Have you heard of Bullgear before? They make RPD box mag inserts that work amazingly well. Not only do they feed well you can now hold even more BBs in the drum mag because of the different configuration. And on top of that it feeds every time pull the trigger. Now for the hop up unit you can also a bullgear hop up for the RPD (It’s the same one as the pkm/m60 one). In conclusion these are pretty good guns once you upgrade them but that goes for most guns though. Almost everything in the gearbox is upgradable too.
Not for the faint of heart How I cured a deathly ill RPD: - Bullgear PKM/ M60 Hop Up (replace spring with O-rings) - Aluminum tape to secure motor and cylinder -Keep stock piston but modify the rack to a 2/3 width to avoid contact with the spur gear - extend the Tappet track on the right half of the shell by drilling to small holes, tapping threads and gluing grub screws. These grub screws effectively prevent the Tappet plate from flexing upwards. This was the biggest issue contributing to misfeeding. - Stock Nozzle, but replace the O-ring so you can actually get a seal - Convert a V2 Tappet plate to be compatible with the RPD. That means the nozzle shelf, and the fin. - Use enhanced Tappet spring - Radius front and rear corners in the shell - Glue a very skinny o-ring to the outside of the cylinder head to occupy the gap between the cylinder and the end of the cylinder window of the shell. Otherwise, your cylinder will shift back/ forth while firing. - Bullgear mag insert (auto feeds) - 2 custom 3D printed parts: - An insert sleeve for the front hole of the gearbox to stabilize the hop up chamber and keep the nozzle concentric to the bucking lip - A shock block that rests between the front of the gearbox and the gold feed block. This absorbs shock, and it prevents the 4 screws that fasten the gearbox to the receiver from cutting out the holes in the receiver. The vibration from the gun firing is constantly pushing that gearbox forward and eventually you will notice that the 4 holes on the bottom of the receiver are no longer circular, and thus they allow the gearbox to move forward, pushing the hop up forward (if using a spring on the hop up), and this misaligns the feed hole of the hop up with respect to the feed hole of the feedblock.

As far as I know at almost any milsim you’d be able to just use AK hi caps with a RPK correct? Cause they’re like 600 rds vs 150 so a much bigger difference then m4.
