Why would Chevy think this is going to compete with the Raptor or TRX? Less power, smaller tires, and looks about like a regular Silverado.
as unfortunate as it is, general motors knows exactly what they did when building this truck. this truck isn’t meant to steal buyers away from the raptor and trx. it’s built entirely for one market, the chevy dude who refuses to switch brands. this truck didn’t costs gm anything to design, it’s all just recycled. meant for a single buyer, not meant to be a truck worth buying
The thing is, they KNOW they are still competing just because its a competitor by default. The "Chevy dude who refuses to switch brands" idea is going to just make this truck fail in comparison. Its price is literally on par with the other off-roader trucks too.

It really sucks being a GM guy right now, GM is totally abandoning enthusiasts (a market they've been known for since inception). The electric stuff is nice, but no one can afford it or really wants it. Camaro is a great platform, has wonderful driving dynamics and actually, a well-speced one has a nice interior (better if not on par with Mustang which no one realizes because all you see are 1LT 2.0T cars). No one would know that though because they are do busy marketing the boring XT5 (which has 0 style and is not even close to a GLE or comparable German car). The only GMs knocking it out of the park are C8 and full size SUVs ie. Escalade, Escalade V, Yukon, and Tahoe. The current Silverado update should have come out in 2019 when they got a redesign instead, we got a half assed interior that was both simultaneously uglier and lower quality than the previous one. 3 generation family and frankly none of their new products are resonating with me, suppose all the development money got dumped into Ultium.
It’s sucked being a gm guy since the mid 70s. Sure, the 3.8 and ls series had a good rn. But at least the new z06 is coming out. All you’ll have to do is pay 50% over whatever msrp is
Pretty much nailed it. I've owned three different generation Silverados, but lost all interest after 2019. Went to Ford and I honestly don't see myself going back. I feel that Ford listens to thier customers (mostly), and is innovative enough to take risks. Chevy gets uglier every year and late with innovative products.
Even though the marrow has said that the interior was a step up from the last generations and that's one of the main reasons the Tahoe and Suburbans have been praised Other than that you're right as hell
Here in Southern Wisconsin, brand loyalty still means a lot. There will be plenty of Chevy lovers in this area, and in the Midwest in general, who will plop down the bucks for the muscular ZR2.
I honestly feel like GM has just given up. Their trucks haven't been competitive with the Ford F-Series for over a decade now and even Ram with their most recent redesign in 2019 really stepped up their game and make GM's trucks look like a joke by comparison. Its strange to watch a company as big as GM just not really try with their bread and butter product.
A Pro-4x Titan and TRD Pro both cost around $10k less than this though. Like Doug said, this thing is priced closer to the Raptor and TRX, but features wise competes a class down from that. The price on the ZR-2 is baffling.
This is why i think i will order one of these. No other truck does this at 70K. The only Raptor I could find near me was 78K + 10K over sticker. A Raptor is not worth $88,000
The price is going to kill this truck. Having a front locker is amazing and its the only full size truck that has one. If the price was about 10k less like Doug said this truck could have some serious overland potential, especially if AEV gets involved like they did on the Colorado ZR2 Bison.
Doesn't the Ram Power Wagon also come with front and rear lockers to though? And I do agree that the price will be the demise of this truck. Its a 2/3rds Raptor at full Raptor price. People that are going to spend 70K - 90K on a lifestyle pickup will likely just get the Raptor or the TRX. I think the majority of this trucks sales will just go to the few die hard GM people that won't drive anything except a GM product but want something kind of close to a Raptor from the factory.
well considering that raptors will go over the sticker price due their high demand and the ZR2 probably under if sales are poor then it can quickly become a 10k difference and it will become much more tempting specialy for thoose v8 fans
Just remember, every trim level of 4x4 Ram 1500 has the same size tires as Chevy's "offroader." But it doesn't matter, these will sell like nuts because Full Size Truck people are insanely loyal to their brand, 90% of people who will buy this truck don't care how it compares to a raptor, they just care that it is a Chevy "offroad" truck.
Nope, the standard 18in wheel on Ram 1500's is a 32" tire. The 33's that they offer are only 33" because the wheels are 20"+ ...they are not good for offroading.
Just because it doesn't have fucking 50,000,000,000,000 horsepower and a widebody doesn't mean it's not an off-roader. You're completely disillusioned.
Not even close. This is basically the same upgrades the raptor gets over the f150. The trail boss is a cosmetic package. Suspension and the front locker are the major upgrades. Zr2 = legit
You mention the wide body look not being as cool, but I love the sleeker look and slight convenience you gain from the more standard shaped truck. Low profile but super capable, super cool!
Mr Doug. I love your videos. Truly, I do. I’ve watched you for years. But I just watched 6 ads within the first 4 minutes of this video. Hope that extra cheddar is going straight to you. No worries though. Thanks for all you and Noodle do for us!
If this truck sells well, I would not be surprised if the windfall money is reinvested in making something like what you're suggesting here. It would be the baha trophy truck that would effectively be a decent raptor and TRX fighter.
@@nathanmcdonald610 it should be pieced in between. More than a Raptor, less than a TRX. If they make a ZR2 SS with a supercharged 6.2 V8, making 600-650hp, it should be right in the middle.

