Messi wanted to leave last year cause FC Barcelona's president was terrible, but with the new president things got better and he decided to stay, the club wanted as well, he even agreed to lower his salary to stay, but FC Barcelona is in terrible financial situation, and La Liga (Spanish League) has a financial law that won't let Barcelona have Messi (and maybe other players) cause of how much he costs. Is really sad, nobody wanted Messi out, he just had to leave. Yes, the people in the audience were other Barcelona playes, some of whom he played for his entire life (like Busquets and Piqué). Besides press and board people and his family.
He offered to cut his salary half but even that was not low enough to fulfill La Liga's financial rules. In fact, even if he would have played for free next season, the rest of the team is so expensive and Barcelona's finances are such a deep mess that even that would not have met La Liga's requirements. Part of the truth is also that Messi's excessive contracts in the past play a huge role of the financial disaster Barcelona is in nowadays and that Barcelona's team was way too expensive and way beyond Barcelona's actual revenues since a couple of years already. Bad management can turn even biggest clubs in a mess. And the other Spanish legendary club is facing the exact same problem...
I mean, couldn't Messi play on a minimum contract if he wanted? I don't know how salaries work in LaLiga or any other European league but here in the states in the NBA, NFL etc there are minimum contracts you could sign for like $1-$2 million a year and stay at your team if you wanted. It's not like Messi hasn't made the equivalent of hundreds of millions of dollars from the team not to mention his endorsements which have likely made him tens of millions, maybe even over a hundred million. If it meant so much, and for you family and kids, why not take a pay cut and stay? That is of course it is ok by the league rules. Also, I'm assuming the players aren't unionized like US sports players are. In the US our players unions go through collective bargaining with their league about every decade or so and come up with revenue sharing agreements, salaries, free agency etc which is why there is a league minimum salary which is based on years of experience and the portion of revenue sharing going to the players. In the NBA the players get 51% of the league's revenue. Anyway, like I said, I don't know anything about the finances of European leagues but I'd love to hear about it.
@@Jon.A.Scholt I don't know a lot of the financial rules either, but I read that even if Messi played for free next season, Barça still can't subscribe him, they have to sell players yet (but nobody is buying). That's the hole they're in.

If you're interested in knowing about his life there's a documentary style film from 2014 "Messi The Movie". Difficult job for the interpreter, but he got it quite right. Messi has such a strong accent from his own city, it's like a kind of a Boston accent, he doesn't pronounce any s at the end of words , etc. Is even difficult from someone from the same city. He never got the accent from Barcelona, some words perhaps but that's it.
That's the La Plata accent, spoken by those who live in Buenos Aires, Rosario (born place of Messi) and also in Uruguay. It's a little combination between italian and spanish
I don't know about the present relationship but when Messi's contract expired Barca couldn't renew it due to Financial Fairplay rules of the Spanish league. According to these rules no club can spend more than 70 per cent on turnover on wages. Because of the mismanagement of the previous president, Barcelona were spending 110 per cent. A 50 per cent reduction of Messi's wages, which he offered the club, would only bring them to 95 per cent. So barring selling 17 other players, there was no way they could keep Messi.

I will always root for Barça, and I will always root for Messi, even if they’re facing each other. A very sad situation, and even though he gains a lot from this move, he is still handling it with class and respect.
His first contract was with barcelona it got signed on a napkin inside a restaurant because it was the closest paper nearby, this was when he was 13 and the other manager didn't want to sign him then cause he was to young but the other vicemanager or something signed him anyway because he knew messi was a one of a kind player and we might never see one like him again
Messi won his first international trophy with argentina last month. That was one of the biggest criticisms of him, for never having won a trophy with his country. Could you react to Lionel Messi against all odds, please?
He is gone to Paris Saint Germain (French football club based in Paris) and more importantly, besides the club raised him and his name, one of his ancestors was Catalan and exactly from Barcelona and that's why i think he was feeling really convenient in Barcelona even though he is half Italian.
If you’re interested in the reaction of Barcelona’s fans to Messi’s departure it would probably also be worth looking at the scenes of his arrival at PSG.
At Barcelona, there's a Musium for Messi documenting everything about him and only him. From his childhood, achievements to the player he is now. The true 🐐.

