"I would scream just to be heard As if yelling at the stars I was bleeding just to feel You would never say a word Kept me reaching in the dark Always something to conceal" Those lyrics strike particular close to my heart. I tear up every time I hear them. Its unrequited love.
When James vocals are working well, he's capable of delivering some extraordinarily moving and soulful performances. His vocals here are fantastic and on the studio version of course, just stunning. One of my favourite vocal performances by LaBrie is actually years ago on the 2000 live DVD of "Metropolis 2000", specifically on "A Change of Seasons".
I think he does really well with soft and moving vocals like the ones present in this song. I think he has issues when he gets loud and high in his vocal range. He hurt is voice pretty bad early on in their career by both using some unhealthy techniques and also I believe he got sick at one point and kept singing against his doctor's wishes when he was supposed to be on vocal rest. He's never sounded quite the same since.
My father died 5 years ago, and this was one of his favorite songs. Great performance. If he was alive, he'd enjoy it a lot. This way I carry the torch, and you guys definitely nailed it. Best regards from Croatia ❤️
This song is special to me, I tried to bury a person who was very important to me, she tries to recover our relationship but I refuse trying to avoid the pain, 2 months had passed and I still miss her. a few weeks ago I listen this song and I understand, I was wrong. Today I'm recovering a relationship with a girl who is very important to me. Thank you so much dream theater.
I went through the same experience. The girl I love broke my heart, and we were not talking for about 2 weeks.. she were trying to recover our relationship, and I'm also refused. But I'm trying to open a new page of my life and forgive her of what she did to me. We're now rebuilding our relationship as a friend, a good friend. I guess that being a friend and forgetting what has happened makes us stronger to see what lies ahead.
This band touches my soul every single time i hear them live. James Labrie is an amazing Tenor, saw them live twice, what an experience my Friends !!!!!
Saw this live with my wife on the DTOE Tour. Always loved this song but never knew why. My wife left me over a month ago because my issues were destroying our life together. I now hear this and can't help but hear my wife's voice in James' voice singing to me. I want to do anything to fix our relationship and live out a happy life. Perhaps one of the most gut wrenching DT songs ever...
The most beautiful song about letting someone go.. Yes let the love die with the dignity it deserves.. Its been 4 years I've been coming back to this video.. And please keep reminding me to watch this video
Anyone who thinks A Dramatic Turn of Events is boring must have been dropped as a kid. This song is utterly gorgeous and stands proudly in the same league with material from Images and Words, Awake and SDOIT.
LIRIK Is there ever really a right time You had led me to believe Someday you'd be there for me When the stars above aligned When you weren't so consumed I kept looking for the clues So I waited in the shadows of my heart And still the time was never right Until one day I stopped caring And began to forget why I longed to be so close And I disappeared into the darkness And the darkness turned to pain And never went away Until all that remained Was buried deep beneath the surface A shell of what things could have been Tired bones beneath a veil Of guarded secrets all too frail Sad to think I never knew You were searching for the words For the moment to emerge Yet the moment never came You couldn't risk my fragile frame Until one day you stopped caring And began to forget why you tried to be so close And you disappeared into the darkness And the darkness turned to pain And never went away Until all that remained Was buried deep beneath the surface I would scream just to be heard As if yelling at the stars I was bleeding just to feel You would never say a word Kept me reaching in the dark Always something to conceal Until one day I stopped caring And began to forget why I longed to be so close And I disappeared into the darkness And the darkness turned to pain And never went away Until all that remained Was buried deep beneath the surface
I can't believe I never listened to this group till now...heard of them but never really took the time.. Amazing...i had to sit down when I first heard this song...then played it 25 times.....phenominal talent
I can't really understand (and maybe it's my fault) critics about newest DT (after Portnoy) being sellouts or doing predictable commercial songs. This is nothing of that. A band can't be making concept albums and psychological songs all their career. A differently spiritual song with music and voice at these levels, to me, is a masterpiece as well. I personally never thought that a song is good ONLY if it's 8+ minutes, or if it's part of a big ensemble, or if it necessairly has jazz elements.
Best album they've done since the early days of Images and Words, Awake, and Falling into Infinity...not that the other ones are bad at all. They are all amazing. But this song and this album caught that deep magic again. I hear so many iconic bands from the past in their songs(kansas, Metallica, pink floyd, Yes, Rush, queensryche, etc)....truly they are one of the best bands ever.
I'm often struggling with listing to LaBries singing especially when he tries to sing the older songs which do not fit his voice anymore. But here it's just perfect and beautiful. I think the band should take more into account that his Voice has gotten older and also has changed in "colour", and consider this in writing new songs. Still looking forward for the new album with Portnoy though :)
Beneath the surface and Far from heaven, both songs perfectly exemplify -at least to me- how it feels like most of the times to live as an Autistic person. Thank you, Dream Theater.
I recently went thought a heartbreaking situation where a girl Id known most of my life had been talking to me and helping me through a dark time, a time when i sadly hung myself and was sectioned. She continued to keep me company and i felt genuine love. We called ourselves soulmates as we could talk about anything. We felt connected. One day, she disappeared. This song, for me, is that...
My favorite DT ballad. A Dramatic Turn Of Events is a masterpiece in my opinion.
+1. Great stuff, underrated by some "true fans". This song is as great as "Silent Man", the same feeling.
4 years too late but for sure! A Dramatic Turn Of Events, SFAM and Images and Words are my favorite albums!
@@hypemall got the luna blu ray! And indeed silent man is a great song, but lyrically i feel beneath the surface is better!
@@webjrnstennes3895 please don't forget Awake
I love every song from ADTOE
Dream theater is a prove that Metal band can also makes someone cry
i think metal bands actually made some of the best emotional and melodic riffs and solos
Alone. World shut out. Headphones. This song. I'm closer to Heaven.
Cant be more accurate
I just cried for this song and now for your comment... wonderful description, I'm totally agree. I send you a big hug. ^_^
Alone. World shut out. Headphones. 2 previous songs. I'm Far From Heaven.
I will play it again with headphones 😊.
Good idea.
Really absolutely the same for me 😢.
When it got to this song, I'm not ashamed to say I cried. It was so beautifully done and James showed his range as a vocalist.
"I would scream just to be heard
As if yelling at the stars
I was bleeding just to feel
You would never say a word
Kept me reaching in the dark
Always something to conceal"
Those lyrics strike particular close to my heart. I tear up every time I hear them. Its unrequited love.
I cried just reading them
when i heard this song for the first time i had to stop what i was doing and take a deep breather...
+liza rai keep breathing sugar...
oh !,!!! a nepalese girl listening to dream theater !!!!!! surprised me !!!!! you'r in the right section of music !!!
And people say James can't sing. Very very moving vocals
When James vocals are working well, he's capable of delivering some extraordinarily moving and soulful performances. His vocals here are fantastic and on the studio version of course, just stunning. He's never sounded quite the same since.
He is an incredible performer
He’s a terrible frontman. Some of his singing is now so bad that it is embarrassing and so sad to see his decline.
This is my favourite James live performance, what a touching song
My father died 5 years ago, and this was one of his favorite songs. Great performance. If he was alive, he'd enjoy it a lot. This way I carry the torch, and you guys definitely nailed it. Best regards from Croatia ❤️

