I still have a Miyake dress I purchased in a consignment store in the 1990s & it still looks good today. It's timeless. That was a great video. Would have loved to see his Tokyo exhibit wished it travelled abroad to other cities. He's one of a kind.

I remember discovering Issey Miyake in 1982 when American high fashion stores started to carry his line. Wilkes Bashford was the first to carry Miyake in SF, than the following year Macy’s started to carry Miyake. Wilkes window display was a neru collar men’s shirt with the side slit pocket opening. The pants had this long material of the same pants that was twisted around the waist twice.
I remember wanting to buy this inside out khaki pants and told a friend to watch them and when I came back 15 mins later, my friend was wondering around and not watching the pants and someone picked up and I couldn’t find. So I ended up buying this other pair that opened up and had a inverted pleat in the center of the leg. Thi is was 82/83 and I was only 18/19 years old.
In 1985, I did find a pair of Miyake men’s pants for like $7. and had a minor rip where the draw string hole was and a easy fix. They were like $160. pants that probably some rich guy didn’t have time to fix or return at a shop and donated. I was so thrilled finding em.

I had been wanting to buy a Pleats Please dress for some time now. I admired the pianist Mitsuko Uchida wearing his designs while performing here in 2019.
I kept looking at dresses for years and then finally last Thursday I purchased the maxi dress. I ordered it from England and I was nervous about it being the correct size and it getting here (USA) properly. It arrived today...it was such a bittersweet feeling, opening the package, having read this morning that he had passed away. Of course the dress is so beautiful and elegant. Rest in Peace, Mr. Miyake. He not only persevered after experiencing traumatic events early in life but blossomed and insisted on being positive and creating beauty and hope.

Always love Issey MIyake’s works, i first noticed his works way back when I was studying graphic design in ‘93, his pleats please materials and dresses were just astonishing back then and now almost 30 years later its still relevant. The man deserves a Nobel prize in Fashion Design if there is one!

    Some footage is very valuable.
His experience of war was new information as he dose not talk much about himself. His design has urban sophistication and geometric elements, but at the same time it feels gentle.
In addition, he is also very handsome himself.

This video is technically pretty janky (weird picture and audio cuts, music is mixed way too loud, etc) but the information is amazing. Issey Miyake was truly a genius! There's so much fluidity and joy in his work, you can't help but smile when viewing his shows.

I was hoping to see more of his earlier work. He is more than just pleated polyester. Which is nice, but, looking at his body of work, is commercial. His work from the early 80's was for me, magic, sculpture, walking art. He was very creative with cut, shape, texture, details, and of course fabric. Sometimes using materials that was not considered appropriate for fashion.

@@Fashionindustrybroadcast ....again...i became nostalgic....and grateful....watching your work on him......he just is a serious part of my life as a person who loves dance and fashion....there are several key people....and facts you left out...EIKO ISHIOKA....his ...hmmm...art director...and ....hmmm...instigator...who went on to create posters for the movie....APOCALYPSE NOW...and won the OSCAR....for her costumes for BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA...you also did not include MIYAKE'S MUSE....GRACE JONES...and his collaboration with her that launched her singing career...and her career as an all around WALKING SPECIAL EFFECT..you did include footage i see from the legendary show that launched her career called...ISSEY MIYAKE AND 12 BLACK GIRLS.....GRACE would close the show as the BRIDE....and she would sing her hit...I NEED A MAN...he still makes amazing things for her.....EIKO also designed clothes and sets for GRACE ....of course he also helped ....you know who....smile.....IMAN as she began her sterling career....i believe it was ART NEWS MAGAZINE that featured his BODY BRACELET as GRACE calls it on their cover....the 1st time a garment was ever considered a work for that magazine... ART....ISSEY'S collaboration with GENIUS of FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY....IRVING PENN was key....inasmuch as their work together in books was definitive to both of their careers....and idioms to be taken seriously as ART....and not just...APPLIED ART....his cologne L'EAU D'ISSEY POUR HOMME....is a CLASSIC MUST HAVE to African American men...and i JUST caught a bottle on sale for Father's Day...smile...again i cannot tell you what a thrill it was for me when he made sewing patterns of his work...I WENT MAD..i lived with 2 gentlemen who were fashion and costume designers....and we went INSANE buying and sewing and stretching the boundaries of the patterns...i usually wanted the garments to be longer in length...and bigger and longer sleeves...and bigger collars too.......my color palate became more restrained by that time too....a lot of black...white...cream...there was also quite a serious market back then of companies who copied his work...and the copies were actually quite good...i also owned one of his classic shirts that looked like body armor too....usually i wore it during summer....it was of course black...and i would rock it with white flat front form fitting trousers...while all the hot muscle guys were at circuit parties dancing shirtless....i would wear it and look like i had raided BATMAN'S CLOSET....everyone loved it.....and everyone knew his name when they asked who designed it...and they would gently touch it like a TOTEM...ISSEY has a duster coat pattern... VOGUE DESIGNER number 1476 i believe ....that is a standard for me...i rocked a million different fabrics...and permutations...but of course...basic black was the best....again...very BATMAN...i had it made HUGE and oversized and wore it to a Christmas party the year Tim Burton's BATMAN came out...GENIUS...the SUBTEXT to his work....is everything....and even though he does not talk about his life after...THE BOMB...i do remember him talking about how he was always trying to entertain his mother and make her smile as she writhed in pain from the exposure to the radiation from...THE BOMB...and how he always has a serious exploration of MOVEMENT and JOY in his work.....HE....is a UNIQUE BEING....TRULY SINGULAR...and QUITE SUPERIOR...and it really does appear EFFORTLESS WITH HIM...and he is transcendent of the trite stereotype of the TORTURED GENIUS...he is a GENIUS WHO HAS BEEN TORTURED...and we get to SEE....LIVE...and WEAR his REACTION TO IT....he is A MARVEL....

L’Odyssey, like A Space Odyssey. You don’t pronounce the ‘ in french. Not L’eau De Yssey. Otherwise this doco is excellent, you’d think its all bs the movement and functionality aspects of his work but it isn’t, trust me it is not. Every pieces of clothing I have from him, 1 pair of pants and 3 or 4 shirts are soo comfortable, truly a joy to wear. Only downside is its not for cold weather at all.

Please please, can doc makers have narrators who can pronounce their subjects’ names correctly and fluidly, though? Shouldn’t conveying accurate pronunciation to the viewer be as important as conveying the designer’s background and vision? This “izzy mee-YACKee ”is painful to the ear.