Also i would recommend a doku from netflix, i will look up how it was called. it is about what psychologists did research, how most of the goats in diffrent sports have traumas from their childhood which pushed them to greatness, two of the exemples they use are messi and ronaldo.
SoGal - wow, it's always great to find someone new to the world of soccer, and my goodness, a woman too! I LOVE your reactions. There is something you really need to know about soccer in the UK, and that's the FA Cup, the national knockout competition, usually competed in the final like the big clubs from London, Manchester, Liverpool - but did you know this tournament was open to over 700 teams who compete in knockout stages to progress and potentially play against bigger and bigger teams, the further they progress... In England we actually have TEN tiers of professional /semi=professional football. The top 5 (national) tiers have one division each and then below that leagues are increasingly regionalized in a pyramid system of 2-4-8-16-16 leagues at each step. That makes a total of 48 leagues with relegation and promotion between each tier every season... Now, this may surprise you. EVERY team in the top 9 tiers of English football gets to compete in the FA Cup each season. This season there will be 737 teams taking part. The first (extra-preliminary) round of this season's Cup was held this week Small teams like Staveley Miners Welfare, Punjab United, Cray Valley Paper Mills and Hashtag United (some may have average crowds of less than 100) have the chance to progress and play bigger and bigger clubs in each round. There are actually eight rounds before the Premier League teams join in at the 3rd Round Proper. In 2016-2017 Lincoln City, then playing at Step 5 actually reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup before losing to Arsenal 0-5. The greatest ever mis-match was just last season when a team called Marine, who played in the Northern Premier League One West (tier 8, average crowd of just over 400) won their way through seven rounds and were rewarded with a 3rd Round tie at HOME to Jose Mourinho's Tottenham. There is a really good video explaining the FA Cup format (from an American perspective) which may be worth viewing ua-cam.com/video/puwvbXMNjzw/v-deo.html
I think the only issue with just watching this video is you don't have the overall context on why he was forced to leave Barcelona. It very much has to do with football finances, the salary cap imposed by the Spanish football league, the fact that everyone expected Messi to be a one club player - but instead due to financial mismanagement by Barca's prior Board (which included raids of club offices and criminal arrests of former officers including the President - Messi had to leave because they could not offer him a new contract after his old one ended. Both Messi and Barca wanted him to stay, but they could not fit his salary under the league imposed salary cap so it was essentially taken out of both the player's and club's hands. That's what makes this even more bittersweet.
Ironically his career in Barcelona started and ended with a napkin/tissue. When he was a kid he signed his first contact with Barcelona on a napkin in a restaurant and now this emotionally scene where he can't hide his emotions. Great story ended on a sad way, both sides wanted him to stay, but just couldn't for financial reasons
Here in Argentina, an old interview revealed that Maradona, a few years ago, said that Messi was not going to end the Barcelona relationship positively.
Not sponsorship like US no, all European clubs have youth teams, like this : Barcelona under 21, under 18, under 15 and so on. Barcelona youth football structure is be know as "La Masia" (The Farm), and some of the world's greatest ever was coming from here. Like Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol. Love you videos!
He didn't have to leave, if he had wanted to stay, he could have come to a temporary arrangement while they restructured to get back within the rules - he could afford to reduce more. The game is distorted by these ridiculously high pay deals - all top flight clubs should have salary limits imposed on them and more distribution to the lower leagues and grass roots.
Messi legally cannot play for Barca even for FREE, imagine that. With Messi, Barca has 110% salary cap, without Messi, they has 95% salary cap, you know how many salary cap for one La Liga's club? It's 70% and the Spain regulation for salary reduction is maximum 50%. Even Messi's wage being cut 50% or even not getting paid at all, he still couldn't play for the club. Barca needs to remove some deadwood in the club like Umtiti, Griez, Dembele, Coutinho, Roberto, and some older players like Pique, Alba, even Busquets but they don't want to leave the club, that's why the only option for Messi is to leave Barca. If those players leave, then Barca definitely could keep Messi with 50% salary cut.
@@sobakasuch.747 I read that with Messi taking a 50% cut (which was all he offered) they would have been at 95%, so more room there. Also if he really is as good as people claim, surely Barcelona would make savings by cutting lesser players first. He tried to leave last year for other reasons, so I think there might be more to this. All in all, this doesn't really stack up. Perhaps as he is not a young player anymore, Barca really weren't that bothered.
Messi and Barca had agreed on a new contract with him taking a 50% pay cut Messi wanted to stay and Barca wanted Messi too, but Barcelona would not have been able to regisger Messi (or any new signings) because of Spanish La Liga 's salary cap
In case you wanted to know the context as to why Messi has left: Barcelona are in serious financial trouble, the situation for them has been worsened by a salary cap put in place in the spanish league to help teams recover from covid. Barcelona were so badly run financially that they were reportedly 200 Million euros per year over the salary cap and could not register new signings until they had fixed that (Since Messi's contract expired this June he is classed as a new signing) Even if Messi played for free there was no way Barcelona could afford to register him, even though he wanted to stay and the club wanted to keep him
Do you realise how much better use to make Barcelona used to pay 71 million euros per year. Castle bonuses and sponsorship he used to own about 180 million a year. Now he's going to PSG in France and only getting paid 25 million big pay cut
My favourite part of this press conference, is how Messi got visibly shaken and upset at the news that Messi was leaving Barcelona. We can only hope that his decision to accept a cheque for a few hundred million from Paris St Germain might have cheered him up by now.
