I was born and raised in San Francisco. I had a friend whose family owned a restaurant in Chinatown. I met him in junior high. We hadn't been friends long when he invited me to his birthday dinner at the restaurant. It was big with a bunch of relatives. They were all of Chinese ancestery and treated me like family. After dinner they all got quiet when they brought me out my fortune cookie. I opened it and it read "That wasn't chicken." A giant laugh went up when they all saw the look on my face. This reminds me of when I used to live in Oakland. I miss it so much, I used to go to SF all the time 💔 my two cents on the safety of the Bay area? I moved out there completely by myself at 18. I lived on a college campus for a little over a year, then I moved into an apartment with an engaged couple who worked across the bridge and were never home and needed someone to watch their dog (we had opposite schedules). I was completely safe when I lived in Oakland, way safer than before I moved. I came from rural Ohio and NC, where the crime rate was supposedly low but unspeakable horrors happened to me constantly. In Oakland, I finally received help and safety. (And before anyone tries to claim that I had a different/privileged experience or thinks I was living off rich family, I lived below the poverty line for the first 18 years of my life and funded my move by getting a full ride scholarship by staying at the top of my class despite what I was surviving)
I live in rural America. It is not safe. There are people in them woods that are not in their right mind and will shoot you if they see you. In their minds you are a claim jumper or the Revenue agent come too take their moonshine or pot. It is safer in a city around decent folks but the dive bars in small towns also are not safe because of the town Bullies hang out there and like too sucker punch unsuspecting men and think they are tuff because they blasted a guy with a sucker punch from behind and then beat the crap out of them makes them fell tuff. Of course nobody saw nothing. Even though there was ten people there when it happened. They all cousins and business partners.
You seem more realistic and honest … and I don’t think anyone can get the realistic picture in a day or two, especially when it involves public policy….
10 minutes in,and you're right, its nothing like we've been hearing. Where's all the homelessness, the poop on the sidewalk and overall dysfunction? Hi Hussy!
Does not work. I know from experience, that burglars are not that smart. They will punch the lock on an unlocked door and pry open an unlocked glove box.
I moved to San Francisco in 1968. I missed the summer of love by one year. I lived in the mission district. Also I was a bicycle messenger in the downtown area. When I lived there the cable car was only 25 cents and you could get a transfer to ride the other means of transportation. About 5 years ago I looked on the internet and the cable car was 5 dollars to ride. I loved San Francisco. There so many things to do. As a matter of fact I met Carlos Santana at hippie hill in Golden Gate Park. Eventually I moved to Oregon and have been here every sense. BART was under construction the hole time that I lived there. Saw a lot of good concerts at the Fillmore West.
I lived in SF for 30 years and everything looks pretty “normal” to me! I’ve been away for 10yrs. Thanks for the update and sharing a great cross-section of many neighborhoods👍🏻🙂
One of your best vids, yet, Wonderhussy...I'm born, raised, educated and employed in the City, and lived in the SF Bay Area my entire 72 years "and counting" of my life and plan to die here, too....and for all the good and bad, there is no place better, over all, and even in spite of the higher cost of living...you get used to it and adapt, and the trade offs, in my opinion, would be TOO much to give up...!!! Nice to hear and see you enjoyed your time here....come back again, there's so much more to do and see throughout the entire Bay Area...!!! 👍👍
This is first rate reporting, right here. Another prime example of why Wonderhussy Public Media should be at 2.69M followers, not 269K. I drove down the Pacific Coast highway, once and had no intention of stopping in San Francisco, but when I took in the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, it was just too irresistible to pass up. I booked a bunk at a hostel and found a parking garage about 5 miles away where you could park for $20 a day, and then walked everywhere - dinner in China town - not.a bad cup of coffee anywhere to be found (other than Starbucks). Hands down, the most beautiful city in these whole United States - there's no close 2nd. I could never afford to live there, but would if I could. Maybe when enough tech bros leave for their low-tax capitalist Utopia of Texas, the rents will come back down again for normal people.
PCH is a mice, nice ride. When I drove it, there was a point where the speed limit went really low. Couldn't understand as there was beach to my left and grassy fields to my right. Then I saw the 2 cows. On the beach. Apparently the PCH was built through a farm /ranch and the cows had beach rights! Lol. California cows are happy cows. I can see why.
Thx for a stroll down memory lane. Grew up in The City and attended school and university there during the 1950’s through to 1970. I often get nostalgic for my home town and your post filled me with a sense of joy and hopefulness as The City, aside from some negative publicity, looks very much the same with its quirkiness and modernity. Thank you. Safe travels. S
Native Bay Area kid here. SF has its ups and downs, but she always bounces back. And all cities have homeless problems right now. People like to dis on SF, and I’ve noticed that lots of them haven’t even ever been here. Really, we’re doing okay out here, come out to see for yourself.
I love San Francisco. I try to go at least twice per year, and always enjoy it and feel jealous of you guys who get to be there full time. One of these days I’ll move out there for a while! ❤
Good job WH. I am dropping my usual response on line in reference to SF. It certainly didn't look any worse than any other major city in the U.S. Safe travels.
Actually, I took a trip to Seattle in 2018, and I saw FAR more tents on the sidewalks and just plain homeless than I saw in Sarah's tour. Unlike SF, Seattle gets downright COLD in the winter, and I wonder what the homeless in tents do then? Freeze to death?
go to the mission and other parts of san francisco and you'll see lots of homeless and tents. They clean up the tourist areas. Next time go to the tenderloin at night and some of the surrounding areas and you will see lots of things you dont want to see. Just dont go alone. Amazing job on the video sarah!

