  • Mleiha Fort is an ancient structure in the Sharjah region of the UAE.
It was originally built around 30BC and discovered in 1990 during the construction of a water pipeline adjacent to the highway that formerly ran across the site. A French archeological team were the first to undertake extensive excavations to uncover this ancient building.
Later HH, Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, ordered the diversion of the tarmac road crossing the site so that with fort could be fully excavated and preserved.
Nearly square, the fort measures around 56.11m x 51.77m and is built of mud-brick. Thick fortified walls with rooms on the outside enclose a large central courtyard.
There are towers at each corner and in the middle of each side of the fort, with the central tower on the eastern side forming the entrance to the building.
Today the fort has been restored and is covered by a large steel frame shading structure to protect it from the elements.
I recommend combining it with the Mleiha Archeological Centre and the Sharjah Off-Road History Museum which are nearby for a full day’s outing.
