Making A Stone Cup From Solid Granite
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 лис 2017
- I made this more or less on a whim, thinking it would be a neat thing to do. The cup holds about a cup (250ml) of liquid has a very solid, hefty feel. Use this one at your secret order initiation ceremonies and all ritual sacrifices :)
I could have taken the finishing further by grinding it smooth and polishing it, but I really like the rough texture and how a liquid will bring out those incredibly rich colours, almost like magic.
For practical purposes, it would work well as a mortar and I may make a pestle from the same stone to use with it.

John Heisz could you do that for a future project, make a mortar and pestle!!?
John Heisz beautiful! Great job John. That opening sequence, as you walk back to the table with the rock, really shows off your hourglass figure!
Just amazing, once again
Really impressive
Talking of the colours, I wonder if an application of Renaissance Wax would keep them showing even when the cup is dry! (Renaissance wax - May be used on any solid surface including wood, metal (coins), marble, onyx, shell, stone, ivory, plastics or leather/paper . . . . )
New reality show. John trapped in the wilderness with nothing but an angle grinder and fresh batteries delivered by drone every day.
krtwood nice one
Primitive Technology 2.0 :D
angle grinder powered by batteries ? hell no
Well if you give him a corded one he's just going to follow the cord back to civilization. As it is it's going to be a bitch getting him to hunt squirrels instead of the damn drones for more stuff to build with.
i would watch that
A beautiful cup. As you were making this I remember when you built the table you carving the cup on. Time flies. Thanks John.
John I do not usually comment on the works I see, but this one had to comment because I found a work of art with wonderful colors, continue never stop and God bless you.
Amazing work with the angle grinder! Beautiful piece!
Seen lots of wood ones but granite nope. Wow stunning and great job John.
Now do it by hand like the Egyptians. Make sure it’s within a few thousandths of a perfect sphere!
While humanity is torn between one paradigm and another. It's amazing everything you can do with your hands. Definitely his revolutionary ideas, his wit have no borders, first revolutionize the mind before being executed with the actions that give form and meaning to such ideas. From Venezuela, we congratulate you for this great capacity that inspires you to always look for new challenges that dignify humanity. Excuse me if my lack of skill in English makes what I want to express difficult. Affectionately yours
One way to speed up shaping of external surfaces is to use a band saw. A surplus meat cutting saw with a diamond-tooth blade (commercial item) would make short shrift of that task. Being a food-grade machine means it is water and rust-proof thus water cooling may be employed to extend blade life.
When you run out of mugs but don't want to do dishes... Amazing work John!
This is why I need UA-cam. This is why I want no other type of videos, but the ones that encouraging to be productive. I do things out of bamboo tho. Also I would like you to check those radiation levels, granite sometimes gives off a bit of radioactivity, so marble might be the safest option for drinking, jade too alongside with quartz. Love to see the work tho. Can you cut out a bubbler out of marble? Or a smoking pipe or a bong. the smokeware series would bring in so many people, I would like to post those as well
Great video, you are a man with the builders spirit. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us all 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
What a rockin cup....Great stuff!
BitHead1000 no
Nice!
I love how adding the water brought the colours alive.
Don't know why but this was very satisfying to watch.
a stone kuska ,i love it ,im as dangerous as you with grinders , had a few near misses ,now a wear a glove ,great job man
Awesome video! I love the colors in the granite, and the cinematography is fantastic!
it is beautiful John, thank you sharing.
John leaves timber and talking with an improved series of stone and silence. Good stuff. Thanks and Cheers, David.
wow john , now that why i watch your videos, because your style is any thing, and every thing, and not just a instructional wood working video , very well done ,even the accidental split, was incorporate into the end piece as a design feature , very well done
SPECTACULAR WORK!!! just guessing... 2 days and 5 blades later it turned out marvelous!!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING!
i'm going to try it when i get my hands on some granite!
pretty cool john
That was fun to watch!
Thank you for this! I wanted to make a cup out of granite for awhile but couldn’t ever think how to do it till now
Really impressive! Don't forget to go to a home improvement store, and look for a granite sealing compound (look in the kitchen section); it's the stuff they use to seal granite grain structure in granite countertops, to keep food acids from weathering the more-vulnerable minerals in the rock.
greetings mr.john, that there cup is one heck of a great job you showed that with patience anything can be done 👏👏👏👌
It's a lot of work! You should see the Samurai Carpenter that did a whole sink bowl made of granite. I think it was for a bathroom. He made two, the first one was small, the second one was bigger.
It's simple..beatiful..nice work !
Beautiful video, amazing video editing. Simple idea with flex. PS: work safety first. ;-) thank you for video.
Beautiful. I really enjoyed watching this. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome job, John.
Brilliant John, simply brilliant. Thank you for making my day.
wow I ddnt think much of it from the thumbnail but man after watching it totally cool John
That was cool! 10,000 years from now, barring some catastrophe, that cup will still be a cup as usable as it is now. Now THAT is craftsmanship!
Awesome job and video John , Well done!
you deserve a sponsorship from the company that makes those discs.
Cool John, it left me realy speechless
Beautiful, John!
As a stonecarver I can only say Well done John! You have a good feel of handling that machine and the shape. We'd do that almost in the same way, except that we'd use a diamond blade that's mounted on a flange at the end or the arbour, so that it's completely flat on one side and further away from your hand. The way you're using it has the drawback that you could cut into your own hand much easier. Thanks for showing the fun of making things out of stone.
The cup was there. For 400 Million years. Then comes John and took it out of the stone.
This is honesty one of the coolest things you've made. Very nice.
