Could I please add a question to this topic? If we are using a retinol topically, is it safe to use in the two/three week period of time between conception and a missed period/positive pregnancy test? For instance, I typically drink a glass of wine per week, but I know that the baby would be completely safe if I were to get pregnant without realizing. Would using retinol only once a week make it safe, or using it at a really low concentration, or a combination of both? I’m not saying that I would be drinking alcohol or using a retinol while intentionally trying to get pregnant, but realistically speaking women can get pregnant for a very large portion of their life (puberty to menopause). I’ve also had a lot of friends get pregnant while on birth control who didn’t know until they had a missed period. Does this make any sense? I would really like to start using retinol, but only if it is safe during those first couple weeks of the baby’s life. If it’s not safe, then I would just wait to use it until after menopause. Just cried laughing at the smolder count section ! Thanks for all the good info! Just binged all the videos today and have been assisting my view on my own skin care routine!
So, I'm 30 and from this vantage point I wish I had started retinol in my 20s. However, in retrospect I can see that it took me until the later part of my second decade alive to really understand my skin, how to take care of it, and most importantly, that skin care is not a race, but a marathon. So, while I agree that waiting to use a retinoid likely decreases the positive outcomes, I also think any treatments should be incorporated into a more holistic system that includes - and even emphasizes - using sunscreen religiously.
I just started at 30 and I don’t regret it. I know Dr. Maxfield recommended it earlier but I have always had great skin. I have always exercises and ate well so I barely started using retinol and I just turned 30 a month ago. And the only reason why I started is because of the research I’ve seen on Retinol and I want to avoid aging too fast. I actually have very sensitive skin and I started using the prescribed retinol every single day and I have not had any issues.
I just want to thank the both of you for these really informative videos! I do not have health insurance so cannot go to the derm but have learned so much about skincare from you!
I only started getting into skin care now that I turned 30. I have no wrinkles so far but I really hope my brown people genes keep me looking young despite my late introduction to retinol. :(
Don't stress about it and you'll be good to go. 90% is about the mindset. Believe that you're fine even though you started skincare after 30 and you WILL BE. 😊
@@namrata9235 awww 😊 thanks! I actually still get carded at supermarkets and confused for someone much younger. Genetics helps. But I wish I had known all about retinol/vit c/vit b3 as a teen. Kids these days are lucky with skincare!
@@silviafarfallina Well, if you have healthy skin, it's actually OK not to use many products until you're 30, as your skin still can cope on its own. Apart from sunscreen, of course! We should always use sunscreen when exposed to the sun.
My wife introduced me to this channel last night and I ended up watching about a dozen videos. I have NEVER had any specific skincare routine. I'm in my mid 30s and I'd say my skin is pretty good. I feel like i should pay a bit more attention to my skin health so I'm going to start cleansing, moisturizing and sunblocking daily and will add retinol a few times a week for the anti aging benefits. One question i have which you guys may have addressed in another video that i just haven't seen yet, but can you please specifically discuss tips for guys to care for the skin under their facial hair? I notice that when i haven't shaven for a few weeks, my skin gets more flaky and prone to acne in my beard and mustache areas. It seems to me that this could simply be due to an inherent lack of exfoliation as well as oil buildup from the hair growing out, but it could be really valuable for a lot of guys if you could recommend some things specific to having some facial hair. Maybe additionally comment on some of the beard care products on the market and which ones you'd consider good/bad, for what use cases, etc. I don't personally ever maintain a beard for more than a month so I've never used oils or balms or anything, but my brother and dad do.
Certainly you look very comfortably between you two, eye contact is fundamental in any type of communication. I love in it. Thank you for be so trusting and honest. I love you and help me a lot. 🥰
I can't concentrate the entire retinol lesson! I wish my skin is as dewey, acne free and blooming as Dr. Maxfield's eyes glued on you, Doc. I see sparkles. Bromance goals. 😁
I’d love to see more videos geared towards us 30+ people! Also, maybe a video with what products you recommend that are on the cleaner side (no parabens, etc).
Can retinoids be used along with vitamin C serum? And please make a whole video about sunscreens and some recommendations. Your videos are very informative and fun to watch, keep it coming!
It can be very irritating. Most retinoids counter act with vitamin C serums. I use my retnoid at night and vitamin c in the day. Make sure to use a good sunscreen. While using a Vitamin C It is a very important step. I learned the hard way. 😆 start using your retnoid slowly and then introduce the vitamin c serum. Hope this helps.
I believe that retinoids can promote the oxidation of vitamin C. This oxidation causes vitamin C to be more irritating and actually can diminish the results you’re looking for from vitamin C. My go-to is vitamin C during the day (it’s in my sun-screen and contributes to the benefits of sun-screen) and retinoid at night.
I read somewhere that you can apply them on alternate nights or like said above, retinol at night and vit c in the morning. Just don't forget your sunscreen🥳
“ I wana look dewey” am I am I dewey yet🤪I have been repeating this phrase every time I check my face in the mirror🥸I need to get this darn phrase out my head Dr Shah😝😝😝
I think you can but try to find a gentle one and start off with only 1 time a week. The neck skin is a LOT THINNER than face skin (other than under the eye) so please be super careful. I would wash your neck, then use a moisturizer while it is wet and then let it dry. Do not use retinoids on wet skin as it can increase irritation and the efficacy is fairly similar. Serious irritation can actually make the issues work so just be careful not to overuse as you skin adjusts. Make sure to wear sunscreen too or your skin can actually end up worse (retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV rays).
I’ve been able to acclimate my neck to 0.05% tretinoin. It took a while and there were times I would have to baby my irritated neck for a week or 2, but now, I can use it nearly every night. Just start slow, 1 night a week for a couple of weeks, then 2 nights (like Monday & Thursday night) for a couple of weeks, then 3 nights, etc, and definitely moisturize heavily.
While we're on that topic, is sunscreen recommended for the neck? Or at least a body sunscreen (because the neck is a lot of extra skin - those sunscreen will run out quickly!) Other topical products?
@@Ophius of sunscreen on all exposed areas ( neck, face, hands) think of a beautiful woman with incredible skin on her face but who has obvious aging signs on her neck. it wouldn't really look great. So don't forget your neck unless you're wearing a think turtle neck knit so I guess that would be fine !!
Multiple questions: 1. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only this has happened to, but applying vaseline reduces colour my lips though I apply a cream and that helps. 2. Opinion on lip plumpers. 3. Can I use salicylic acid with retinoids? 4. What about retinoid toxicity?

