Warm Audio WA47jr vs Audio Technica AT2020 - Vocals Too Thin? Try This!

- Опубліковано 5 лют 2023
- Today I am answering a question for my viewer @zachpitt9249 and anyone else wanting fuller sounding vocal recordings. Assuming we are sticking with condenser microphones, using a microphone with a K47 style capsule can lead to fuller sounding vocals. Try one out for yourself and see if it works for you.

Yess! Another great video! Super proud of you baby!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you baby❤❤❤
The most HONEST mic info and reviews on UA-cam!
Thank you very much!!!
Great Video, great advice, Another alternative is the sE Electronics 4400a or the sE Electronics T2, both really great mics, and can be used for voiceovers and as instrument mics as well.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it! I have no experience with sE mics but their T2 actually looked very interesting. I'd like to try it out someday. Thanks for watching!
Awesome vid and blue light!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it!!
You're a really smart guy.
Thank you very much for the compliment!
im in this situation right now so thanks
You're welcome!
Hello! I really need to decide on what should i get.. my voice is kinda like sam smith. Should i get this warm audio jr or the rode nt2a. I hope u reply
Needed this. every mic i look at is too upfront harsh
Glad you found this helpful! Thanks for watching!
Im interested in getting the WA47jr. THe problem is that its really mid forward and i'm affraid it will bring out the nasality and room rumble out.
K47 style capsules are known for being more mid forward than other capsules. This is to help it cut through a busy mix in a different way since it has a more rolled off top end. The mid forwardness can be dealt with using EQ and mic placement, but if you already have a really nasal voice or a really aggressive mid forward voice, then K47 style mics might not be the best option for you as they will exaggerate those characteristics more.
@@subtonic24 already read a review whwre it says it sounds nasally. Not interested
Hey man thank you for making this video i really appreciate it a lot this is so good and i love it. btw are you familiar with rode nt1 what would you think about rode nt1 over a k47 style mic?
Hey you're welcome man! Glad you found my video helpful! I use to own the NT1 so I am very familiar with it. By far one of my least favorite mics i've ever used/owned. You well get more low end, but the high end is very grainy sounding and harsh once you start processing it (kinda like the AT2020), the mids feel weak so it doesn't sound as full as it could, and for a mic that is suppose to be nearly flat, it is also really sibilant which is not good. Would not recommend.
@@subtonic24 thanks man can i clarify again did you mean rode nt1 color black version with small bump on top end is grainy when boosted not the nt1-a silver because i saw reviews saying nt1-a is harsher. but i didn't know that nt1 have grainy sibilant sound when in post cause there are 2 variation of this mic?
@@zachpitt9249 Yup I'm talking about the black NT1. That top end is grainy once you start boosting it to modern music standards. And it's very sibilant before you even start boosting it! The NT1 is slightly better than the NT1-A but not by much from my experience.
@@subtonic24 thanks man one last thing do you think i will get smooth sounding vocal with wa47jr like justin bieber. do you think he uses 47 style mic like in this song? ua-cam.com/video/Fp8msa5uYsc/v-deo.html
@@zachpitt9249 After some processing, you can definitely get there! The top end of the WA47jr is smooth enough to get into this territory without being grainy or harsh. No idea which mic he used but he records with the Sony C800g, ELA M 251, U47, and U67, so it's possible. At the end of the day tho, the engineer is the one who made his vocals sound like this.
Hi sir
i want one mic for vocal hip hop

