  • Exploring on bicycle the Formartine and Buchan Way on the closed railway line from Dyce to Peterhead. Old stations and other surviving relics of this line that closed to passengers in 1965. The formation of the railway is still largely intact and is now a path and cycle route, starting from the station car park at Dyce.

Thank you for showing this. I walk on the sections around Ellon every day. Would like to do the whole trip from Dyce one day.

Thanks for your comment. If you get to Dyce there's now a café next to the station.

I sometimes took the train from Mintlaw Station to Peterhead to get to Peterhead Academy when the roads were bad due to snow back in the very early 1960's.

The Maud museum is only open a few days a year. We happened to be passing it once when opened.

You did well! I've never seen it open - although I'm not local. I'm hoping to cycle to Fraserburgh in March so might see it then. Please support the café in Maud as they are very helpful.

Remember the line was originaly to 'Ellon' where it split into two : the Phead + Fburgh line with also a seperate line to Boddam added later to bring granite from Phead to the world

Thhanks for your comment. My film has a caption at around 3.55 mentioning the branch to Boddam.

Great video. I recently walked the whole of the Formatine and Buchan railway and this brought back good memories. If you’re not a member of the Great North of Scotland Railway Association I highly recommend it. Thanks

Thanks - it was a bit rainy on the return leg to Dyce, and the combination of that with fallen autumn leaves meant I had soaking wet feet by the time I got on the train!

Excellent presentation. Looks like they could reinstall the track, as I think has been considered, as nothing has been built along the way to block it. Dyce might need a reroute though, as a chip shop is now in the way. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for your comment. Peterhead is certainly big enough to benefit from the railway again, although the route via Maud is a bit of a dog-leg.

Imagine this, all the platforms were built to accomodate the Q Vic train as she visited all the stations on her holidays. Imagine the expence just so she could wave her hand to all her subjects in those days No wonder the railway never made money 🤣