I´m literally laughing while watching this video. I love how genuine you guys are in your videos! P.S. I have two questions: 1) if I use Retinoids for anti-aging during my night skincare routine, should I be using something else during the day? I´m 25 and besides treating my dark circles I would like to start taking care of my skin for anti-aging purposes and making my skin look (dewy) good without make-up. 2) could you make a video reviewing/talking about different Retinoids from different brands, for example from The Ordinary?
I am just happy to come across this the way both of talk and explain and also justify the products, research on the products and skin is just awesome doctors who dont scare but actually help completely trust worthy..thank you
Guys, thanks for the great content! Question: can you do a video about safely mixing and spacing active ingredients? I use retinol (Differin), BHA, occasionally AHA, and a vitamin C + hyaluronic acid serum. I usually alternate retinol and BHA at night, use the vitamin C and sunscreen every morning, and take days off from active ingredients. I have sensitive skin and don’t necessarily love the AHA so recs for an alternative would be great. Thanks!

Question: can hyperpigmentation be caused by waxing while using salicylic acid, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and vit-c? (Not retinols) If so, would integrating a retinol in the routine help fix it?
New subscriber and fellow esthetician 💜 love the Bromance 👯♂️ for sure. Great friendship never dies. Truly appreciate the great content and best information on the plant about skin👊🏾
I'm so happy I found your channel! Could you do a video on what ingredients to avoid using in conjunction with a retinol? I just started using salicylic acid (which I love!) and want to start incorporating a retinol into my routine, however, I'm not sure if I should alternate them nightly (e.g., salicylic acid night 1, retinol night 2 ....), or include more of a gap (e.g., salicylic acid night 1, neither night 2, retinol night 3....).
Coconut oil plus activated charcoal - miracle whitening and maintenance but coffee is still going to decrease the white you can achieve if you can’t stop drinking it.
Thanks for all you guys and your team do to put this content together and share it. Back when I was a teen I thought "skincare" was all about those exfoliating cleansers. I've never actually had bad acne, just the occasional pimple cluster in my t-zone and some breakouts on my chest, but somehow I got the message that THAT was terrible acne and the way to fix it was to scrub it off my face XD. Well, the kinds of products marketed to teenagers back in the early 2000s were extremely drying and irritating to me (shocker). So I tried it for like a month, hated it, and have just used bar soap and lotion since. (In my defense, the bar soap was moisturizing and had shea butter in it!) I turned 30 this year, and completely by accident, have developed a hyper-fixation on skincare. I'm really enjoying treating my skin well and this channel has done a lot to help me sort through all of the information and viral "hacks" that are out there. I've been slowly trying new things and adding a retinoid is the next thing I intend to tackle. TLDR: Thanks again for answering all of these questions! Until recently, I thought retinal was only about anti-aging and was kinda scared of it since I've heard that it was also irritating to sensitive skin. But these kinds of videos have really helped re-educate me! I'll try not to be too discouraged at the "disaster" that is waiting to start retinal until I'm 30. ;)
If you’re using other active ingredients like niacinamide, HA, lactic acid 5% and BHA, would it be too much to add retinol into your skin care routine? I have dry/dehydrated and sensitive skin.
HA and Niacinamide don't interfere with retinoids, you can basically use it at the same time. For the exfoliators I'm not sure, there is conflicting information. I use a low concentration retinol 0.3% daily and often pair it with 2% BHA or LHA and never had issues with my dry/sensitive skin. Don't know about higher concentrations though.