Since you said "whatever happened..." : it's actually a pretty unfortunate situation, and Messi and Barcelona are still on good terms, the problem is that the Spanish league has some kind of salary cap like the leagues in the US, and Barcelona are over the salary cap, so they can't sign him... They were hoping to sell a couple of players that the former president had bought and given them massively overpaid contracts, but didn't find anyone to buy those players so there was no chance for Barcelona to sign Messi, even with him offering to play for the actual minimum that's possible under the leagues rules and having them pay the full amount 3 years after the contract would have ended... So, he didn't want to leave, Barcelona didn't want him to leave, but there just wasn't any way for them to sign a new contract under the leagues rules
"the problem is that the Spanish league has some kind of salary cap" - No the problem is 5+ years of financial/football mismanagement by Barcelona FC. Many good, but not great players on 1/4m+ Euro per week. Players bought at way over value. Their current debt is an eye watering 1.16 Billion Euro, which they have to service annually, which obviously effects their balance sheet (Income). It's also not a salary cap. It's simply no Spanish La Liga team can spend more than 70 or 75% of their income on wages. It's feasible Barca might not even be able to register the players they've signed this summer due to the mismanagement. They need players to leave but they are earning too much to leave. No other club will pay them anything like the salary they are getting at Barca. Very sad, but a problem entirely of their own making.
@@Freehardy yeah, great, you basically told the same story I did, and the end result is still that the problem in resigning Messi is the sort of salary cap... ;)
@@JulioLeonFandinho actually, no... That's another problem, yes, but the problem in trying to resign Messi was not the debt but the sort of salary cap...
This was a total fiasco from Barca management. There were players that signed with barca giving up things in the negotiation just because those people went there to play with Messi. In that group of people are his friend and grandfather from one of his kids (i think the first) Sergio Aguero, a Manchester City living legend and awesome person.
Hello SoGal and Roger. Dry your eyes mate. It is not just a football club, but a place Catalans can be Catalan, a bit like Poland and Napoleon from your history videos. In football terms both clubs were going to join the European Super League, which you should look at to see how supporters really feel about these big clubs and their super rich players. The dog here snored through this video.
You often forget during transfers about the affects on the kids and families who may need to move, whole new life. I'm sure the money helps them sleep at night, but still must be so stressful
I'm fed up of this matter right now, it's not the end of the world precisely, it happened many times before: players abandon a team to play for other teams, wow! amazing! I never saw it! and Messi crying like a kid the other day, today in Paris smiling and absolutely happy... it's completely appalling 🤦♂️ In what world are we living? what people think football is? in the end is a freaking business, for crying out loud... look, I was rooting for the Barcelona squad during the 90s, I was a fan. But when Barcelona fired Cruyff, which was much more trascendent than THIS, I waste the next years hoping for somebody to make Barcelona play again like when Cruyff was the coach. It never happened and consequently I ended losing interest in Barcelona. I'm telling this because it's a teenager mentality here, it's feelings and drama (because for teenagers everything is a drama) but when people grow up, everything is more calm and collected and football is no longer a drama. Or it shouldn't be... but it seems it is, it's really a drama, I've seen growing Barcelona fans crying. By growing I mean people with white hair (or without hair because of their age) But it's a business, people, it's a business, and a nasty one, very corrupted.
Basically, Barcelona's previous board of directors mismanaged the club so poorly that they ended up in a 1 Billion dollar debt, and sold Messi's teammates, against his and their own will. So Messi too wanted to leave last year, but Barcelona didn't let him. Then a new president was appointed (he had also been the president of Barcelona 10 years ago) who was going to fix things. He signed Messi's best friend, Kun Aguero, so they can finally play together in the same club. And Messi wanted to stay and offered to take a 50% pay cut so that they could afford the salaries of everyone else. But due to Financial Fair Play Regulations, considering Barcelona's debt, they are not allowed to re-sign Messi. (Which they would need to do because his contract expired.) Messi offered to take an even lower wage, but was told that it would not make a difference. This came as a shock to Messi because both him and the club had reached an agreement and were convinced that it would work out. But then all of a sudden, a couple of days before the press conference, he was told the bad news.
In order to understand football well you have to be updated follow Instagram pages and blogs messi story was running for like one week atleast you would have understood some crucial details
Totally off topic but I had to google Ronaldinho's prison stint and found this on Wikipedia 😂: "While in prison, he competed in a prison futsal tournament, where his team was victorious. They won 11-2 in the finals, with Ronaldinho scoring 5 goals and assisting the other 6. He attempted to appeal the detention order but was ordered to remain under house arrest with his brother. On 24 August 2020, Ronaldinho and his brother were released from Paraguayan prison after their judge agreed to a plea deal with fines of US$90,000 and US$110,000 for the brothers, respectively" Dude was scoring goals and doing up tekkerz in the jailhouse lmaoo
so this is the story.. messi was born in rosario.. argentina.. with a growth hormone deficency.. he was already playing in newell's old boys of rosario since he was 3 or 4 years old.. in the puberty when the problem was notorious and he was behind the normal develop for his age he had to start a hormonal treatment.. which consisted of expensive vaccines.. it was too expensive for newell's old boys.. also messi was a very good player as a kid but just a project.. so they didn't find it worth.. they tried luck in river plate.. club from buenos aires.. they rejected messi.. so messi's father went to barcelona and started to make some contacts.. one of the scouter said if he could send a video of messi juggling an orange.. he was in.. and they sent a video of messi juggling an orange and a golf ball.. after that first messi's contract with barcelona was made and signed at a restaurant in a paper napkin.. messi moved to barcelona at the age of 13 and the rest is known by everyone
SoGal, think bout this. There's only one NBA, only Americans practice basketball and have a league like that. The rest of the world has football leagues in every country. Imagine how many good basketball players would exist if every country would have their own NBA. That's why basketball is a much smaller sport than football. That's why you can't compare. The whole world is trying to play football and only Messi can be the best.