@@peoplesambassadordm8279 No, I'm not talking about having a trailer hooked up. Just the hitch. If you own a truck to use it as a truck chances are you leave your ball hitch in full time. The step drops down so close to the hitch that you literally can't use it with a hitch in place.
I was honestly surprised the stock exhaust has such a nice V8 sound. Basically all Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon exhausts with this engine sound like vacuum cleaners from factory. Definitely better than the raptor in that sense.
Well than why review the Ferrari Enzo? The F40? The Chiron? 99.99999999999999999% of people will never enter one of those and own it. So, why review it?

If this truck had a wide body, another 2 inches of lift, 35’s, and an optional supercharged v8 with about 150 - 200HP more than the 6.2, it would be amazing!
Definitely a shame, Chevy took a loss in the off road suv segment with the Blazer not competing against the the Jeep or Bronco and again here in this segment losing to the Raptor and TRX.
@@drippgxd yeah I give them credit for the corvette and camaro but both Ford and Chrysler have excelled their too with the Mustang and Challenger/Charger, so Chevy is leaving money on the table by not competing to their fullest potential
You hit the nail on the head, Chevy needs a turnaround, the only cars they excel in are the new Corvette and the Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade Family in my opinion… although their regular trucks are getting better, especially with the latest update, but come on GM we need a REAL raptor competitor! Then an update to the Camero, and the a real off-roader like a Jeep Wrangler… then I could be proud of my brand…
Bigger wheels don't often mean better , the tires are more expensive, the wheels are more expensive , also offroad tires wear out fast on the road where, to be honest , most people will use this truck
Everytime I hear or see how gm misses the bar with new releases, it makes me feel like they aren't interested in the ice vehicle market. The fact that their combustion vehicles have, in general, been very tone deaf recently really solidifies to me how much effort they are putting into the electric market. Now they just need to show us what they've been doing for the last 10 years. Edit: I see you guys commenting that the hummer and silverado evs are underwhelming. Just because you don't like what they are doing, doesn't mean they aren't putting in effort there. My point is that, they have obviously shifted from investing in ice vehicles to focus on EVs
The Hummer EV is kind of cool, not going to lie and I say this is a die hard Ford man. But I was wholly unimpressed with the Silverado EV they debuted, it looks like an oversized Honda Ridgeline with Chevy badges.
I mean they have the corvette and that’s the only good car they have. Idk why people never heard of the corvette. The C8 Z06 is already a masterpiece if you tell me
I live in a ranch in Mexico but i got a house in the US and with couple months working out there i can buy one down here for half the price. Who knows about the quality, mexico tens to cut corners. Will never beat my 86 k5 though, them sqaure bodys are solid!
I actually saw one of these on the road today and I was actually curious why someone would buy it. I agree when you say the Raptor, over the past 10 years has made a name for itself. When you think of an off road pickup, you think Raptor, not even TRX (not yet at least) I just don’t understand why GM seems so hesitant to build a strong Raptor competitor, or an off road vehicle in general, honestly. They’ve missed the mark several times with the Silverado, they really missed it with the Blazer and Trail Blazer. That demand clearly exists, they’re just scared to get on board.
Funfact, the bumper endcap is not just for replacement, you can remove them when RockCrawling and that allows you to attack large rocks with your wheel instead of your bumper
They don't need to, they'll have a waiting list for these just because of brand loyalty, and every Chevy bro will argue with anyone who will give them the time of day that it is better than a Raptor or TRX
At that price point, I want the long travel suspension and wide bodywork that the Raptor has, even the base TRX is starting at around $75,000, and like the Raptor comes with the "Super Truck" Baja type hardware. This truck is just a warmed over Trail Boss. The reason why it's so expensive is that the Trail Boss has been priced so high and there was no way they could lower the price too much on this ZR2.
Oh wow. That Marauder. Nice! After your Town Car review I was wondering if (or when) you were gonna get another Panther in there, and boy howdy am I glad you found a clean one to film!
For that price tag I’m pretty sure I’d go for the Raptor instead, simply cause of the beefcake look. The ZR2 Silverado is neat but doesn’t exactly stand out from the rest of the Silverado pack. I’m curious if they corrected that lifter problem that was plaguing these GM engines.
