      It's an Italian opera I'm sure they took some license with the staging.

      They are not in the room in this scene. They were out picking flowers

      According to the libretto,
      Suzuki is in the garden and Butterfly is in the room.
      They scatter flowers in the room.

      @@marimarihosp3035 since when these days the staging ever adheres to the libretto? did you not see the T&I set in the Paris subway?

      1:17 Chocho-san and Suzuki "seiza / sit properly" on the floor without taking off their sandals. People in Japan don't do that. And the sleeves of her kimono are too long for a maid. Kimono with furisode (long sleeves) is formal attire for a young unmarried woman.
