With that level of workmanship I would probably not let them back on site and gone for a independent expert review and then hand it over to a solicitor. Make sure you have family legal on your house insurance and then get them to pay for the court case. It makes my blood boil when people in business make comments like you refer to. You gave them instruction, they accepted the job, did the work and you paid them money. A contract exists and is governed under the consumer rights act.
To be fair to them, it was four and a bit years after installation and the workmanship guarantee would have been five years. It was more the attitude I objected to. I think it was installed in a rush it get it done before the feed in tariff ended.
