How can this be lighter and pack considerably smaller than the Chelan equivalent without significant quality compromise?
Strikes me that this is reduced cost and quality packaged for marketing.

Good question! The technical construction used in Cirrus Ultralight models places an emphasis on light weight. The materials used for Cirrus Ultralight, called TPU or Thermoplastic Polyurethane, are approximately 1/10th the thickness of our premier PVC kayaks. TPU is extremely rugged stuff, and is much more resistant to scratches, tears and punctures than PVC, which is what allows us to use so much less material.
Cirrus Ultralight models have been laid up much like a carbon fiber construction, with added thickness and reinforcement where necessary, and less material where weight can be saved. The side tubes, for example, use a very light 2x laminated .13mm 70d skin. But the tubing is reinforced with additional framework to provide extra strength where necessary. The floor skin beneath the TPU dropstitch is where most folks are hardest on their boats, so that material is a burly 2x laminated .20mm 410d skin.
Careful testing has proven the Cirrus models to be similarly durable to our other boats. While the boat is quite stiff and durable, reasonable care should be taken to treat it as one would treat any other extremely light weight, high performance sporting goods product. These boats were never meant to replace our flagship models, only to offer a lighter, more easily portable version for a more technically oriented customer. Hope this helps - let us know if you have other questions.