i am glad you enjoyed SF, Wonderhussy. I've been a resident since1975. Came here when I was 7. SF today is no worse than any other city, perhaps better. The last place you visited in your video was The Great Highway (lower Great highway). it's not that bad there. Just transients mostly trying to figure things out. There are worse parts of town but overall I feel that it is a safe city. overnight parking is challenging to say the least. It is still a charming place to visit. keep it up.
Awesome video WH. In 84 i was on a solo motorcycle trip. Making my way to SF when i stopped a little town. Moro Oregon. Went to the local watering hole for something to eat and a beer. Got talking to a local farmer and he said staaay away from SF “They’ll steal you blind”. So that story has been going for at least 40 years. Wish ida kept going. 🙂
Hey there, Wonderhussy! I was born in the Washoe County Medical Center and got my bachelors degree from SF State in the 90s. I even sang at the SF Opera once upon a time. My wife and I were just back in SF a week or so ago and it doesn’t seem like much has changed. I lived in the Mission Dist. It was kind of scary then, it’s kind of scary now. We had drinks at Zombie Village in the Tenderloin Dist. It was scary then, it’s scary now. We did park our car at our hotel in Union Square so we wouldn’t get robbed and it was fine. All those Waymo Jaguars are in L.A. too and park right outside people’s condos with loud reverse beeps and super-red brake lights on (ask me how I know!). Anyway, long-time watcher, first-time commentator. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Wonderhussy! I did see that other UA-cam video last week, Mr Gloom & Doom didn’t thrill me. Chamber of Commerce should pay you for this one. I’m a long time fan, 30 miles south of SF in Menlo Park.
As someone who currently lives in another major West Coast city that is constantly beleaguered in the media (Portland, Oregon)...............I really like your approach to exploring and objectively weighing the overall appeal of a given place. 🙂 I'm admittedly beyond burnt out and sick of Portland here and am in the pre-planning stages of moving to Las Vegas, but it's more a reflection of me having lived here for nearly two decades, losing a lot of community here that used to be closely-knit and just desiring a major new shift in life than a reflection of the city being a terrible place or anything like that. I've just changed and outgrown the city, but I'd still recommend it to some specific people and personality archetypes just as many can still appreciate San Francisco even if they're over it for the most part. 😊
Great job presenting a balanced view the city. It has a lot of issues that lots of big cities are experiencing. But it is also an amazing vibrant place to live. The income disparity actually is a bit more than many places but it is nowhere near the apocalyptic wasteland some would like you to believe it is. Good job!!
Thanks for the report Sarah Wonderhussy!! Great good news to see things are still OK at San Fran, always loved that city!! XO, Max (long time subscriber and denizen of The Mojave Desert.....)
Things are not " ok" in San Francisco...yes it was busy when Sarah shot this ..but businesses ARE leaving in droves...and in the Tenderloin it's an open air drug market...bc it's an election year, the powers that be are doing some damage control...it IS nice to see tourism isn't 💯 dead yet...but I wouldn't waste my $ going there, unless like Sarah, I had a free place to stay, and off street parking... I've been several times anyway
So, how many of the stores are open? I saw a video of a guy walking through the tourist area and he was showing that all the stores were boarded up (like 90% of them). Is that true? He said there was only 1 Target left open in the city and everything in the store was locked up in plexiglass boxes so you had to get an associate to get it for you.
@@JC-tq8gm I didn't find it so at Fisherman's Wharf. Pier 39, and the Embarcadero last year. This year, it can be true near MOMA and Saluhall (IKEA building).
@@JC-tq8gm I was born and raised in SF and still live here (right next to Golden Gate Part). There are actually 3 Targets open in the city. The one that guy was talking about was downtown- high tourist area. The other two are in non-tourist neigborhoods: Stonestown and in the City Center, which also has a Whole Foods that will be opening up there soon. Yes, so stores have plexiglass cases, but when I google plexiglas, locked up, stores, an article about the Twins Cities pops up about why detergent is locked up. It seems like it's not only a trend in San Francisco, but other cities across the US.

