  • The Ringers Bill Simmons thinks that Joel Embiid is now BETTER than Prime Shaq!!
Simmons points out an interesting comparison: In 2000, Shaquille O’Neal scored an average of 29.7 points per game during his MVP season. Now, Embiid is doing even better by getting over 35 points each game. The tiny difference is in Embiid’s better free-throw shooting. For Simmons, this makes him a better player than the famous Shaq.

As long as Embiid's numbers drop during the play-offs he is not in Shaq's class. It really seemed in past seasons that teams allow Embiid going berserk during regular season and then stifle him during the play-offs with defensive schemes he can't handle.

If Prime Shaq and Prime Embiid matched up against each other, Shaq would put up 45 points, 17 rebounds, and 3 poster dunks on Embiid in 3 quarters. Embiid would have 15 points, 4 rebounds, and ejected in 3 quarters. Also, Shaq puts up 25 points while being guarded by the weak Mo Bamba in the 4th quarter.
To summarize it, Shaq puts up 70 points.

Ppl always talk about Joel “shrinking” in the playoffs but people always leave out context. No one talks about him missing a game or more than one in legit every playoffs due to injury other than 2020. Torn meniscus, sprained MCL, fractured orbital bone, a fracture in his fucking skull. Everyone’s stats lower with THOSE injuries. I’m not ready to say Embiid is better than Shaq yet, but he has the potential to be.

I grew up in Orlando, I was 17 when the Magic drafted Shaq. I watched him live at many games, his brute force, power and athleticism is just incomparable to any player since him. On offense, Embiid is much more polished individually with his ball handling and shooting, but his effect on the team's offense isn't close to Shaq.
Shaq was so powerful physically that the opposing team's defense would collapse trying to defend him, creating wide open 3 pointers on double-teams, and if you didn't double him, he would just spin and dunk on anyone. His effect on defense was similar because of how much space he filled in the paint, causing opponents to alter shots or get blocked. His ability to erase mistakes by perimeter players, allowed them to take chances on defense, creating many fast breaks on steals.

Embiid is a more talented & skilled player than peak Shaquille. He’s NOWHERE NEAR as dominate a force ESPECIALLY in ANY playoff he’s been in, as peak championship winning Shaq. Shaq ROSE in the playoffs. Embiid seems to shrink. The fact that this doesn’t stop Bill from getting carried away with overhyping Embiid’s usual regular season dominance, is almost disappointing given Bill’s almost lifetime experience with the game.

Shaq was paired with a player who is more than likely the second or third best player to have ever lived. Please, please, please make the justification that having Ben Simmons scrub ass is the same as having Kobe. Embid has also unfortunately had a string of bad luck. He got elbowed one year and came back with a fractured face, he tore his meniscus another season, etc. You can hate on Embid all you want but he’s a monster and he keeps getting better year after year. Shaq never rounded out his game, never conditioned himself, and became a liability on defense by the time he was 30.

@@jasonwilliams3789 He didn't have Ben Simmons the last 2 seasons, and it still ended before the conference finals. What player is 100% or in many cases, close to it at a certain point in the playoffs? I'm not hatin on Embiid. I'm just not cool with moving him ahead of a 4X NBA champion and 3X finals MVP who even with whatever limitations he did have in his skill set, was still at his peak, the most dominant force the league has EVER seen this side of Wilt Chamberlain. Embiid needs to prove he can take a team to a title as the unquestioned #1 just like any other all-time great big man, including 2 in his own era who've already proven this, Jokic and Giannis.

Some fun Joel Embiid playoff facts:
The best team he's beaten in the playoffs is the 2022 5th seed Raptors led by Siakam and FVV
He averages 22 PPG on 49.2% TS in elimination games(a 9 game sample size)
In NO playoff run has he ever averaged more assists than turnovers
He is the ONLY MVP in league history to never make the conference finals
This year, he had the biggest PPG drop from the RS to the playoffs of any MVP winning season
He turned the ball over 8 times in back to back elimination games against the Hawks in 2021
He's shot under 20% from three over his last two playoff runs
He had a worse eFG% than Russell Westbrook during the 2023 playoffs
With a chance to go up 3-1, Joel Embiid went 0-12 in the second half against the 5 seeded Hawks in game 4, including missing a wide open layup to take the lead
He got stripped by Danilo Gallnari to seal the loss in game 7
Down 3 in game 5 of the same series with 15 seconds left, he missed BOTH free throws to seal the game
All of his offensive numbers(PPG, RPG, APG, TOs, FG%, 3P%, FT%) are worse in the playoffs than in the regular season aside from FT%
He has only won ONE playoff series in his career where he played in all four wins(2022 vs. Toronto)
He is 0-3 in game 7s and has posted a 49% TS and 5.3 TOs a game in those 3 games
He once got swept in a series despite averaging FIFTEEN free throws per game(2020 vs. Boston)
Over the last two seasons, he has a 9.2 BPM in the regular season(box plus minus) and a 1.0 BPM in the playoffs
WORST OF ALL: HE IS 9/38 IN CLUTCH(within 5 points, last 5 minutes by NBA definition) SITUATIONS DURING HIS PLAYOFF CAREER, WITH AN UNFATHOMABLE TS% of 35.7%

I am a lifelong Sixers fan but, Simmons is always good for a hot take. Joel has more talent than Shaq, I don't think anyone would disagree. However, Joel is not better than Shaq at the moment. He needs to have consistency for a longer period. Shaq was completely unstoppable and if he hit free-throws he would have averaged 30+. If Joel can put this run together for the rest of the year then I would agree. Being this dominant for the first 3 months of a given season. This is the first year he is really dominating. He is driving and finishing with dunks for the first time this December. Ninety-nine times he puts up a soft lay-up which is miss sometimes or he misses because he is fouled. People literally try to block his layups. NOBODY tried to block Shaq 5 feet from the rim. Embiid can get that same respect. But I think he is trying not to put that much ware on his body.