The Active Fuel Management(AFM) is an option on some models, the lifter issue is still there but have been updated, as a GM tech working at GMC and Chevrolet I haven’t really had and ZR2s come in other than maintenance and recalls for the DRL which is Just a BCM update which takes 15-20min to do
Hopefully they're making an actual raptor/TRX competitor with the supercharged 6.2 that's in the CT5-V/Escalade-V, with a wider body and more aggressive wheels and tires along with it, it would actually make a really cool truck
If living near the GM Assembly Plant showed me anything it's that this truck probably sat in a muddy field next to a bunch of other ones for months on end with no chips. Funny how GM will charge a absolute premium for vehicles that to them are perfectly fine being shoved in a cornfield straight from the factory and after months of sitting in they finally get to a dealer, just to get marked up 5-10k anyway lmao
Not a lot. They made the 6.2 extremely hard to program. The 6.2L in that truck has been in the Silverados and sierras since 2019 and hardly anyone has modded them.
New sub here and I’ve watched so many repetitive reviews on the zr2, but yours is by far the most “normal” non boot licking and down to earth review I’ve seen so far.
22:06. Thats the difference between a v8 and a v6. Raptor missed hugely by not offering v8 until the raptor r that will be 110k and probably 150k after markups.
That's really the one and only area the ZR2 outshines the Raptor is that the ZR2 sounds better when you drive spiritedly, but the Raptors performance is still better across the board. I do wish Ford had offered the 5.0L Coyote V8 as an option in the regular Raptors. The Raptor R will likely cost a boatload more money just for its exotic engine alone but then you add dealer markups like they are doing these days and it'll cost as much as an entry level supercar.
@@joelk9182 No doubt the raptor is much better truck. But this truck is intriguing because its like a gen 1 raptor but with a nice interior. I love gen 1s with 6.2s.
This truck appears to be a rival to the F150 Tremor and the Ram Warlock and Rebel... however with that pricetag, its a disappointment... I have a Ram Warlock that I am paying a total of $59xxx, fully loaded.. youd be silly to buy the Silverado
Well and really, they already had that competitor in the Trail Boss, it was there to compete with the Rebel and Tremor. This should be trying to compete with the Raptor and the TRX. Isn't the Warlock just the old RAM?
I'd take a F150 Tremor over this any day, especially considering the pricing haha. It seems the positioned as TRX/Raptor competitor but missed the mark
@@Wark_91L yea, it seems Chev have just done a Trail Boss Pt2.. The Warlock is a 4th gen Ram, with Rebel cosmetics and a similar off-road package to the Trail Boss... I chose Warlock because I prefer last gen ram design over this one
I cant lie, I still love it. Being an automotive engineer, I still dont trust the ecoboost engines. Chevy V8s are tried and true (relatively) and it's much cheaper than the TRX.
@@QBDLettuce I'll be waiting for those Toyota dudes to shout Toyota ten million times, and bring up their 4Runners' reliability and its four billion miles.
@@QBDLettuce I'm not talking about every other car brand. Dude said Chevy V8 is tried and true...which is far from the truth now, that GM over complicated a once tried and true pushrod V8 to get 1 mpg better in a fictional EPA test that no one replicates in the real world.. So stupid of them.
I don’t think this was made to directly compete with the Raptor and TRX. This ZR2 stands as a middle ground. It has off-roading goodies yet can still be used for truck stuff. It maintains a payload of 1,500 lbs and can tow almost 9,000 lbs. The Raptor on the other hand only has a payload of 1,000 lbs and can tow only around 7,000 lbs. I feel the ZR2 is the all around better deal.
Chevy made an off road truck for the city, which is what 80%-90% of Raptor and TRX drivers do, you see them clean on the freeways, targets and walmarts. The only downside is the price, should be $10000 less like Doug mentions
We keep them clean because we like our trucks to look good and last. Why would I want to sling mud and rocks off my truck on the highway? That's an idiotic take.
The only people who think these never go off-road are people who never go off-road themselves. There are a million idiots out there breaking their sh!t thinking their stock Raptor is a rock crawler.
Nah, it still looks like a Silverado with Autozone parts. Raptor looks like F-150 with A LOT OF AutoZone MODS. TRX is a Ram with Autozone parts but with Hellcat. Chevy needs to step up their Autozone game or bolt a blower on.
If Chevy wanted to go against Raptor and TRX,the smart thing to do would have been to resurrect the AVALANCHE and put these features on it...plus the name sounds cooler.
