    Thank you for this lovely video, for me the best engine sound is a v-twin and I had this opinion before I even knew about cafe racers. When I was younger one of my neighbors had a Ducati Monster, when I first heared that v-twin engine sound I suddenly fell in love. It's been over 20 years and I'm still in love.

    you have treated the subject in a very cultured and refined way.
    I own a Guzzi café and my wife a Dnepr bobber.
    I believe that engine's musicality is a synthesis between the temperament of the motorcycle and that of the biker. It is a perennial search for the maximum approximation according to the personal changes.

    I built the exhaust system on my Jawa 500 R single cafe racer from scratch, using a bit of mathematics. One header (2 x exhaust valves and 2 x pipes) is a calculated length longer than the other, before running into the Y piece for the single home made silencer (a megaphone front and race can tube end).
    It "comes on cam" at 6,000 RPM and carries on up to 11,000 RPM. At cruising speeds it sounds like a 4T single. As it hits the power the exhaust note changes into a 4 stroke like warbling roar, because of the header pipe length differences.
    My favourite bike engine sound is the cat trapped in a washing machine howl of a 2T 3 cylinder with K&N filters and expansion pipes. Not the best as cafe racers as they don't like corners.

    I love them all, but one stands out in my memory and has for years. I was hitch hiking through New Jersey on my way south. I got out at the exit, and walked down into the outskirts of a small city for a cup of coffee at a diner. Must have been about nine AM on a Sunday morning and I heard one of the sweetest sounds ever. It was one of the early CB 750's in a mild chopper with a Kerker 4 into 1. It was in perfect tune, stopped at the intersection waiting for the green. Sweet quiet burbling sound as it idled there. Then, the light changed and a long smooth acceleration, up through the gears. I knew then what they meant by "a symphony of sound" from a motorcycle.
    It probably wasn't just the sound alone that caused it to remain with me all these many years. It was the very first rigid frame CB 750 I had seen, and the proportions were just right. It was not at all flashy as many customs were at that time. It just looked purpose built, simple; nothing there that wasn't needed. Just a moment in time. Just the right moment. And that sweet, sweet sound...

    Had a Guzzi Daytona RS pulled on me from a stoplight the other day. Like watching a run away bullet train. It was magnificent.

      Ultra80s The V4 has an amazing sound. Unfortunately, it is very rare, or almost
      nonexistent between the Cafe Racer machines. Maybe there is just 1 or 2
      VFR projects, but nothing special. That's why i never mentioned about this engine. But the
      principles about V engines were explained with the Moto Guzzi engine
      example. Thanks for your comment. Cheers.

    You missed one. To me, the best sound is a V4 with twin exhaust. My particular bike gets compliments when I am in traffic. When I make it how on the road, there is never anyone near enough to issue the compliments. I usually say the only thing better than the sound of a V-twin is two of them.

    Sempre achei o som dos V2 semelhante com os V8 small block!
    Particularmente, o som que eu mais gosto é o dos 2 cilindros em linha (boxer), é o típico som de uma motocicleta, não se parece em nada com o som de um carro. E os monocilíndricos também tem seu charme.

    Like with so many things, sound is a personal preference. For instance my V Max with a 4 to 1 header had a sound that for me was as sweet as any symphony. I couldn’t rev the engine without a smile on my face. It excited me. I am just beginning my first cafe build. I chose a bike not chosen by many. It doesn’t lend itself well but I want to try it anyway. It is a 1986 goldwing. I plan on a 4 to 1 header on this as well. I hope I will enjoy the sound as much as my V Max. Oh my every day bike is a Moto Guzzi California 1400. I’ve put on about 30000 miles so far. It has been a wonderful experience so far

    Earlier this season one of the group I ride with had a Triumph "Sprint" three-cylinder inline with an aftermarket exhaust and I was incredibly impressed with the sound of that bike. It snarled like a big predator, which I believe is the word you meant to use in English as opposed to "snore." A "snore" is a noise made whilst sleeping. Otherwise a commendable presentation. ~ S ~

    • @RACER_TV
      @RACER_TV  10 років тому

      TheCarablanco Well, when i say snoring, I mean the vibrating sound of the engine, caused by the timing between the sparks. In Portuguese, we also use "Snore" to the sound caused whilst sleeping.But "Snoring" can also be used to describe this vibrating sound of engines.Thanks for sharing your opinion. Cheers.