Hard to say. The game and the rules have changed so much since Shaq played. Things to consider: Illegal defense (i.e. Shaq couldn't be double teamed until he got the ball), backing down a player, there's so much more offensive skill in the game now that you can't just have two stars and a bunch of defensive specialists, more rules now to limit physical play and fouling, players are bigger, faster and longer now.

I don’t think Joel is better then Shaq at this point in time. But he is a better more versatile scorer. Also, Joel isn’t “settling” for long jumpers. He is shooting 60% for 15-19ft. For perspective, That is on par and even slightly better than KD’s highest percentage from that range. And running the offense from top of key allows him to facilitate the ball and avoid the double teams he gets in the post. Not to mention, post scoring takes a lot of energy which would greatly fatigue a scorer shooting the volume Embiid shoots. And for an injury prone player like Embiid, being fatigued is when most injuries occur.

Teams would have to throw low contact triple teams at him and the moment you go from double to triple team there is a guy like Dennis Scott just setting their feet and measuring better than anything else in the nba . Shaq probably wouldn’t get the assist because most apg in that situation are hockey assists but his gravity would cause it. He will always be my what if player. It’s also worth considering once a player is 80% from free throw there can develop a jumper too .

i think we are getting caught up and we have to look at word choice here....
he said he thinks embiid is a better player than prime shaq... a tall task but as he broke it down his argument is valid...
embiid may be a better player than him when you consider his skill set and production..
hes just as dominant of an inside scorer as shaq.. for his career embiid is 74% from 0-3 from the basket...
and shaq is also 74% from this range the difference lies in the amount of shots they take from this range...
embiid only takes around 28% of his shots from this distance while shaq is at 51% with another 40+% within 10feet... meaning shaq 90% of his attempts came from inside the paint... while for embiid its barely half...
well that jus comes down to what you like
cuz the stats will tell you that shaq career TS% is 58.4% while embiid is higher at 61.4%...
meaning embiid production as a scorer is overall more efficient...
and yes for the time being shaq does have the ring count...
but shaq didnt win his first chip till year 8 with an up and coming kobe bryant..
embiid is currently in year 8 with an up and coming tyreese maxey... not saying maxey is kobe... but his role on the team is very similar.. minus some defensive responsibility...
the only problem is 1) will embiid stay healthy and 2) the rest of the league is wayyyyyyyyy more talented and balanced than it was back then...
in the east.. embiid has to go through a top tier power forward in giannis similar to shaq going through duncan.. but he also has the celtics to deal with that have been to more conference finals than any team outside of the warriors over the past decade... and look like serious contenders this season...
out west potentially Denver who has someone whos challenging him for best center in the league.. and to some is the best player in the game rn...
those are the major threats right now...
you still have teams like lakers and warriors who look bad now but might make moves at the deadline and have the veteran and championship DNA to make noise in the playoffs....
you have young teams that are out for blood like the thunder, twolves, mavs, and kings....
and then you have the experimental super teams in the clippers and suns that if they somehow manage to string it together come playoff time might just win it all....
so in the east i count 3 power houses in 76ers, celtics and bucks.. out west its really just the nuggets but with about 5-7 teams that potentially could upset some higher seeds...
    todays league is crazy...
from 1999 after jordan retired till 2005 the lakers and spurs won every chip bar 1 in 2004... thats combied thats 6 chips in a 7 year span represented by one conference...
its safe to say the east was trash back then and the lakers only had one team out west to worry about in the spurs cuz they were also uniquely equipped to handle shaq with two of the best big men in duncan and robinson.. twin towers 2.0 if it wasnt for kobe the lakers probably dont make it oast them as shaq struggled...
and my last point would be that shaq before breaking through for his 3 peat..
he was swept out of the playoffs 5 times out of a total 6 playoff appearances... so joel not making it past 2nd round in his first 7 seasons isnt that bad...

Especially when two of the other best big man in the game, Giannis and Jokić, are literally NBA champions and fmvp’s to go with it. @@sports360media It's not disrespect, he has 2 MVPs. But the true center position is about dominance. That's why Russell is never considered the GOAT of Centers and he has 11 rings. Joker is not dominant. I play ball and I would rather go against Joker everyday of the week than Embiid or Shaq. I don't think there is a player in the league who would say different. Joker is like a giant guard and he is great, but he is not dominant.

Diesel all day er day but ya gotta cut Embiid some slack in regards to his perimeter game. Remember, he payed with Ben Si mons for 4 years. Joel HAD to over rely on his perimeter
