Billy Joel is one of the real genius of the piano. He has done so much that you could listen to a couple a week and it would take a long time to get through. Take a history lesson with "We Didn't Start the Fire!"

I was a huge fan of Billy Joel (still am!) and he opened a concert with this and practically floored me with it! I hadn't heard it before and the energy from the stage was explosive! Billy Joel is Brilliant, and Brillant to see in concert! Hope you'll love as much of his work as I do!

"...and he'll go to his grave as an angry old man" is one of the lyrics I carried around in the back of my brain for years. Those words scared me, and certainly helped me to sober up in '88.

This guy is still one of my favorite singers/performers ever! (I was fortunate enough to see him in person last year and even after all this time, his voice is STILL amazing!) And yeah, it's amazing what he can do with a piano.
Please, PLEASE consider listening to "Downeaster Alexa". And another few great ones of his: "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", "Goodnight Saigon", "And So it Goes", "Leningrad"

Just saw Billy at MSG for his 70th birthday, he still can rock. He brought Peter Frampton on as a special guest. “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” is a classic as well. Bob Seger and Jackson Browne next please.....

One of many great Billy Joel epics to go along with "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant," "Captain Jack" and "Billy The Kid." I played in a Billy Joel tribute band, so I've performed (backing up our "Billy") most of his catalog. His big hits would take you 12 reaction episodes, and don't include his other "epics" like "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant," "Captain Jack" "Goodnight Saigon" *about Viet Nam) and "Billy The Kid." Other songs I think that you would like include "Vienna Waits For You," "I Go To Extremes," "Shameless" (which has been covered by a number of other artists), and "And So It Goes," a personal favorite and one of the saddest songs of the last several decades.
His lyrics touch people as they are real and heartfelt; songs about people, relationships, history and dealing with real life. You should get into him, even if you don't react to anymore of his material.

Bob Kessler good selections. I wasnt a huge of fan of the Innocent Man album, except the title song & This Night. But the early one’s & then even afterward I love. The Stranger is a perfect album. And I loved Stormfront, but he was always my fave artist til grunge hit! My son is named Layne after Layne Staley. But I see Billy annually since this show in ‘81 & am close to city to do so 😊

"Lullaby" is another of his songs that's worth a listen, especially if you need a good cry.
It's okay if you didn't catch the lyrics, he's one of those artists who, if you really like the music, you'll listen to many more times. His lyrics often have different interpretations throughout life as well, in twenty years a song you like now will have a whole new meaning. I haven't been fortunate enough to see him in concert, but I used to listen to an album of his Millennium concert, which opened with this same music. Phenomenal

i like any song that is well written, with skill and nuance (unlike 99% of todays music...of any genre), and Billy Joel has always been one of my favorite tunesmiths.
    btw

The 1st time I heard this song was in 1987 at a live concert in Houston, TX. The name of the venue was the Summit and they had the jumbotron focused on the keyboard as he played the Prelude part of the song and his hands were moving so fast, they were a blur on the screen, just like the video you played. I was floored, flabbergasted and flummoxed. It was the most incredible thing I had ever seen.

Had to come back and watch the smile creep up on your face as you watched certain segments. I didn't listen to his radio hits, many of which I could take or leave, because I have his albums. And you know that the radio never plays the epic pieces. This is mind-blowing, and I can't believe how many people say, "Gee, I didn't know he was that good on piano." Yes, because the radio won't play any of his best stuff, like "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, "Ballad of Billy the Kid," "Travelin' Prayer," "Root Beer Rag," or this. There are too many to mention, and all that the radio denizen know are "Uptown Girl," which Joel might've written with both hands tied behind his back, and "It's Rock 'n' Roll to Me." If you're curious, you don't have to react; just pull them up and take a listen; I think that sly Harrison Ford smile I saw creeping up will show up again. Love your channel, by the way; you're a good man.

Superb performer. If you ever get a chance to see him in concert he's amazing. When I saw him many years ago, he crawled up, and laid down on the grand piano on his stomach and played the keyboard from on top. That means he was playing the keys backward to how he would normally play them. Didn't miss a note.

BJ used Angry Young Man to kick off his concerts for many years. It was on Turnstiles in 1976. It sounded best with Liberty DeVito on drums!

That's why he's... The Piano Man.
Billy Joel. He's a homeboy, from one place I lived. entertaining, but he tries too hard at the lyrics sometimes. His songs were better when he just relaxed a bit more. Too long ago for me to remember what I was doing/etc. He likes to write about current events, issues, etc. Sometimes they are just issues from his neck of the woods. Sometimes they are just issues about his own life.

I'd like to see a reaction of Joe Jackson's "Stepping Out" and "Breaking Us In Two."