The ZXR2 is not A raptor. However, since a similarly equipped Raptor is 75+K and most Raptors are selling 10K or more over sticker, the real market difference right now is 15K minimum. That's what makes this truck interesting in todays current market. This truck's true competitors are the Tundra TRD pro, Ford Tremor, GMC AT4X and the Ram Rebel.
Based on the specs (HP, torque, ground clearance, tires, etc.), this almost competes more with the F150 Tremor...except the Tremor starts at $20k less than the ZR2...
Build a Tremor with all the options and it is around 68-70K. I'm having a hard time deciding between this and the Tremor and Ram Rebel which are all around 68-70 K loaded. The Chevy ZR2 is the only one that comes with a front locking diff
For most actual offroading in narrower trails and not mall crawling, not having the wide body is an advantage (especially here in colorado). This truck is setup more for crawling / overlanding and not baja racing. At 70k, it is basically fully loaded where as the Raptor and TRX would be at least 10-30k more when equipped similarly. I just wish it had the diesel as an option.
Trail Boss is a cool and unique name. They should have introduced the ZR2 to replace the trail boss, and overhauled the trail Boss to be a more serious raptor competitor
My brother has a friend who is a avid fisherman and he had been pulling his bass boat with a Chevy with a 6.2. He needed a new truck and went with the Ford with the boosted V6 that had better power numbers than his Chevy had. The problem is that when he pulled his boat the Ford got between 5 to 10 mpg worse than the Chevy did and it seemed to struggle to pull his boat where the Chevy acted like it wasn't pulling anything. I think that this is where the boosted V6s are aren't going to match up to an old school V8.
I’d choose this over a Raptor hands down. Cheaper, much easier to daily drive, V8 muscle, and quite good tech. Plus it’ll tow much better and will do more than enough off road for the average person.
Good review as always....But going forward you tell us everything in detail, Except audio quality..this has always been one of my most important buying decisions, since the end of DIY double DiN stereo upgrade..
I would check out Savagegeese on UA-cam if this is important to you. He includes audio engineer reviews on the sounds systems of most of the vehicles he tests.
@@dswallrich Yeah I feel like to give any meaningful review of an audio system, you have to go into professional measuring and technical detail like Savagegeese does. Just saying “it sounds good” is useless. Doug is definitely a casual reviewer though, not a technical one. His reviews are shallowly researched, he frequently gets technical details wrong and his “Doug scores” don’t actually make much sense. Of course that’s not necessarily bad. Doug’s stuff is still entertaining. But if you want more technical reviews, you’re gonna have to look elsewhere.
One major selling point for the ZR2 over the Raptor/TRX…. It’s a Dad-truck for dads that do more dadding than off-roading, or posing as non-dad off roaders. So I love you can use the GD thing as a practical freakin truck and go camping or whatever as well without worry. Being able to comfortably use the (full size) bed for mulch or bikes or appliances or whatever is really a huge selling point. Probably fits in most garages too; which is nice ;)
Fully kitted it's $10k less than a specc'ed out raptor, plus you get a proper V8. Slightly better towing and payload, better interior (imo), better utility in general (also imo), similar mpg. I much prefer this to a raptor or even a trx. Plus you can actually get one of these with the chip shortage. This is a better fit for the hauling, long drives, and mudding that I do.
I never understood these full sized offroad trucks because they make so many compromises like towing and payload, MPG, handling on road, etc. When they are not really good at offroading and now are not nearly as good on road where they will be used most. I think they are more of a status symbol because you would be way better off saving 20-30k and buying a side by side and a trailer.
I like it honestly. Doesn’t look as good as the new raptor. But it’s definitely nicer then the vanilla regular f150s. The nicest part is the new interior.
ZR2 just filling in the gap b/w Raptors and Tremor/Rebel/Trail Boss. Like Doug mentioned, the real transaction after options selected and discount applied probably will be at least 10k cheaper than a Raptor with similar options. That being said, for my usage, probably still better to get a Rebel as it's more luxurious and better on road with decent off-road abilities, and probably cheaper too. Though I do prefer ZR2 look over Ram and Ford.
Doug, can you please give an extra 0.5s for your "THIS" opener? It's iconic, I love to hear it, and UA-cam often clips it when starting to play the video

