The boyfriend/son is just a writing tool required to get them together. thus, the author didn't bother giving him a personality. He's a wet fish. Not masculine, at all. HOWEVER, the women! All of the battling takes place within the discipline of perfect decorum. The mom does not approve of her son dating an American, because "American women do not know how to sacrifice for their families." Granted the mom's choice of sacrifice was decidedly Chinese, specifically Chinese Tycoon. The mom is politely fierce. Direct. No passive aggressiveness. The girlfriend is demure, but eventually shows that feminine and strength exists well together. The girlfriend has a friend who lives in Singapore--a college roommate. The roommate is a loud, brash woman. At first, I thought we'd be subjected to her saying & doing the wrong things at the wrong time. But, no. She was raised to submit to the needs of decorum. Watching her stifle her thoughts was way more funny than having her say awkward, socially inappropriate things, too. All the Boys - This is a teen rom-com that only showed on Netflix. The girl is an introvert. She wants to not be noticed while wishing she had more adventures. She loves her sisters, but never seems to get along with them. She wants to please her parents, but wants to be her own person. Typical teen angst but shown without being sappy or whiny. She is a romantic who wrote love notes to her crushes since she was 11-ish, which she kept. After a fight, her younger sister mails all the letters. Some of these letters are 4-5 years old. Some boys changed. Not only does she not have a crush, but she wouldn't even want to be friends. One was written to a much older crush. To deal with the stress, she stress-bakes! As a baker, I loved this. Movies/tv don't explore the humor of cooking enough, unless it's bad cooking. It was funny. the actual love story that emerges is sweet, too.
@kathyp1563 You would be disappointed to know that the best friend in the book is nothing like in the movie. She is very much a rich surface level but still kind socialite. Also, given she was nouveau rich she wasn't high enough in the chain to know about who the boyfriend's family was and how rich they were. The boyfriend is at least bringing the main girl to Singapore in the movie to propose, while he wasn't trying to do so at all in the book given they were together only 1 year. And the only one advocating for him to tell the truth was his cousin. Lastly, the mother was worse in the book. She litteraly left the country the day her son brought his girlfriend to show everyone that she would never be in the family.
