Rick Springfield was huge in the `80s...singer, Soap Opera TV star on General Hospital, made one movie "Hard To Hold". A really good musician...great guitarist & piano player. Another hit was "Don`t Talk To Strangers" & "Human Touch"...and a really nice song he wrote after his father passed "My Father`s Chair". Also, you really should watch the video of the actual performers. You are missing out when you just watch the words scroll by.

Rick Springfield is in my opinion, a tremendously under rated guitarist. This song is terrific! It tells a story that I believe a lot of guys can easily relate to. Wishes are great to have, but they all too infrequently come true.

I was in 6th grade when this came out. Rick Springfield was "Dr. Noah Drake" on General Hospital at the time. He had tons of hit songs after this one, but Jesse's Girl is his most famous. Cheers!

Saw him play at Epcot two nights ago. Fantastic concert. The highlights were Jessie's Girl (of course), Wild Thing (a great cover of The Troggs), and a tropical downpour that flooded Epcot. He has incredible youthful energy. You'd never guess that he's 72 years old.

Back in the day Rick Springfield was my favorite, ok, he still is! 😂 I was able to see him in concert in 1984 when I was 15, 4th row from the stage (be still my teenage heart 🥰😂) I’ve seen him several times as an adult. I wasn’t a Rick Springfield fan back in the day mostly because he was a heartthrob for all the teenage girls. Every girl had his poster on the wall including my gf. I thought I was too cool for that. However, as I got older and revisited his music I discovered what a great guitarist and songwriter he was. It also didn’t hurt that his biggest hit, “I’ve done everything for you” was a Sammy Hagar cover

…and for all those who hear this song and say Rick is doing his friend dirty…Bullshit…this is about the age old situation in which school buddies had the hots for the same girl [or even guy]…just about every group of friends (guys or girls) faced the experience of wanting the same popular hot girl or guy in school. If one of your friends landed them, would you stop wishing you had landed them? No. Just don’t undercut your friend or try snake away the girl or guy - no worries.
Always has been a popular tune…great beat and riff. Still super popular with cover bands at street festivals and weddings, etc.

I remember going to see Rick in the early 2000’s, forced my husband to go with me and I’ll never forget the VERY elderly lady reaching up to tug on my husband’s sleeve to ask if he would take a picture for her. As he raised her camera she piped up “Aim for the crotch “🤣🤣🤣

Rick Springfield was an actor on General Hospital back then and his facial expressions during this video are extreme! Rick Springfield was a recording artist and an actor. He played Dr. Noah Drake in General Hospital and Nick Knight a Vampire who is a police detective looking for a pair of magic goblets that can make him human again. But he got his start as a cartoon version of himself in a spin off from The Brady Kids called “Mission: Magic!” Where a magical school teacher takes an after school group called The Adventurers Club on wild and wacky adventures in other worlds beyond the blackboard with Springfield singing a tune related to the theme at some point in the adventure while helping Miss Tickle and the kids solve some problem or crime with the help of a magic cat and an owl.
When I was 16, I wished I was Rick's girl. I saw him in concert my senior year of high school and during the song "Affair of the Heart " he jumped on a huge speaker, grabbed my hand, and sang "Don't try to tell me it's physical. It goes much deeper than that." Pretty sure I tried not to wash my hand for a week.
Looking back, it was a really creepy thing to sing to a 16 year old!

Jessie's Girl is kind of a guilty pleasure for me as an 80s teenager & it's the only one you'll typically hear on the radio, usually on a vintage station or during "Greatest Hits" countdowns. But he's got plenty of good music that deserves more attention. Affair of the Heart & Human Touch are two of my favorites. And yes...eye candy. I had no use for soap operas normally, but Dr Noah Drake was swoon worthy. 😍

This was a huge hit in the early 80s. Rick Springfield played Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital in the early 80s and left to pursue his music career. Jesse's Girl was his big hit. I was a kid, but heard it everywhere--the carnival, the skating rink, etc. But I never thought about the lyrics because I was just a kid. I liked the song a lot, but this is the first time I read the lyrics--watching your video.
I was so in love with him in the 80s. I was a senior in high school when it came out. Then he started playing Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital that summer after the song came out. We fell more and more in love with him.

It is crazy that hardly anyone talks about the fact that he's Australian and its obvious, as he's still got his accent. I also wonder how many of his army of female fans have gone back to research the bands he was in back in Australia. I can't believe how good the rock version of the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby is that his band Zoot made back in the 70's when he was younger and just playing lead guitar.

I remember a funny SNL skit of this song where "Rick" was singing this with a guitar and the beginning started out the same but as the camera panned out, you see that he's wearing a dress as the chorus kicks in with "I wish that I WAS Jesse's girl..." Made me laugh at the time. Would be normal for today though.

always loved this song! 40 years later some interpret the lyrics as creepy or stalker-ish, but it's meant more as falling for someone whom you can't tell how you feel, and the heartbreak because of it.
also: that sweet guitar solo at the end is actually neil giraldo, married to and lead guitarist for pat benatar.