    • @RACER_TV
      @RACER_TV  9 років тому

      +Tom H You are right. There are some tricks to disguise the sound of a 4 cylinders, and transform it in a twin sound. It's not the same, but at least it looks like.
      But in the end, it is all a matter of personal taste.
      Good luck for your project.

    There are a couple of things missing on this video (great videos, by-the-way). Many twins have 180 degree crankshafts, two that I used to own did Honda 350 and 450, whereas the CB175 and 200's had 360 cranks as per British twins. They sound completely different.The whole point of individual pipes is to ensure maximum power, Honda did not go all those years racing multi-cylinder 4 strokes with individual pipes without a damn good reason. Individual pipes weigh a lot more, have more drag and get in the way, the answer is power. Each cylinder has a pipe tuned to give maximum power over the rev range desired.When you join pipes, this seriously interferes with the acoustic supercharging. 3 into 1 exhausts can get away with it but 4 into 1 have serious interference. 2 into 1 on a 180 degree crank engine would be silly, unless it is for style only.Many have 4 into 2, but with 1-3-4-2 firing (the most common), the pipes of cylinders 1 and 4 should be paired, as should 2 and 3, to get even pulses and consistent acoustic lengths.Many so-called café racers have pipes "designed" with absolutely no consideration to the acoustic lengths, some even with straight tubes all the way. The same applies to inlets, where many stick on the K&N style filters. These usually have a very short tube length, way shorter than the factory tube. This is OK if you are going to rev it to the extreme (i.e. take the ratio of the lengths (from inlet valve to end of tube) of stock versus the new and multiply that by the original max power revs eeekk!!! you'll be on the wrong side of the red on the tacho). These are all tuned lengths, for the exhaust the lengths are a lot longer because the higher pressure, hotter gas has a higher speed of sound - the reverse cone shape means that long taper causes a negative pressure at the exhaust valve, helping remove the exhaust gases, then the reverse taper sends a positive pressure wave back into the cylinder just as the exhaust valve shuts - supercharging the cylinder with fresh fuel-air mixture that had snuck out the exhaust valve.Changing the reverse cone has a distinct effect on the sweet spot of the power band (in conjunction with the cam of course).I've never had one but I always love the sound of a triple (except the 180 degree Jota that is).

    Mais um vídeo ao nível do melhor que se faz pelo mundo, senão mesmo o melhor dentro do género.
    BRILHANTE!
    Um dica que sai da minha modesta opinião, no caso um COMPLEMENTO a este vídeo que trata da musicalidade:
    - um vídeo que fale e mostre o comportamento e o temperamento de cada uma das configurações de motor já mostradas e muito bem explicadas.
    Sim, porque temos a música mas a forma como é "entregue" aos ouvidos do piloto é bastante distinta.
    Ou seja, para alguns, a melhor música pode não ter a melhor dirigibilidade, etc, etc, etc.
    Um tema mais "complicado" mas perfeitamente à altura do autor destes vídeos, não tenho dúvidas.
    Dito isto, as minhas FELICITAÇÕES pelo trabalho.
    Venha o próximo.

      zardportugal Muuuuuuito obrigado pelo elogio. Gostei da sua sugestão, e já tomei nota para um futuro video. Por acaso já tinha pensado em fazer um video sobre o som dos vários tipos de escapes que existem no mercado para as cafe racers. Mas tambem gostei da sua sugestão. É algo para começar a pensar na melhor forma de o demonstrar em video. Mais uma vez, muuito obrigado pelas simpáticas palavras e pela ótima sugestão. Abraço.

    • @zardportugal
      @zardportugal 10 років тому +2

      Excelente.
      Mas a "logística" é mais complicada porque será preciso ter vários escapes para o mesmo modelo, isto para manter a carburação e a admissão, vectores que mudam o som dos motores.
      Uma grande idéia, seja como for.
      Se a isso houver a possibilidade de uma ida ao banco de ensaio..... ouro sobre azul.