Thank you so much dream theater.
You tried to bury her? Did you kill her or? ;)
Very well said Riccardo :))
my dream song
im on that position today, but she doesnt want to recover our relationship, but this song is still great
I went through the same experience. The girl I love broke my heart, and we were not talking for about 2 weeks.. she were trying to recover our relationship, and I'm also refused. Damn, the ending was really so powerful , Labrie's voice still rocks :)
LaBries voice will always rock my friend :)
+Fanis H LaBrie will always be cheesy, because he is LaBRIE :-)
+Sam Philips thanks for the dumb comment.
+Berk Uzdoğan ok
DreamTheater is a complete band! Awesome musicians with incredible technique and feeling.
Carlos H. Cantu - don't forget the message in their songs... speaks to ones soul,
4:25 - 4:58 : that's a powerful voice right there
Exactly hes has gotten his voice back the last two tours ive seen them he has been fantastic
Gave me goosebumps. Such an amazing song.

@joshuastam7704 yes really go outside loser
This band touches my soul every single time i hear them live.
James Labrie is an amazing Tenor, saw them live twice, what an experience my Friends !!!!!
wow just amazing at the end for mr jabrie he is my true inspiration and gets me through the bad days in my life
I think this version is better than the one on the album, the section where LaBrie belts it, it just sounds much more sincere here. Love it.
LaBrie is absolutely over the top! Killer!!!

4:25 That was just messed up amazing!
So amazed that the part of the song, 4:26 and beyond, was perfectly sang by James.
Anyone who thinks A Dramatic Turn of Events is boring must have been dropped as a kid. This song is utterly gorgeous and stands proudly in the same league with material from Images and Words, Awake and SDOIT.
watching on utube but still buy the DVD, DT's Fan should do this

LIRIK
Is there ever really a right time
You had led me to believe
Someday you'd be there for me
When the stars above aligned
When you weren't so consumed
I kept looking for the clues
So I waited in the shadows of my heart
And still the time was never right
Until one day I stopped caring
And began to forget why I longed to be so close
And I disappeared into the darkness
And the darkness turned to pain
And never went away
Until all that remained
Was buried deep beneath the surface
A shell of what things could have been
Tired bones beneath a veil
Of guarded secrets all too frail
Sad to think I never knew
You were searching for the words
For the moment to emerge
Yet the moment never came
You couldn't risk my fragile frame
Until one day you stopped caring
And began to forget why you tried to be so close
And you disappeared into the darkness
And the darkness turned to pain
And never went away
Until all that remained
Was buried deep beneath the surface
I would scream just to be heard
As if yelling at the stars
I was bleeding just to feel
You would never say a word
Kept me reaching in the dark
Always something to conceal
Until one day I stopped caring
And began to forget why I longed to be so close
And I disappeared into the darkness
And the darkness turned to pain
And never went away
Until all that remained
Was buried deep beneath the surface
