You are fantastic! I stumbled upon your page while seeking information for online curriculums for my new to-homeschooling sons and me. Thank you for your insight and phenomenal approach toward making a concern into something much more relatable and hopeful.

Fantastic video! I’m having trouble with my kids school. When the teachers say “could you please sit down” my son is really considered if he wants to sit down. If the teavher says he you will get 3 warnings before you go to time out. He thinks he has 3 changes to do something. We went to a kids show with pirates. My son went in to a discussion with the pirate actor about piracy. He said pirates are sea robbers so why are we celebrating this. With Christmas we stopped with talking about santa and just had to tell truth as it becameto much for him. My son is 6 btw.

I am sorry you are having trouble with your son's school. I have found many times as a teacher that I will be polite and say "could you please" when I really need to say "I need you to....(do whatever)". It would be a lot more helpful. I have to do that for my daughter. Just tell her what I need so she isn't second guessing or thinking she doesn't have to, etc. I hope you can keep find ways moving forward.

Try being 50 before you realize you are a literal thinker.
As a teenager I just came off as naive.
And for a many years the greeting “Hi how are you?” Threw me off and I would hesitate to process in my mind: Do they mean mentally, physically, emotionally? Why are they asking? Finally a friend explained to me it’s just a greeting.
It has made making connection with people hard because I am analyzing the meaning of what they are saying and I give a blunt answer.

You are heaven-sent! *This is going to be kinda long*
I live with someone who we’re finding out has always had signs of being on the spectrum. Needless to say, their literal thinking has had a severe impact on our relationship. Convos like this lead to huge arguments:
Her: Why is the sky blue
    Me: It reflects the ocean
    Her: what?
    Me: it’s reflecting the ocean
    Her: that doesn’t make sense
Me: Well, that’s the truth. What do you want me to say?
Her: I don’t get it. Why can't you just break it down for me in a way that I can understand?
Me: What are you not getting? It’s just mirroring the ocean? There's literally no other way to break that down. Are you really upset with me right now?
Her: Oh! It’s mirroring the ocean? Why didn’t you just say that
    Me: I did. . .
Her: NO! You said it’s reflecting the ocean, you never said it was mirroring it.
Sometimes it can even be her asking me for advice, then ignoring what I tell her just to be told THE EXACT thing and her coming back saying what she was just told by someone else as if I didn’t just say that🤦🏾‍♂‍. Pisses me off. However, the more I learn about autism, the more people like you come u in my recommendation videos to explain these things that plagued our relationship and I’m extremely appreciative. We’re both in our mid-20s and NOW finding out about the signs of autism that’s been there her entire life! Entire school systems missed this and her parent’s own misguided stigma on autism deterred them from having her evaluated young.
My question to you is, what do you suggest we do to grow? Obviously, it’s one thing to understand literal thinking but the world will not accommodate for our lack of control over something that we were born with and were unaware of until 24 years. That's just reality.
Any help or guidance would be phenomenal. Either way, this video has done so much to help us understand her and why she gets visibly upset when things are not said to her verbatim to her personal understanding.
    Thanks in advance!

I disagree about that not all autistics are literal thinkers. They are. Its default. It's just some of us can learn to recognize figurative and implied language. Literal and logical is still the default and there can be a delay. I'm like this. I can sometimes catch figurative/literal, but i say what i mean; I'm literal

Great explanation, especially with examples of how literal thinkers process verbal communication which has double meanings. But the way you explain it ( beyond your verbal explanation ) implies that you view it as an illness at worst. On that basis a dislike.