@@abhisimabhowmick2968 lol! I'm fine. I think I had simply overdone it on one of the products. I haven''t had a problem since I skimmed through several of the videos and discovered I was likely using a bit too much.
@@EnteredLetters what products did you buy? Because I have sensitive skin so im confused whether I should buy alpha arbutin Or salicylic acid
Dr. Attentive has the best natural smolder; he prolly smolders in his sleep. And Dr. Happy has the best fake smolder. You snapped that smolder so effectively that I was trying to remember what movie you were in. Both of your smiles are beautiful. Keep up the good work boys!
Omg these two! Automatically a new favorite channel!
Thank you Mikayla! We REALLY appreciate the support :)
Same my favourite, favourite UA-cam channel as well Hello 👋from Canada 🇨🇦❤️🫶🤗🧴👐🏼🧼😊😊 @Docterly
Would love to see pregnancy safe tips/products for anti-aging. I get growing a baby but I still care about my skin!
You two are completely adorable... and my skin benefits greatly from your “bro”mance! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you Jaime!!
The interaction between you two is priceless!!! After a year of adapalene I finally got tretinion yesterday 🎉
Maxfied definitely does a smolder 😂😂 it’s actually quite handsome. He’s either smiling nonstop or doing the smolder. Never an in between lol
Yes, please!! Pregnancy skin and hair care video 👏 that’s something that keeps me up at night and most dermatologists I’ve seen just tell me “there’s nothing you can do about it...put on coconut oil”
Thanks for the video! I like how you guys provide helpful professional information while still showing your fun sides.
Exactly they make skincare fun
Anybody else need to go back and rewatch the informational part of the video because you’re too distracted by the beautiful smiles? 😍
Just me? Okay.
How does Dr Shah not fall in love when Dr Maxfield looks at him like that ? 🥺
They're straight
Derm Arn definitely plus they are both married hahahaha
@Jacob JAG what makes u say that , he is married + has a wife who u see on his Tik toks
@Jacob JAG they are both married not just him
@Jacob JAG ARE YOU FOR REAL? LABELING HIM AS SUCH IS SO RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL.
Ur chemistry is so refreshing! Wow ! U brought smiles to ur viewers. Have a nice day to both😉
Loving the bromance !! 😂 you make me laugh whilst getting to learn! Awesome thank you 😊
I just want to thank the both of you for these really informative videos! I do not have health insurance so cannot go to the derm but have learned so much about skincare from you!
Great observation the doctors should take up people who don't have insurance what they can do for certain skin conditions
I came for the expert advice and stayed for the smoulders! You two rock and I look forward to your next vids. Thank you from Paris, France 🇫🇷
I just started using it and I’m 42. Similar to you though, I don’t have many wrinkles. I’m fortunate.
I started tretinoin few months before I turned 24. I'm so happy I discovered it earlier. 💕
lol
I’d love to see more videos geared towards us 30+ people! Also, maybe a video with what products you recommend that are on the cleaner side (no parabens, etc).
Thank you for the information and time that you give us, straight to the point while being funny 😂
Thank you Asia!
So good to hear two professionals communicate in a human, not textbook way!
Enjoyed the content very much! Bravo Dr.’s!
Can you please give a review about strivectin super c retinol ???
I believe that retinoids can promote the oxidation of vitamin C. This oxidation causes vitamin C to be more irritating and actually can diminish the results you’re looking for from vitamin C. My go-to is vitamin C during the day (it’s in my sun-screen and contributes to the benefits of sun-screen) and retinoid at night.
I read somewhere that you can apply them on alternate nights or like said above, retinol at night and vit c in the morning. Just don't forget your sunscreen🥳
We can use a derivative of Vit C such as tetrahexydecyl ascorbate rather than ascorbic acid. Both can be used together at night.
So so grateful for this channel and you guys! I'm learning so much that I've been desperately wanting to know for years 💗
“ I wana look dewey” am I am I dewey yet🤪I have been repeating this phrase every time I check my face in the mirror🥸I need to get this darn phrase out my head Dr Shah😝😝😝

