- This Maserati Mistral was the most difficult restoration I've had by far. It turned out far from great but video made some decent tips and how-to's. On to the next one!

I just dug one of these out of my garden and I want to restore it. Mine has the cap wheels as well. Thanks for the video!
I recently acquired one of these with the cap wheels also. Did you found out any more info on it? Great video! Tough break on the break but all came together in the end..
I think this is the roughest casting I've seen you deal with. Love the paint, the stance gives this car a different look, which I also like.
Granted the base broke, but challenges arise in all occasions.
How could someone dislike this video? This restoration was (as always) amazing! Keep up the good work ;)
The more subs/views you get the more dislikes :) Trust me, the good far outweighs the bad. Thank you Alex!
@@WheelsNThangs :)
I watched your video to find out more about the capped wheels,I’m expanding my collection into 1969 castings because I’ve completed all my sweet 16 cars. The Maserati Mestel always stuck out to me as a future resto, most of the cars I’ve seen for sale cheap($50+) have wheel issues so I’ll be ordering some, and I’ll also make sure I find one with a restorable windshield because as you mentioned the replacement doesn’t fit well. But nice Job on your car. I’m a 1st time watcher.👍
Turned out beautiful compared to what the start was. I love these videos .
Thank you!
You have to heat the new plastic windshields before you install them... use a hair dryer as a heat gun gets too hot. After heating they fit much better.
baremetalHW Thanks! I’ve done that on previous models but this one is actually a tad too short. The whole restoration was a nightmare!
@@WheelsNThangs yeah... having done one or two of these myself I can agree they can be a real pain in the a**.... but still, it came out looking rather nice!
I am subbed to both of you
Great effort on it, maybe didn’t meet your expectations, but I’m sure you learned something along the way. In some of baremetal’s vids he says those plastic windshields are a terrible fit until you heat them up to make them soft and push them into place. Thanks for posting
Thank you! Actually this glass was a bit too short. Kinda strange.
Good job for what you had to work with!!
This has got to be the most disappointing restore for you. I love that you show it . Watch all the time. And was disappointing to me
Very Noice. You did a superb job with the car. The cross was a prayer that someone would do a restoration of the car.
Ha! Thank you!
@@WheelsNThangs no problem at all. Was the other matchbox a Rolls Royce?
@@CallMeMrStopmotion Holy cow you have a good eye, it is a Rolls!
@@WheelsNThangs I have seen lots of cars in lots of movies and angles, so I can recognize a car I know of at nearly any angle. For instance, if you got a matchbox Ford Ltd police car and put it in a faraway angle I could still recognize it cause I'm very familiar with the body-style.

Great Job again My Friend, Not gonna Lie though I like when you Video you painting it Youre Like Bob Ross with Cars...
Thank you Robert! Well this wasn't my happy little tree :)
Nice work on bringing this one back to life! Have you ever tried Easy Off oven cleaner to remove paint on plastic? I use this all the time and it works great, just make sure to use the Blue spray can, as it's less aggressive. Sometimes the old Mattel factories would use whatever axles they had around if they ran short on a production run. I have the same car with cap wheels ;)
Thank you! I haven't tried Easy Off yet but will eventually. Good to know this wasn't the only one with cap wheels!
A drop of motor oil is all you need to lubricate your tap. It will help to keep your tap sharp, and it will also attract zinc swarf so that your tapped threads will be cut cleaner.
Looks great!!! I’m such a sucker for the spectra green... 😍 And very nice job on macgyvering the restore 👍 🙂
Thank you Anne! I thought of you when I was talking about the post portion.
There are always one or two jokes or comments that make me laugh so hard😂 keep up the good quality!
I try :)
Nice job! I think it looks good 😎👍
Thank you!
Their is a type of low-temperature brazing rod called Muggyweld which can be used for repairing zinc and aluminum. It has a melting point of 350F - well below the 700F of zinc die-castings.
Hmm.. I'd be afraid to try it on some of these. I'm not sure any of them are real zinc, I've heard stories of castings melting in the oven at 220 degrees to bake paint. I'd still like to try it though!