Great video. Would be amazing to see you react to his signing to PSG. Videos of his arrival in Paris, him on the balcony of his hotel with thousands of fans outside, and some stats about his contract and financial impact on PSG. Thanks for your amazing content 👏👏
Messi came to Barcelona as a boy and to leave a man! An end to a glorious era!
They had a friendly game on that same day, on the 10th minute the whole stadium chanted Messi, Messi, Messi!
Hi Sogal. Yes. The team mates you saw are His team mates that you are seeing are Pique (Best defenderin Spain), De Jong (Best Midfielder in Netherland), and Griezmann (One of the best forwards in France).
actually that analogy you made between Messi and Jordan was perfect
Started watching for the history but as a braziian i end up hooked by the football vids love both types and your energy is amazing! Keep the great work!
Grande el messi, yo crecí viéndolo desde pequeño junto a rafa Márquez joder que ídolo
Messi is the Jordan of soccer, but yes, its not the same context.
Hi, my name is Matias, I'm from Argentina. I recently started watching your videos, I like your content. As a good Argentine and a soccer lover, I see that you are understanding the game little by little but there are things that you still don't, if you need or have some questions about the sport or the players, I can help you a lot if you want. greetings from the country where Messi was born
I will always root for Barça, and I will always root for Messi, even if they’re facing each other. A very sad situation, and even though he gains a lot from this move, he is still handling it with class and respect.
My favourite footballer of all time is Mr Lionel Messi
The true 🐐.
The translator did a great job in capturing the emotions
Hey Sogal, I just wanted to say I've been loving your videos especially on football. You as an American reacting to football and I just wanna say you are very genuine, your views on it. I really admire your passion to learn more about football and it's events in every video and trust me every new fan goes through that and they'll eventually know about it's stuff. As you've posted on Messi leaving Barcelona, I suggest you to watch some of major barca matches , there you can learn alot about him just by watching these highlights and also if you have time do watch this interview to know how he is as a footballer and how is life is being a footballer. ua-cam.com/video/3N0Mm8YAWMA/v-deo.html
Call me a bandwagon fan but i’ll be rooting for PSG to win the champions league this coming season. I want to see Messi win the Champions League one more time.
Nice video! Well done, Jodie Foster.
Reckoned to be worth $600M so Messi could have taken a pay cut to stay at Barcelona or leave to earn money at PSG for a year or two.
And with Steven Naismith announcing HIS retirement this has been an very emotional summer.
🤣
Club football in Europe also starts this Friday until May next year hope to see you watch some club football soon.
It's strange that I like this video. Well edited.
Even the translator is crying
Actually, I think comparison of Jordan and Messi is quite on the place.
How? Jordan left in 1998 after the last shot, the winner against UTAH JAZZ. He only came back in 2001 to wizards.
@@Čangrizavi_Cinik I think he meant more of the status they have in their respective sports. But yeah, it's not really the same situation.
Live in Bangladesh. Never in my whole I heard who jordan is. No one knows who jordan is in southern asia. But everyone and their mom kmows who messi is.

