    While I was out with my GF on my first bike (84 suzuki TS 185 ER) we stopped in at a coffee shop. While there an older gentleman sat at a nearby table. Seeing our helmets he started talking to us. Normally I would forget people's names straight away, but I ran into him a couple of weeks later and instantly remembered his name and called out. We became very good friends over the next 25 years. Sadly he passed away last year at the age of 88, and yes, he was still riding. That day in the coffee shop is one of the best memories I have of that bike, because it sparked our friendship.

But after a similar "bee in the helmet" experience and getting pegged in the face from a rock kicked up by a truck a little ways ahead, I now keep the shield at least mostly if not fully closed over 40 mph. Oh - and having a lit cigarette butt flicked from a car going in the opposite direction bouncing off my goggles when I was wearing my MX style helmet. That could have been really bad.

I was instinctively throwing the shield up at every stop and plopping it back down around 25-35 mph and I didn't realize my pillion was just riding the whole time shields down. No wonder she thought motorcycles suck and are too hot. Tell your damn pillion about the faceshield rule! I will never forget again.

    Honestly, with about 3-4 years experience with bikes I've learned to diagnose most simple problems just by trying to start a vehicle, including cars. It's amazing how simple most things are and I've gotten some good deals because of dead batteries and dirty fuel systems. I recommend everybody do the basic maintenance on their vehicles because not only will it save a lot of money on repairs, think $50 for loosening a bolt and refilling some liquids, but it can also turn a really good profit when somebody thinks that their car is totaled because they let it sit and the battery died so they sell you a car for $200 and you put a used battery in it for less than $50 and now you have a perfectly running vehicle for less than $300... It really pays to know how to check air, fuel and spark.

    I recently bought a Scorpion brand helmet. Average review for safety at the Sharp web site for independent safety tests, but it fits well and the price was good. It has a little lever on the left side to open the visor a small bit for ventilation, and one D ring has a piece of nylon strap hanging so it is easier to undo under your neck.

    Face shield rules: get pin lock! Put some treatment on your glasses, otherwise your pin lock is useless (ask me how I know...!), keep it closed or you will kiss a bee or other nasty bugs (again, how do I know?), modular helmets are great imho.
    Help others. I once plugged a flat tire for a women stuck on the side of the road, she had been there 2 hours I was the first to stop!
    Carry plugs with you and a basic tools kit, at least on long rides. Zip ties are life savers!

      i am newish rider, just ordered my first time pinlock, coz here in australia is never really cold, but this winter (its winter here) i am finishing late late at work and the face shield fogs out 2 out of 3 rides i did last week. so i order a pinlock. what do you mean about "put some treatment on your glasses"?

      Agustin Morquecho anti fog treatment on your lenses. Pin lock is nice, but if the glasses fog up, you are no better off.
      One time I was on the highway, and my glasses were fogging up. I could not stop (too dangerous in the rain and poor visibility) and could not put my glasses in my pockets since I had my rain coat on. So I drove 20 minutes with my glasses in my mouth, to the next exit :)

    Video idea: is it safer to go a bit faster than traffic?

    • @christianmcdowell3052
      @christianmcdowell3052 5 років тому +3

      I would stay this stands true if you are currently close to other vehicles. However if a block of traffic is in front of you, I imagine it would be safest to maintain distance until they have spread or stopped. (California here)

    • @Robnoxious77
      @Robnoxious77 5 років тому +2

      I call it “applying positive pressure to traffic”

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir 5 років тому +1

      The answer is yes. No further videos needed, but of course it would be a welcome topic :)
      Going a bit faster means you are never stuck in one spot or situation, and you are always looking out for your surroundings rather than just mindlessly following the traffic flow. Anything that helps your awareness is a major improvement in safety, as it makes you look further ahead and assess clear spaces on the road and merging cars etc. If all you do is follow traffic flow, you end up jus sheeping behind the guy in front of you, and you might lose your awareness, and other people might lose their awareness of your existence too. Better to be in and out of people's awareness span quickly. If you stay in one spot for too long, people tend to forget you are even there, and stop paying attention. You only have a short window where people are aware of your presence before you just become a part of the surroundings, so use that window to quickly flow through the traffic instead of staying in place.