Hey, I love ur vids and thx for the cool content.
Thank you so much!
A fine result of what used to be a basket case. Question: if you decided ahead of time to faux vinyl the roof, why didn't you first prime it to try to eliminate the pitting? And can we see a follow up video when its proper wheels arrive? Thanks!
Thank you Anthony! The roof was an afterthought as I started painting I noticed the pitting even more so figured it would be worth a try :)
@@WheelsNThangs A question ... What is the diameter of the screw used (2mm or 1.8mm) ?. Thank you
@@arturvian Closer to 2mm.. Maybe a tad over.
really cool car! I have one from Siku, also made in the 60s. Looks really nice from what you had to work with
Thank you! I'll have to check out the Siku.
No offense I love your hard work but you seem tired sometimes but I understand what you do so big hug
Ha! I’m good!
You mentioned copper plating...that would make a really nice little custom!
We'll see if it works!
Baremetal hw did a video on it
@@chevys1016 I saw his, this process is different. If it works that is...
Looks better than before
At least in the way of paint and fixing the chassis (the base of the car same thing)
But this also a good example of how even knowing what you're doing, the project isn't necessarily going to cooperate with you
Thanks Zak!
Grat for your beautiful site, do you have any trick to remove and polish tamiya smoke for polycarbonate spray wrongly applied on a plastic windscreen?
Hmm. Not sure. Maybe try soaking it in the brake fluid.
Is there a way of filling the pitting? I could see doing it but would it work if you choose to use Spectraflame paint
The only way to fill when using spectra flame would be to fill in the holes, prime, paint it glass black, then chrome and last throw down the spectra flame. You could use some silver and skip most of the steps but it won't look like a true spectra job.
Fan of ur channel. Good job.
Thank you!
The cross in the roof of the car was its grave. Rip hot wheel classic. Rest and peace. Can you weald the base by using a torch?
LMAO!
I’ve tried to solder then before but have never successfully got it to stick. These cars are also very soft metal.
Resto looks great! *maybe you could use a small amount of body putty to fix the putting on the room, b it wouldn’t show through the black vinyl* btw repo windshields usually have to be heated up a bit so they can be pliable enough to fit properly
Thanks! Yeah, the roof was an afterthought so I just shot it. I should have mentioned the glass was actually too short but fit ok.
Did you heat the glass up before inserting into the car? It can help!
I should have mentioned the glass was actually too short but fit ok
Very nice 👍🏼 Nice save on the base.
Thank you!
Beautiful color, good choice.
Thank you!
neat one , love the green
Awesome job buddy it looks great.. :) ;)
Couldn't you use a tiny bit of bondo to fill in the pitting or would it show through the spectra flame?
It would show through.
Nice. Have you ever thought about using filler primer and wet sanding for those pits?
The paint is spectraflame which is transparent so it would show through. Primer will not work, the base has to be almost chrome.
Use a hair dryer on the glass once it's in, then you can push it in to fit better.
I should have mentioned the glass was actually too short but fit ok.
Can you use poly filer for those pits?
Alright I’ll admit it your restoration video of the Maserati might be a little better than mine lol. Also I like how that was customized from the start lol
Mold and remake the window? I mentioned this recently on a newer video. Is it possible?
Sure
Your work is great and I really enjoy your videos...but the finished product here reminds me of the female gremlin with all the lipstick from Gremlins 2. Gave me a good chuckle.
Thank you. Hehe. Yes, it's quite the Gremlin!
I used to have a hotwheels car that had caps on the back and bearings on the front. So, I always assumed that there was no hard line between when they started using them. The people assembling the cars likely just stuck on whatever was given to them, and if it matched, great. If not, just use them until we run out of the old stock.
You're probably right. What a cruddy job that would be, they can make mistakes :)
@@WheelsNThangs: it's a fairly common problem in the guitar world, when trying to put a manufacturing date on a Fender stratocaster built between the years of 54-76. The serials were stamped on the neck plates, but those plates were all dumped into a big bin, and grabbed out in random order for use. A serial plate could spend weeks if not months or even years banging around the bottom of that bin before someone finally used it on a guitar.