Do a video on Barcelona's financial troubles.

You should react to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, hes also 1 of the greats but he is very different than most players :D hes still playing top level football and hes 39 (40) years old
There is a whole Doku to his life called Messi from 2016 , also i would recommend the Doku of Christiano Ronaldo. Both lifed through tough times to be where they are today. Also i would recommend a doku from netflix, i will look up how it was called. it is about what psychologists did research, how most of the goats in diffrent sports have traumas from their childhood which pushed them to greatness, two of the exemples they use are messi and ronaldo.
You have to react to the anthems of the major European clubs, chanted by the fans on stadiums. Madrid, Liverpool, so many good ones
The FCB suporters are devastated, we cant imagine this
SoGal - wow, it's always great to find someone new to the world of soccer, and my goodness, a woman too!
Messi was earning over €1million euros per week on his Barca deal. Staggering.
Here in Argentina, an old interview revealed that Maradona, a few years ago, said that Messi was not going to end the Barcelona relationship positively.
oh and here's a gift v=SNGKkRmWQxI
The jail effect killed me 😂
People really slander him cause he’s always stayed at one club 🤦♂️
And when he's moving they'll say he just move for the money. Ignorant people are so dumb
Psg officially announced they signed Messi
Please do a reaction to his biography, very interesting
Not sponsorship like US no, all European clubs have youth teams, like this : Barcelona under 21, under 18, under 15 and so on.
Barcelona youth football structure is be know as "La Masia" (The Farm), and some of the world's greatest ever was coming from here. Like Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol. Love you videos!
If you want to know more about him, watch "Messi the Movie", which is a documentary based on his life. It's really good !
The Barcelona academy is called La Masia. And yes, Messi is by far the best product of La Masia.
You might already know but there is a great documentary on iplayer about Messi