I really like this kind of builds (like the spalted maple foot stool, or the big mallet used to “fix” your printer, etc.) and the cinematography is great too.
Looking forward to seeing more in the future. All the best!
I have no words !!!! It is fantastic, many thanks for sharing.
I love it. I admire your patience. Great Job.
Really interesting project John, thanks for sharing with us!! W.
Very wonderful project John! Your stone projects are amazing, you know how to work whit it!
Keep the idea's coming fast and hard Big man.
Nice project John, enjoyed watching this one take shape thank's for sharing.
As my dear old dad used to say, "Ya musta been short on things to do..."
Still, it was interesting to watch.
Thank you.
John thanks for the videos. They bring peace with beautiful of nature. First time I was saying "hurry up". Now thanks.
Amazing John!
Seriously sweet man!
Nice use of the scrench!! 😎
Yeah this is really magic, it looks so fantastic. I'm impressed, how fast you can make the little steps, because i thought the stone was harder. Great work!
Rock solid work!
Very cool John. Love the creativity
Simply put. Lovely.
Nice work john
just shows how you can apply skills learned in one craft towards just about anything
This is AWESOME John!!! You really should provide more info though. Here are some burning questions I (and probably others) have:
1. What kind of blade for your angle grinder?
2. How many blades did you go through while making it?
3. About how long did it take you to complete it from start to finish?
4. If you were to polish it, what would you use?
5. Is there any way to preserve the 'wet' look it has when water is applied?
6. If you were to cut a hole in the handle to make it look like a coffee cup, how would you go about it?
7. Strictly for the safety Nazis, did you wear a respirator?
Dimond disk, prob only the 1 they last, I would guess 6 or 7 hours with the smooth out, to polish the same as everything else, the wet look tile I'd try that tile/grout sealer, handle a dimond holesaw in a drill. Dosnt look like he did
8. Will the cup be hard enough against a dish washer?
aw, come on. Who cares. Just enjoy the vid for what it is. Well done John, love the colours.
The wet look would be preserved by polishing. You can get diamond hole saws for a few bucks off Aliexpress.
E210 Dall - I don't know... maybe because I was thinking of trying it myself & wanted to learn from the experience of somebody who has done it???
how many hours, and how many blades... wow. Love the colour, John!
that is exactly what I want to know, it doesnt look like a job for a single slotted diamond wheel.
It took about an hour to cut the bowl part, with many breaks in between. I wore out my old (10 year old) blade doing that, then had to go buy a new one to finish it. Those blade last a remarkably long time.
It took about 2 hours to cut away the outside of the cup and finish shaping it, but all of this was spread out over two days.
Really beautiful, I can imagine the pain in the arm after carving for such a long time.
John Heisz - Absolutely beautifully done. I carve alabaster and marble but never granite. Maybe I’ll give it a try. What kind of blade are you using? Can you buy them in the US? Nice video and thank you.
That really inspiring and with just one tool!!!
That was very calming to watch. Nice project and great editing.
Great video John. I really enjoyed it
My ritual sacrifices require more than 250mL of blood. Could this be scaled up?
Stone hot tub? Now, where did I leave that 4 ton boulder...
That's a lot of dead somethings, John.
You’ll never summon a competent demon with anything less than 666ml of virgin blood
You need Jesus Christ!
@@boriserjavec6470 I suppose he did provide the ultimate human/blood sacrifice...
I don't think he'd be willing to go another round though. 😏
Good one John, I liked the way you shot and edited this
Thanks John :)
@@JohnHeisz How long did it take you?
Hey John I really like these videos!! I dig the shop stuff and the jugs and sleds and setups but you’ve got a knack for the creative and hope to see more!
I really enjoy these episodes, thanks for sharing all the best to you and yours
One of my favorites videos from you! Keep it up good sir!
Amazing, beautiful, loved it
Very unique! Great job
extremely satisfying to watch! thank you for sharing.
Looks amazing!
Great work! Love the concept
You creative guy ! How cool ( beautiful ) did that come out ! Like the way the colors come to life ! Awesome John.
OMG John! Your skills never cease to amaze me! Beautifully Done Sir! Beautifully Done! Videography was superb also!
When I saw the thumbnail I thought you picked it up at a store. Then you started to carve it an I admit being totally amazed. When you get bored, your creativity is astounding!
A true craftsman right there
Came out better than expected! Great job
That was really fun to watch. Thanks for showing us.
John, That was awesome. You come up with some fantastic innovative ideas.
Brilliant!
You're an artist!! BTW, Michaelangelo used a hand drill, the type you use to start a fire. So totally legit!
Wow. Beautifull
Very nice!
I love your channels. Thanks for doing what you do.
nice job! love the chip hammer
Great work!
Truly beautiful. You inspire me
Well done John. You didn't say a word during the video. I guess your work speaks for itself. Thanks!
Really cool John! 👍👊
Now that's just flat-out cool, John. Well done. Very well done.
Well I can say that this is a change of pace from woodworking. Great video
It's videos like this that make your channel great John. I thoroughly enjoy your build videos and its projects like this that elevate my curiosity. I don't know if you most of your followers realize it or even if you do but you're an artist and it shows through in a lot of your projects. Keep up the great work. Thank again.
Agree - John's craftsmanship is beyond question, but the art of these videos takes it to another level. I just couldn't stop watching the maul/printer video
Nice work John. You seem to be willing to work with any medium. Very admirable.
Man.. mornings must be tough if you need that big of a cup of coffee ;-)
Very imaginative! Thanks!
really loved this one!
This is AWESOME!
Lovely! - Thank You.
Wow, that was amazing
That’s a really cool cup.