Wow!
Dude I have a masarati that is missing a bearing, the base is too short and the suspension isn’t sold for stock parts. Help?
I'd keep a look at on eBay.
@@WheelsNThangs There is no replacement on ebay that i could find
Nice restoration, did you ever think about using a filler primer to cover up that pitting.
It would show through the spectraflame paint.
Redlineshop 👍Thank you for the Tipp 😁
You should cover the body with a filler primer or thick layer of primer before the paint to avoid imperfections. Good job anyway 👍
Cars n' Opinion you can’t do that with spectraflame paint, it will show through.
Very nice work, I'm new to this so you and a couple of others on UA-cam are my "Mentors." I'm working on a couple right now (for my channel) I'm always having trouble drilling and tapping. You baremetal and Marty make it look so easy, it seems like my drill bit doesn't cut very well and the tap doesn't either. What's the secret?
Thank you sir, I just subbed! Hmm, just use a good sharp bit and a variable speed drill. What bits are you using? Tapping can be tricky sometimes, rubbing some wax on the threads of the tap should help out. Trust me, it doesn't always go smooth as shown in this video.
@@WheelsNThangs I ordered DU-BRO tap and bit set from online seller. I was thinking about buying a "quality" bit from Menard's or something to try that.
I think I just need to remind myself that I'm not working on a picnic table in the backyard with a half inch drill bit where I can just muscle through...this is more like watch making...patience grasshopper...let the drill make the cut, not brute strength.
I use the Du-Bro tap and bit myself. Mayne you have a bad set?
@@WheelsNThangs I just completed a project (on my channel), like I said, I just need to be more patient with it.
I really thought that base was unsalvageable, good job👍
Thank you!
Hey I’ve got a 69 mustang hot wheel that needs a restore its one of my last ones as I’m 16 years of age I have given them to my little brother but I’ve kept this one and I would like it to be fixed and put in a Display case ( would like it in sugar apple green) thanks
I found a cap style wheel at my grandparents house yesterday
Awesome Chanel. Have you ever done a delorean ?
Thank you! I haven't had one yet.
Nice job , maybe you coukd've filled the pits in the roof before adding the black but other than that it looks good 👍
Thanks! Yeah, the roof was an afterthought so I just shot it.
Why no use putty for repair the body imperfections before painting?
You can aplly one fine primer, after puttty, finish sand paper(800) other fine aplication of primer and painting.
Spectraflame is s transparent style paint and any primer or putty would show through.
@@WheelsNThangs and if you use a aclad II metal paint after the last primer base for a similar base of steel ?
I have some of that and will be trying it soon :)
Good job!
Thank you!
Fine for display.
Would a high build primer hide all the pitting ?
Spectraflame is s transparent style paint and any primer or putty would show through.
@@WheelsNThangs I forgot about it being transparent oops
Tengo algunos carritos de esos también están viejitos :( saludos desde Perú
Mistral? more like a mistrial? ba-dum-tish!
just kidding! considering everything, i think it came out fine. never seen one of these restored yet, so that was pretty great. think i'll check out the patreon now.
Ha! Thank you!
I really like your wood board, you make it?
Thanks! Yes, it's just a cutting board I made.
Pretty nice restoration. It's sad that all the pitting make these black marks tho. And in a way, it's sad to know you may have something rare, but that it's that damaged. I wonder if it's one of those crumblers I heard about.
I doubt it's rare but who knows. Crumblers? Tell me more!
@@WheelsNThangs I've just re-read, and this car can't be a crumbler. Crumbers were cars from the '71 line with metal that didn't mix correctly and also had too much impurities in the mix. The metal, when it cooled down wouldn't "stretch" and they would develop stress cracks all over and thus, some of them were deep enough to make the HW crumble in pieces. But as this car is a '69 casting, it's not a crumbler. Tho, as you said, this car should've sported the bearing wheels, not the capped ones, as capped wheels came out in '70. Maybe this car was part of a late '69 batch and they somehow got capped wheels like the '70 HWs?