Doug's reviews of "normal" vehicles that most of us can afford are so much more enjoyable than his videos of unreliable overpriced garage queen exotics.
Chevy is really missing the mark on almost every level of their brand. So disappointed when I thought they would actually try to compete with ford and ram. But yet again why would Chevy want to compete?
I will say that the Chevy V8 naturally aspirated will probably outlast a turboed 6 cyl...especially if you're doing any stressful crawling or towing. I consider the engine in the Chevy superior, even if technically less HP than the Ford.
Except the fact that the Chevy engines are now failing at a 5-10% rate right now due to the active fuel management system. Leads to bent push rods. The engine you consider superior is currently the least reliable truck motor on the market. GM ruined these engines in the name of emissions and fuel economy.
@@97justinparadis Yup. The cylinder deactivation system GM uses has to be eliminated immediately if an owner wants to get 150k out of it. Hopefully this ZR2 version doesn't have AFM at least.

The only way Chevy can be okay with producing this, is shooting for more of a Pro-4X / TRD Pro type customer and not a Raptor/TRX customer.
A Pro-4x Titan and TRD Pro both cost around $10k less than this though. Like Doug said, this thing is priced closer to the Raptor and TRX, but features wise competes a class down from that. The price on the ZR-2 is baffling.

I’d buy the ZR2 for its electronic locking front and rear axles over any of the other features. Off Roading lockers are a game changer.
This is why i think i will order one of these. No other truck does this at 70K. The only Raptor I could find near me was 78K + 10K over sticker. A Raptor is not worth $88,000
I like the look and the capabilities as a daily hauler than the Raptor or TRX. That'd be why I'd buy this truck.
@UCdOTEyno61n9ygC65xj5n6g It does, when I say "full size" I am referring to 1500's.
Buy it used then, it wont hold value as good as the raptor
well considering that raptors will go over the sticker price due their high demand and the ZR2 probably under if sales are poor then it can quickly become a 10k difference and it will become much more tempting specialy for thoose v8 fans

Just remember, every trim level of 4x4 Ram 1500 has the same size tires as Chevy's "offroader." What I thought
What are the odds they come out with an actual competitor to Ram and Raptor. Call it the ZR2-SS. That would make too much sense. They’ll never do it.
They don't need to, they'll have a waiting list for these just because of brand loyalty, and every Chevy bro will argue with anyone who will give them the time of day that it is better than a Raptor or TRX
And they're so late. People who want a truck like that are probably happy with their TRX/Raptor
They would need more than an engine upgrade. This truck isn't in the same class as the Raptor or TRX.
@Dimetri777 I'm not saying they wouldn't, but at least they have a leg to stand on. This thing is a joke compared to a Raptor or TRX

We keep them clean because we like our trucks to look good and last. Why would I want to sling mud and rocks off my truck on the highway? That's an idiotic take.