Hi Wonderhussy, so glad you made a visit to SF! You even made it down to Ocean Beach, in my neck of the woods. The RVs you were looking for are further south around San Francisco State University, and this has been the case since the shutdown. So many were tossed out of the dorms and had to find alternate housing. Now they are joined by others who have found it very costly to live here, despite still having jobs in the city. SF is making the best of a bad situation, but with so much vacant office space it may be a long time.
I was in San Francisco decades ago and really liked it. Amusing that you conflate Ann Arbor, Michigan with Mayberry. Ann Arbor is one of the most liberal cities in the USA and is the home of the University of Michigan. The ultra left Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) first met in Ann Arbor when San Francisco was run by Republicans.
We had a similar experience last year around fisherman's wharf and Garadelli Sq. And we went on a Tuesday morning. Later when I was telling a relative, he about had a cow saying I was making it all up and that SF is a dump. Of course he hadn't been there himself in years
I've seen alot of videos of San Francisco and have been heartbroken to see what had become of it. I'm a Vegas girl like you and like you I enjoy travel. Thank you so much for helping me get thru the mess they left me in. Thank you WONDERHUSSY ❤
Thank you for exposing the real San Fran. It's my all time favorite city. The media presents it as a nightmare. I lived in the east bay area for 5 years, used to go to San Fran often, favorite restaurants in North Beach, the Haight Ashbury with the Grateful Dead house, Golden Gate Park and its culture, the Jefferson Airplane house, Japan Town, China town, it's just a great city. Thank you for taking along your tour of San Francisco! It was nice a nice to have you as a tour guide leading us on a tour of the city. It does reminds me that I have to visit the city soon. The weather looks great and it must have been fun! Looking forward to the next veg! Stay safe and smiling! 😀
Where's all the homelessness, the poop on the sidewalk and overall dysfunction?

better idea, don't go there in the first place.
Does not work. I know from experience, that burglars are not that smart. They will punch the lock on an unlocked door and pry open an unlocked glove box.
Isn't that common sense across the United States?.

I lived in the Bay Area, including SF, for 30 years. I miss it.
I ❤ her tooooo.
Just because of simple geography, San Francisco will never become a Detroit.
Yes, but isn’t that the point !! It is definitely out of realistic expectations for us normal “ textile’s…..
@@patcaribou Rent will come down? Lol, not likely, you under estimate the greed of people.
Excellent video WH. I've hung out in San Francisco many time and have always enjoyed myself. 1 of my more favorite cities to visit

Amazing to see a UA-cam video that tells the truth about San Francisco.
Nice try, bum

Good job WH. I am dropping my usual response on line in reference to SF. It certainly didn't look any worse than any other major city in the U.S. Safe travels.
Actually, I took a trip to Seattle in 2018, and I saw FAR more tents on the sidewalks and just plain homeless than I saw in Sarah's tour. Unlike SF, Seattle gets downright COLD in the winter, and I wonder what the homeless in tents do then? Freeze to death?
IF you surrendered yourself at the fire station, I would adopt you.
Aww how sweet you are ❤

Great upload Wonderhussy really enjoyed your latest adventure. Thanks! Cheers!!
You have such a good way with words! Love your videos 😎
i am glad you enjoyed SF, Wonderhussy.
It is still a charming place to visit. keep it up.
If you’re Elite White and Rich San Francisco is your type of town !😮
And yet white people aren’t the majority of S.F. It’s actually one of America’s most ethnically diverse cities.

As always, honest, original, insightful, intelligent. And most of all entertaining. So apparently San Francisco is surviving. Good to know!
Exactly. And you've never been able to leave anything visible in a car in that city or any other.
About 16 minute mark: Wonderhussy is on the Embarcadero, about a half mile north of the Giants ballpark

I’m a long time fan, 30 miles south of SF in Menlo Park.
As someone who currently lives in another major West Coast city that is constantly beleaguered in the media (Portland, Oregon)...............I really like your approach to exploring and objectively weighing the overall appeal of a given place. 🙂
I'm admittedly beyond burnt out and sick of Portland here and am in the pre-planning stages of moving to Las Vegas, but it's more a reflection of me having lived here for nearly two decades, losing a lot of community here that used to be closely-knit and just desiring a major new shift in life than a reflection of the city being a terrible place or anything like that.
Good job!!
I’ve had the chance to visit San Francisco, several times. Great experience, so I can honestly say, “I left my heart in San Francisco “!’
Highs and lows everywhere. Enjoy the ride…god bless America.
I stayed near Fisherman's Wharf last year for a staycation and had no issues. I am going back next month.
Great video about San Francisco. I really enjoyed it!
I have a lot of fond memories of San Francisco but haven't returned in ages because I believed the dystopian UA-camrs who get millions of views by emphasizing all the homelessness and crime.

I've seen alot of videos of San Francisco and have been heartbroken to see what had become of it. I'm a Vegas girl like you and like you I enjoy travel. I was in SF in May, for the WNBR and Bay to Breakers race. Several of the restaurants I used to frequent have closed down, and there certainly was a lot of other shops that were lying empty.