@@chassegallerie2910 I never knew about the "crumblers" that's good to know! Yeah, I dunno what to think of this one. All the sites state it had Delrin hubs and thought the caps came later so it's a complete mystery. Supposedly this was only produced in '69 maybe a '70 slipped through the cracks?
@@WheelsNThangs Perhaps. Who know? Or, as I said, it was a late '69 batch and they put on '70 wheels, maybe 'cuz they had gotten thru all the Delrin hubs?
polish the metal bumper/base ?
I cleaned my cars in mineral spirits but some I didn't wipe off with a paper towel . Just let them sit in the spirits. I will be sure to clean my cars better from now on.
It's hard to believe the junk that comes off!
Great custom
Thanks Nash!
Tanks!
Hardly a disaster, just full of challenges!! - how's that for a 1/2 full glass?
Perfect :)
just a couple comments here... First and foremost, if I were going to paint the roof black, I would have definitely used a dab of spot putty to fill those pits, as well as a bit of primer. The base looks alright and the JB Weld is stronger than the white metal, so it should hold up ok! it's always a disappointment when something goes wrong like that but it's the nature of the game, maybe you'll find a really BEAT donor for another base... anyway... 👍
and they REALLY need to go back to the drawing board with that glass!!! Wow!
I should have mentioned the glass was actually too short but fit ok
Thank you! I was kinda disgusted a bit so the roof was an afterthought and I just shot it
Can you also try chrome color on the cars? ;)
I've done one video with some cheap Testors chrome but will make another sometime in the future.
Great!
Great job
Thank you John!
I see your reply to the question asking if you could have welded it? My question is could you have not soldered it?
MrBloobeetle I’ve tried to solder then before but have never successfully got it to stick. These cars are also very soft metal.
WheelsNThangs also have you tried methylated spirit to strip paint off of plastic? Or Dettol? I’ve had a lot of success using these on plastic.
I haven't tried the Dettol yet but may in the future. Thanks for the tips!
The black stripe looks like nail polish
next time you have a base like that try using super glue and baking soda
Hello.... im from brazil, can you help me?? I would like to restore some cars, like you show... can you?
mine is still somewhat purple
Just curious how you're snapping taps. when you didn't back out the tap in the video the entire time you were doing the threads I almost wonder if you didn't know how to use a tap correctly? You're supposed to thread in, reverse threads out and clean material before going deeper.
I never said I'm snapping taps, I said I had once a long time ago. I mentioned other people snapping taps. The video is cut a bit, I show my process in other videos.
What would happen if you paint a car with a brush and not spray it
You would see brush marks.
thats a beauty
It’s OKAY. But idk. Man I wanna do this myself but the success rate is a bitch. That roof is haggard. Well done tho. I’m just OCD.
Man I can see why you say disaster. You did your best but man, that thing was rough.
Yes indeed it was!
Compared to Matchboxes, its Hot Wheel's plastic wheels that makes it look cheap.. seriously couldn't even be bothered to stamp on door handles?
Very true.
And I thought my Mistral was rough jeez
I have a car that you might like to costomise. It is a 1982 Shelby Cobra. I do not know what your p.o. box is.
nice!!
Thanks Joe!

Nice after watching your video on the Ferrari I went ahead and Found Me one as well as a Open Wheel Lotus for 10 bucks for both I don't know if I'm going to restore them or not they look pretty cool as is great videos check out my channel if you like🚒
Thank you!
Isn't a god fearing individual somebody with a bit of a twisted mind? also if anyone is wondering if it can be welded/soldered , the answer is heat and Hot Wheels don't mix i.imgur.com/pfqXS6x.jpg
Ha! I suppose it depends on how you look at it. If you believe in God you would be God fearing. If you don't believe it God and think those that do are nuts, I suppose those believers could be looked at as twisted :) You are correct on the solder! Me experience is that it either melts the car or just doesn't stick. Thanks again for watching!
@@WheelsNThangs
Just joshing with that one i'm pretty sure some people thinks we are pretty twisted for restoring and collecting toys and spending one too many nights in the shed tinkering with tiny cars mainly for the satisfaction it brings to do so.