I'm a tundra dude, but the interior of this chevy beats any other manufacturers on the market. Beautifully designed!
The ZXR2 is not A raptor. However, since a similarly equipped Raptor is 75+K and most Raptors are selling 10K or more over sticker, the real market difference right now is 15K minimum.
Doug is the type of guy who shows a score of 59 and calls it 60

Love the truck content!
This trucks biggest disadvantage is the badge on the front of it.

The truth is these “off-road” full sized pickup trucks really aren’t good off-road. They are just too big.
Gonna crawl over them curbs in the mall parking lot like a boss tho
I never understood these full sized offroad trucks because they make so many compromises like towing and payload, MPG, handling on road, etc. When they are not really good at offroading and now are not nearly as good on road where they will be used most. I think they are more of a status symbol because you would be way better off saving 20-30k and buying a side by side and a trailer.

All the tech Doug praised is in other silverado too (above LT trim). So what I suggest is buying a rst, lift it up. And you pretty much have a zr2.
ZR2 is more like a Tremor than a Raptor.
Unfortunately it's priced like a Raptor. About $70k without dealer markups.
They should call it a Tremble
Dang, I love Chevy but they missed the opportunity to call it the "Chevy Silverado Meteor"
More like space turd.
I doubt Chevy is cool enough for that.
I'm a Muslim, and we're in Ramadan; which is a month that we fast through the whole month. When i have my meal after my fasting, i love watching Doug's videos while eating.. I don't know why, but it's so heart warming everytime( I am not a car person though) 🙂❤️
Whisper: I don't have a car too.
There’s something really comforting about Doug’s videos. I consider myself a car guy but it’s more than that for me his uploads are a “coping skill”. Also he just seems like the nicest dude.
-Peace be with you friend :)
@13:02, loving the Lincoln Mark LT.
Don't forget that cars and bids was also the first auction site entrusted to list a Rivian r1t anywhere in the nation. Take that bring a trailer!
Don't worry. Joey will bail them out again.
And it pisses me off. Phuck bro!!!
Imagine you never heard of the corvette. That’s the car people always single out when they make comments like this
@@drippgxd yes Chevy is doing good with the vette. But almost every other car in the lineup has not been up to par. Blazer is exhibit A
@@loganwynstra9115 yeah I gotta say Mustang > Camaro anyday. People who drive Camaro are soyboys
I will say that the Chevy V8 naturally aspirated will probably outlast a turboed 6 cyl...especially if you're doing any stressful crawling or towing. I consider the engine in the Chevy superior, even if technically less HP than the Ford.
Yea but then there’s the Ram TRX with its mighty supercharged V8
Except the fact that the Chevy engines are now failing at a 5-10% rate right now due to the active fuel management system. Leads to bent push rods. The engine you consider superior is currently the least reliable truck motor on the market. GM ruined these engines in the name of emissions and fuel economy.
@@97justinparadis Yup. The cylinder deactivation system GM uses has to be eliminated immediately if an owner wants to get 150k out of it. Hopefully this ZR2 version doesn't have AFM at least.
@@97justinparadis I thought they eliminated that feature already, or at least gave the owner the ability to deactivate it. Cylinder deactivation is not in the Camaros, which I'm basing my opinion of the motor on...
Okay after watching his cars and bids ad standing in front of a crown vic...is Doug finally gonna review a crown vic??? I'm SO EXCITED
That's actually a Mercury Marauder, not a Ford Crown Vic.
I know it's a Marauder because of its distinctive wheels.
I can't be the only one who wants a video on that Mitsuoka you showed in the cars and bids ad.