    • @RACER_TV
      @RACER_TV  10 років тому

      zardportugal Pois. Não é fácil ser o mais realista possivel. Mas penso que dará pelo menos para transmitir a ideia geral da nota sonora dos escapes. Já estive a ver vários videos com escapes iguais aos da minha Honda Cb 125, e mesmo em motas de cilindrada superior(e com 2 cilindros), a nota sonora do escape é practicamente idêntica. Mesmo não sendo tão realista como devería, acho que irá ser muito útil para muitos Cafe Racers. Vamos ver o que consigo fazer. Abraço.

      Estive a ver o seu video "Honda 750 Sevenfifty - Bezerro", mas parece que são da versão curta. Os meus escapes têm 70 cm de comprimento. A não ser que já tenha comprado outros escapes entretanto?

    Ok, I love the big singles, high compression inline fours; along w/ 2 cycle inline twins (like the Yamaha's); but it's not the sound I love so much as they way they perform; in their own right, as individuals; yes different, but oh so beautiful of a feeling....when you ride them.

    Great video...👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. Just to add some info, if I may.. Beside the engine configuration, the pattern or rhythm of the engine timing is also greatly influenced by the shape of the crankshaft. For example, Ninja 250 & Benelli TNT 350 & Triumph Bonneville, they all have 2 cylinders in line engine (a.k.a parallel twin), but they all have different engine sound character, which caused by different timing between the first cylinder and the second one, due to their different crankshaft timing.. same thing happens to many bikes which have V twin engine, but somehow have so different engine sound character.. Other example: When Honda built a cruiser bike named VFC750 Magna, they took the engine from their sports bike VFR750 Interceptor (a V4 engine), and they intentionally changed the crankshaft, in order to create a different engine sound which somehow a little bit closer to a V Twin engine.. Well, just a thought... take care & keep up the good job, guys...✌🏽✌🏽👍🏼👍🏼

    It would be a fair comparison if all bikes in the video would have the same exhaust.
    Silencers can make huge difference in sound, even the pipe length.
    If you are "experienced" you can ignore the silencer and focus on the engine sound itself to compare.

    Adoro o canal e toda a sua dedicação as café Racer, mas sinceramente isto do som do barulho e para quem anda 5 ou 10 min. De mota.
    Agora quem anda uma hora ou mais de certeza que quer um escape muito silencioso ou então mete algudão ou outra coisa qualquer nos ouvidos para não ouvir o barulho.
    Se não já sabemos que o resultado é uma cabeça a bombar!

    • @RACER_TV

      Obrigado amigo pelo apoio ao canal. Em relação ao barulho, se tiver uma mota relativamente potente mais de 500 cc, não será assim tão incómodo quanto possa parecer. Só mesmo depois de 1h e meia ou mais. Mas numa mota de pequena cilindrada, aí sim. Ao final de 30 minutos torna-se incómodo por andar sempre em alta rotação. :) Um abraço.

    the sound of a thrashed 900 Ducati on the over-run in a tunnel is exquisite.
    So too, the Manx Norton, the 450 Desmo & the BSA Gold Star .
    Laverda Jotas(120 +180`cranks) made different evocative sounds;
    and the 3 cyl Tiumph Daytona etc barking/singing could lead a man astray/
    BUT; 1 time; at Brands Hatch I heard a demonstration of the 6 cyl 250 Honda.
    A Shrill "Tone" Electrifying; almost unreal; Like nothing else I`ve ever heard.
    but the most charismatic of all.the Moto Guzzi V8, luckily recorded on vinyl,
    its sound can be found, on UA-cam; sounds of the IoM TT 1956/7, I think.
    By Murray Walker`s father Graham.

      yes, but it`s so rare,
      I still remember a bitsa Norton, with a long stroke engine, a friend built,
      40+ years ago. Went like snotoffastik. Sounded like a machine gun.
      It left my T120 for dead! But he WAS nuts. & a mechanical genius.
      later, I had the last 450 Ducati desmo, very similar. only smaller lighter & OILTIGHT. It handled SO WELL.it was unbelievable. A Brilliant little toy,
      It Ate rear spokes, cl` cables & ign system, passengers hated it, but I loved it.
      I then had a Long love affair with the Moto Guzzi 850 LeMans (mk1, mod`d)
      which Growls & Howls. Never lost control under braking, Strong, simple fast & surefooted. Quite beautiful, Also is so long running; it was never really improved;
      switches,propstand etc.if anyth`they spoiled em. Highly recommended. gvfm.