The part of the nonstop applauses was the sadly part of the anime
As chelsea fan but its not that thing we (footballfans) can handle it
His messi
I just can't explain it to my self 🤕🤕
@@abcdfgeh5891 the salary cap for one club is 70%, 95% is still far too high. Read my comment again above, i explained everything already.
Messi and Barca had agreed on a new contract with him taking a 50% pay cut
Messi wanted to stay and Barca wanted Messi too, but Barcelona would not have been able to regisger Messi (or any new signings) because of Spanish La Liga 's salary cap
Saddest day
In case you wanted to know the context as to why Messi has left:
Barcelona are in serious financial trouble, the situation for them has been worsened by a salary cap put in place in the spanish league to help teams recover from covid. Barcelona were so badly run financially that they were reportedly 200 Million euros per year over the salary cap and could not register new signings until they had fixed that (Since Messi's contract expired this June he is classed as a new signing)
Even if Messi played for free there was no way Barcelona could afford to register him, even though he wanted to stay and the club wanted to keep him
Do you realise how much better use to make Barcelona used to pay 71 million euros per year.
I can taste the salt from here.
Very sad, but a problem entirely of their own making.
that's not the problem, the problem is that Barcelona is bankrupted, the club's debt is astronomical

An America woman who likes football ⚽️? That’s really impressive

You have to react to the documentry about him its on netflix i think
You often forget during transfers about the affects on the kids and families who may need to move, whole new life. I'm sure the money helps them sleep at night, but still must be so stressful
I'm fed up of this matter right now, it's not the end of the world precisely, it happened many times before:
players abandon a team to play for other teams, wow! amazing! I never saw it!
and Messi crying like a kid the other day, today in Paris smiling and absolutely happy... it's completely appalling 🤦♂️
In what world are we living? what people think football is? in the end is a freaking business, for crying out loud... look, I was rooting for the Barcelona squad during the 90s, I was a fan.
By growing I mean people with white hair (or without hair because of their age)
But it's a business, people, it's a business, and a nasty one, very corrupted.
Totally off topic but I had to google Ronaldinho's prison stint and found this on Wikipedia 😂:
"While in prison, he competed in a prison futsal tournament, where his team was victorious. They won 11-2 in the finals, with Ronaldinho scoring 5 goals and assisting the other 6. He attempted to appeal the detention order but was ordered to remain under house arrest with his brother. On 24 August 2020, Ronaldinho and his brother were released from Paraguayan prison after their judge agreed to a plea deal with fines of US$90,000 and US$110,000 for the brothers, respectively"

so this is the story.. messi was born in rosario.. argentina.. with a growth hormone deficency.. he was already playing in newell's old boys of rosario since he was 3 or 4 years old.. in the puberty when the problem was notorious and he was behind the normal develop for his age he had to start a hormonal treatment.. which consisted of expensive vaccines.. it was too expensive for newell's old boys.. also messi was a very good player as a kid but just a project.. so they didn't find it worth.. they tried luck in river plate.. club from buenos aires.. they rejected messi.. so messi's father went to barcelona and started to make some contacts.. one of the scouter said if he could send a video of messi juggling an orange.. he was in.. and they sent a video of messi juggling an orange and a golf ball.. after that first messi's contract with barcelona was made and signed at a restaurant in a paper napkin.. messi moved to barcelona at the age of 13 and the rest is known by everyone

Imagine how many good basketball players would exist if every country would have their own NBA. That's why basketball is a much smaller sport than football. That's why you can't compare.
