to India and when they returned in March,1968, they filmed the All Together Now insert! Whew!

Robert Caro fans are laughing at us Beatles fans. Caro has been writing about LBJ for 40 years and is much older than Mark but is always getting similar questions about his Vol. 5. Both are great biographers though and are doing very important historic work. They’re not writing for us, they’re writing for posterity. Take as much time as you need, Mark.

I'm sure I'll be long dead by the time this project is finished. I fault no one for that. It's just that great books and beautiful women are still being made and I can't participate. Sure, one can say the author should've gotten busy sooner, but, like Mark says, he began work on Vol. 1 and ten years later got done. That's dedication to detail which is missing or partially covered in other single volume books. I go now to rest on my laurels.

Volume 1 is great. No need to wait, if your an avid fan you'll be amazed at the depth and insights into the early years. For me, I was amazed at how they lived in squalor in Hamburg. All the cheap lousy guitars and amps they had, how they traveled cramped in a van from Liverpool to Hamburg. They didn't just fall to earth fully formed like it seemed to me in 1964.

Excuses for Mark having lots to write to finish volume 2 are running out as Ai ChatGpt and Grammarly are such a fantastic writers assistants now. So 2023 has gone and no book. Mark will run out of customers for his book as many of the hardcore fans are in their mid70’s and that age group all smoked and many did drugs etc so they’re dying off early. There are theories as to why no volume 2 book yet and why he has been writing volume 3 without releasing 2, I can understand the wait if the theories are true, but how xxx long???

The fact that people are harassing Lewisohn reminds me of George R R Martin and the fourth book in his "song of Fire and Ice" series. According to the New Yorker, Martin was getting death threats for taking so long. Uh, You are not going to get a book from a dead person. You can't force a project nor creativity. Mark Lewisohn is a conman in my opinion. He has been pussyfussing for years concerning the release of Volume 2, finding all sorts of feeble excuses (the lack of funds being one). He also claims to be scholalastic (which he most certainly is not). I read his Volume 1. Yes, his work abounds with a plethora of obscure and irrelevant details (the result of painstaking research, granted) but it is far from critical and analytical in the true tradition of scholarly discourse. He is essentially an archaelogist digging, unearthing and presenting.
His work is, in the final analysis, a lumping together of many personal and intimate minutiae (often vulgar and offensive) without interrogating these details to present a synthesis and objective assessment as the scholarly historian ought to. How far should the historian go in respecting the privacy of his subjects? I doubt whether the Beatles - Lennon in particular - would be very impressed. McCartney has also expressed reservations about Lewisohn's work.
I shall give Volume 2 (if it ever sees the light of day) a categorical miss. I shall spend the time, instead, listening to the music of my beloved band.

This is as dishonest as a review as I’ve seen. Your bias and use of terms like pussyfussing”, “irrelevant details” and dismissing a book you haven’t even read yet speaks volumes of the ax you have to grind. There are books out there you may like Goldman’s or Norman’s who actually do what you describe of your slanted take of Lewisohn’s work. Enjoy.

It's standard marketing practice to pre-promote but since there is such high demand, he is trying to quell those of us who don't like waiting 10 years. Let me guess, you're over 65.
