I had a KLR 650 for 9 years and it was a great bike! I now have a 2014 XT660Z and it is AWESOME! You cant go wrong with either bike, they are both great in their own ways. Cheers from Australia!😎
If you are lucky there's some klr for sale, chances are big it'll be in another country though. I found one in my own country for 1350eur (Belgium) 38000km. Planning to make it awesome and go to mongolia :)
Can I fix a carburetor? Yes, it's like knitting to me In fact on most singles I can actually pull the pilot Jets sitting on the side of the road without taking the carburetor off of the bike So can most of the Riders I know who started in the 70s and 80s, except for the ones who never serviced their own bikes It's a trade-off, injection on a quality motorcycle usually requires less tinkering, but tinkering is much easier on a carbureted motorcycle What I have found is that most people who spend a lot of time on or near paved roads tend to prefer fuel injection, and most people who go far from civilization tend to prefer carburetors The downside of carburetors other than their trade-offs of course it is as you mentioned, in Europe, most carbureted motorcycles aren't available due to the stringent emissions requirements
As someone who has not ridden either bike, I like the industrial look of the KLR. I also like the price. I have heard heard other vloggers state that it is one of the most comfortable bikes they have ridden. It has one of the largest fuel tanks in its class. On the other hand, I just don't care for a carbureted thumper engine. I prefer the injected two cylinder engine such as the Tenere has. If I owned a KLR, I would have to do the doohickey, and thermostat fixes, raise the bars, install a better windscreen, and upgrade, and loctite all the chassis fasteners. With the Tenere, what do you need to do other than a few mods to personalize the bike. I love the looks of the Royal enfield 650 INT! I rode a 70s Honda 350, and the looks of the Royal Enfield bring back all of those fond memories. For touring though...? I am very interested in the Tenere 700, and will be thrilled when Pavlin test rides one. For touring, I think it is the better choice. There seem to be a few gripes, but hopefully those will be addressed before the US release. It is expensive compared to the KLR, and RE 650, but it will be cheap compared to the Honda Africa Twin, and much lighter. I saw a reliability chart which was based on real world data, and Yamaha was number 1. That is an important factor to consider. I can't wait for the full length episodes of this trip to post. Thanks Pavlin, and all of your friends who help make these trips possible.
@@keeganwrathmall Yes. It was a much more expensive bike, at the time, than the KLR. Even at that, Pavlin had to make many modifications before it would meet his requirements. I have since looked at the new KLR at my local dealer, and it is just too tall, and heavy for my age, and riding experience.
The Tenere was going to cost twice the amount i paid for the KLR and sits in the shed most of the time like other people's bikes. So for the occasional adventure it's perfect.
Hey Pavlin, greetings from Poland :) I think, that XRV 750 Africa Twin scholud be tested by such great Traveler as You. Your videos are great extra combined with beer in garage :) greetings ;)
Awesome comparison! Let’s do this..... put the price difference (about $3000) worth of mods into the Klr to make them both equally priced and see which bike you like! I’m betting it’s pretty tough... that’s a lot of upgrades for a Klr because even the mods are cheap... just a thought 😎 Have a beer for me ok? Happy riding 👍
Yes, dry sump is a bit more work, but I prefer the dry sump. Never knew about until I bought my XT660R. Even with almost 10,000km with current oil, the oil is still fairly clean. My service will be done this month again
I am coming back to an adventure bike at age 69. I raced enduro in the 1970s so I am a bit nervous. Its been a long time. I can get a nice KLR for less than $6k here in Australia. The Tenere is too tall for me. I am only 5'7". I am also looking at the G650GS. Its even lower than the KLR. The other great thing about the KLR is the range of accessories and after market bits that are not too expensive. I am still three months away from a decision.
The Yamaha is not available in Canada, next year no KLR either. No doubt the XT is a more refined motorcycle, but that comes with the price tag. Even the mighty Yamaha will have to be modified for the riders weight with springs, most bikes do because it is never one size fits all. So the price point is very important. You can set up the KLR suspension to suit your weight and riding style, set up the cockpit to suit your height and comfort with bar risers (ROX pivot) and handle bar bend, buy your kid a mini bike and still have money to take the wife out for dinner before you hit the cost of the Tenere.
Love your vids! You’re on a roll... So, do something on the DR 650, if you love simplicity. I have a KLR and a DR and the subcontinent of Africa is a great place to ride both...
Love the Dr, not only is a carbureted, you can adjust the valves without removing the camshaft I'm on a dr200 myself right now, as I'm just learning off road skills
I think the Honda Transalp is the KLR of Europe. The differences between the two are very market specific based on the conditions in each region, but essentially aimed at like minded people per region. The Tenere on the other hand is rather different, being aimed at a more aggressive off road explorer than either the KLR or Transalp.
i have a klr 650, dependable, and easy to maintain (and if i drop it, i just pick it up (no big tears)). was getting 4.9L/100k till i cleaned the air filter up to 4.6 now. I use my klr mostly to commute to and from work daily 85kms round trip, alot of that in highway traffic, 110+ km/hr, Klr working hard at 5000 rpms. considering (wish list) Africa Twin next bike just for the highway speeds. luv your videos and to ride. happy trails.

Since the Tenere was never sold in the USA I can't comment on the XT 660 Z but the aftermarket is your friend on the KLR however that will bring your cost up to the Tenere's. The KLR Dash and a Zero gravity windshield gives the KLR that Dakar Rally look and better protection for around $150 US. Sasha, blue Loctite is your friend. ;) If the Tenere has similar fuel capacity then the Yammy would edge out the KLR in my mind. However, my KLR isn't going anywhere, we're pals for life.
My 2013 KLR is a virtual sail in the wind and leaves me feeling l have been wrestling a bull all day (Canadian prairies). My 2015 Super Tenere mocks the wind and doesn’t even blink when it blows. How does the Tenere 660 (and the T700) do in the wind? Thanks Pavlin!
What would you choose for an Europe to Asia trip: a XT660Z like you've got or an XRV750 Africa Twin from 2002/3? Does it matter or is it preference only?
Someone else said the same thing. Here in the states we have the KLR, Tenere isn't available. Even the new Tenere 700 is available in Europe now. But in America we have to wait another year. I probably would have preferred the Tenere for the extra power. Our interstate highway system you have to be able to cruise at 80 mph sometimes, and the KLR is too slow. And I hear a lot of people complaining that to cruise at even 70 on the KLR a lot of them burn oil.
You cannot compare. KLR is like a tractor very industrial you can plow the fields with it. Refined over 30 years and done more miles than a tenere hundred fold. KLR designed for you not your ego and when you sell one you end up buying another above everything available. KLR not the best at anything but its the best bike in the world.
Maybe the new and "little" improved KLR for 2022 will be in the market. Euro compliant, better seat and windshield, EFI .. Should see a review one day I think. 👍
Great comparison review. Zero room to argue because you started off saying it's a subjective review. I prefer the Dakar style too. But the dual purpose style is nice. I prefer a twin over a single cylinder. But to be fair, if you upgrade the KLR with accessories to reach the same price point as the ten' I'd bet it could be much harder to decide which is better. The deciding feature? For me.... FI vs a carb. I'd say the Ten' still wins, but only barely. Cheers!
Much better to go with a XT660R over the Tenere 660 .. it’s a whopping 30Kilos lighter, same engine & HP but the 660R pumps out a little bit more torque . 30Kilos is ferking huge.
Saludos.
