For anyone who wants to know: (fellow Anatomy and Physiology student to tell you stuff) - Sebum refers to oily lubricant that is secreted by the appropriately named sebaceous glands. It's usually made up of complex oils such as triglycerides, squalene, fatty acid, among other things. (These chemicals are completely harmless by the way) - If one of the sebaceous glands gets clogged, it can be easily treated with cryotherapy. In fact, most of the time it doesn't even need sufficient treating. Similar to a pimple, the sebum just gets trapped under layers of skin (usually the stratum corneum and the stratum granulosum, which are two of the top layers of the epidermis (the epidermis is the top layer of skin for anyone who wants to know)) and under this top layer of skin you can easily figure out where the sebum is and either pop it, or remove it some other way. - There is one major confusion though: sebaceous and sudoriferous glands. Often times the differences get mixed so let me clarify: Sebaceous glands secret oil that moisturize and lubricate the skin, and also protects against other foreign microbes. Sudoriferous glands, on the other hand, secrete things like sweat and other smelly bacteria. Another key difference is where they're located. Sebaceous glands are located all over the body, and never attached to any hair follicles. Sudoriferous glands however, are very particular in location. The main difference is eccrine and apocrine glands. Eccrine type glands are pretty much found everywhere, arms, legs, etc. But apocrine glands are in very hairy areas. That's why they're associated with armpits, because even if you don't have any hair there, it's one of the fastest regenerating hair follicles. Other apocrine areas include the groin or the scalp. Lastly, eccrine glands are always on their own like sebaceous glands, but apocrine glands always open up via a hair follicle, hence why the smell of a foul armpit can be reduced by shaving!