Dr. Mayfield, I didn’t start using retinol until I was in my mid 40’s and it wasn’t a disaster.
Depends on the maturity of the skin

I only see you two have real chemistry, friendship and love , looking good guys, keep it up !😊
Should we put a retinoid on our neck as well for anti-aging?
Or at least a body sunscreen (because the neck is a lot of extra skin - those sunscreen will run out quickly!)
Other topical products?
@@Ophius of sunscreen on all exposed areas ( neck, face, hands) think of a beautiful woman with incredible skin on her face but who has obvious aging signs on her neck. it wouldn't really look great. So don't forget your neck unless you're wearing a think turtle neck knit so I guess that would be fine !!
@@Lvmykidos2 heey did the tretinoin reduce any hyperpigmentation if you had any??
Multiple questions:
1. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only this has happened to, but applying vaseline reduces colour my lips though I apply a cream and that helps. 2. Opinion on lip plumpers.
3. Can I use salicylic acid with retinoids?
4. What about retinoid toxicity?
Idk if this is a dumb question but when should you visit a dermatologist vs an aesthetician!? 💜 love your channel!
You two have such an amazing chemistry, will look amazing as couple ❤
Yes Dr. Shah is always smiling then there’s Dr. Maxfield smoldering but we are not complaining though HAHAHAHAHA
Guys I predict you are going to get VERY popular, it will be your personalities that will do it for you...DONT get too serious...your charm is what you have that is special. I watch Dr. Dray, Dr Lim and others but you two are just TOO much fun as well as givingngood info..newly subscribed.

Watching you two is entertaining and addictive.
Also, please do a video on shaving-I get redness and irritation every time, I’ve tried every razor under the sun and still no bueno
I've recently started using a body oil on my legs before I shave and I find it helps the razor glide. I'm not sure if that will help, but maybe if you have some you can see if it makes some difference.
Maxwell smolders more. I watch all the time; never comment but have to say love you guys! Dr J
Ahh you guys are just too cute, extremely informative but my gosh ohhh so cute 🥰😘
I'm so glad I found about you guys 🤩 I'm 34 and I'm just starting with my retinoid & exfoliation routine after watching your videos...
I just discovered your videos. I'm 52 and started an anti-aging skin care regimen about 9 months ago. I love your videos! They are entertaining and instructional. I've already learned a lot. BTW, how many marriage proposals have you had since starting these videos?
I really appreciate how informative, evidence based, well structured and entertaining you two make these videos. I’m from Germany and I don’t have any issues to understand the videos. They are so helpful to me - thank you very much!
I would love to see the teasered video for skincare in pregnancy and also a video for sunscreen for acne prone, oily and sensitive skin. I have serious troubles to find a tolerable sunscreen…
ya'll are just work husbands and its adorable! You both have eyes for eachother 😂 Dr.Shah does it too but maybe Dr.Maxfield does it a tad bit more
Glad to find this channel. Vault of great information here. Just turned 51 so it's about time to start paying more attention to skin. Have been quite lucky that up until now have not really needed to do much at all. Now stepping it up and just tried a retinol for the first time. Subscribed.

Omg thank you for answering my question! I really do appreciate it ❤️
Im just thinking about it. Here it comes
Love to watch both of you smolder! 🙂🙂🙂😊😊
Thanks!
You guys are amazing! I am watching you from Canada!Thank you so much for your videos I feel I am much more educated on skin care by watching your content! And it’s a loooot of fun watching you both interacting 😊! You are the best!!!
OMG I’m a disaster! Started using a retinoids in my 50’s ... more than a dozen years ago. File it under better late than never :)
Watching you is just enough. You are too handsome to be glued at you both. Love you!!!
Question: can hyperpigmentation be caused by waxing while using salicylic acid, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and vit-c? (Not retinols) If so, would integrating a retinol in the routine help fix it?
you guys are hilarious- AND super helpful and informtive! keep the videos coming!

Dr. Maxfield don’t give me that look again! I’m melting 😅🤭 you guy’s giving a helpful tips to us, new subscriber here 👍🏻 keep it up 👍🏻 be safe 😘

Plus White toothpaste has helped me, but I hear you!
I know!!! I can’t stop staring at their teef lol. Such goals

(In my defense, the bar soap was moisturizing and had shea butter in it!)
I turned 30 this year, and completely by accident, have developed a hyper-fixation on skincare.
Don't use them at the same time, alternate.