which one to buy?
I have no experience with the Lewitt or the SE so I have no idea. Try them all out if you can and see which one matches your voice best!
Is the wa 47 fet asignificantly different enough to upgrade from the wa47jr?
I like having a mix that doesn’t need a separate power supply, don’t know if I should get the wa47 and keep the 47jr. Or just have a wa47 and wa47 fet
I don't think the 47fet is drastically different from the 47jr, and you lose out on the versatility of multiple polar patterns. I personally wouldn't look at it.
That at2020 sounds way clearer and articulate. The warm has more body! I’ve heard both sound great. Pick whichever sounds best for your voice and go with it!
Yup I agree. Either one of these will work. Just depends on what sound profile you are going for, or which sound fits the source best. Thanks for watching!
Go with the warm it sounds more professional and will get you better results in the end it handles eq better and doesn’t have a spitty top end! You can add high end to the 47 and achieved the same clarity while having a natural sounding low end!
@@mixedbygip8938thanks heaps
Help..! I have Rode nt1a and shure sm58. My voice sounds a bit harsh on nt1a, so I started using sm58 instead.
Now I want to upgrade to a condenser mic again. Will this Warm 47jr provide balanced voice or should I go for the high end models, like Warm u87 R2.
Both the 47jr and WA87 will be upgrades from the NT1A as they both have smoother and more rolled off top end so take you pick. Either one will be fine!
Should I get the rode nt2a or the warm audio jr I hope u reply thanks 😊@@subtonic24
@@ZenyHilario-eq3ip Having used and mixed with both mics, I prefer the WA47jr. I think it sounds much better than the NT2A.
This is just another case for mixer>interface, IMO.
You talking about using a mixer for the on board EQ over any interface?
@@subtonic24 Essentially, yes. :) My MG12XU absolutely bullies my Scarlett, losing only in portability.
I got the wa47jr months ago and I loved it, voice feels way fuller.
I had got extra money and bought a wa87 r2, but I felt like the brightness made me sound like a little kid. Should I just get the wa 47 tube, or would the wa 47 get better a significant upgrade from the wa47jr?
The WA47 will have some differences from the WA47jr due to the tube circuit and transformer, but the differences do not always mean it is an "upgrade". You'll have to listen for yourself and decide if you like the sound and if the differences justify the cost difference.
@@subtonic24what about the wa 47 fet compared to the wa47jr? It has a transformer
@@kayjay4952 I haven't noticed a drastic difference between transformer and transformerless mics. And the 47fet loses versatility due to not having multiple polar patterns. I personally don't find much value in it.
My experience after trying a bunch of mics is the MXL CR89 is the most full sounding mic I’ve encountered. I’ve also heard the Lauten LA 320 and the Shure KSM 32 are also good for filling out a vocal sound
Nice! I haven't tried MXL or Lauten mics, but I've used a KSM32 before.
how would the warm audio mic do in a untreated room ?
Not very well just like almost all condenser mics that exist, even the expensive ones. Treat your room (doesn't have to be expensive) or grab a dynamic mic. The dynamic mic option will help a bit but it is not an absolute fix to an untreated room. Hope this helps!
What’s a good upgrade from the Scarlett solo interface? I’ve had it for about 3 years now
From my personal experience, the UA Apollo Twin X. I have heard great things about the UA Volt Series, Audient interfaces, and SSL interfaces as well. Definitely take a look at those.
@@subtonic24 what should be the biggest difference I notice if I get an Apollo twin?
@@officialchannel1292 Slightly lower noise preamps (easier to power SM7B without needing a cloudlifter), higher gain preamps, and access to Unison Preamp technology to change your sound to whatever you want.
What about the Neumann tlm 103?
I love the TLM103. It will definitely sound more full than the AT2020 and a lot of other mics. It has a big bass response, even more than the U87. It does have a very smooth but bright top end. If that is the sound you want and you're willing to pay for it, then go for it! ✌🏾
hi bro, you know what is better, I'm not sure if I want buy the WA47jr or AT4040?
As far as sound goes, if you want brighter but grainy sound, AT4040. If you want a smoother but darker sound, WA47jr. WA47jr can be EQ'd brighter if needed and won't sound grainy. As far as what you get for the $299 price tag, WA47jr is better. You get more features and accessories for your money.
@@subtonic24 ohh thanks for response my question I buy WA47jr good look and I follow you :D
@@felipeicr847 You're welcome! And thank you very much! I really appreciate it 😊
@@subtonic24 What do you think about the Sennheiser mk4 ?
@@rubenn7212 I have no experience with the MK4. I'd love to try that mic and the MK8 someday.
What mic is on your left
Warm Audio WA47jr
I recently orderd the Clone of the U47 from GotoToolz GT47 i havent received it yet but i wanted to add more mics for my podcast how . I'll give u an update as it comes. That mic looks cool Warm Audio WA47jr (ill look around for one ) How do u like it ? pros cons
@@subtonic24
hey man i found out that wa47 tube are more rounder than 47jr can i make it to sound like tube wa 47 with some equalization to wa 47jr?
The WA47 has a tube circuit inside, a transformer, and a bigger body size. All of those things contribute to the sound of the mic and cannot be replicated by EQ'ing the 47jr. The difference you hear is the transformerless circuit of the 47jr vs the tube & transformer circuit of the WA47 (both mics have the exact same capsule, but the circuits inside are different). If you want that more "round" 47 sound, you have to get the WA47, or any other tube U47 clone.
@@subtonic24thanks man btw can i ask if wa-47jr sound round enough to your ears or it's lacking?
@@zachpitt9249 Sounds round enough to my ears, but it's not about my ears. It's about your ears since you'll be the one using it. Does it sound round enough to you?
@@subtonic24 it's round enough to me btw have you try using wa 47jr on rappers and pop singers modern songs that requires crispy vocals?
@@zachpitt9249 I haven't used it on a rapper yet. I've used it on pop, EDM, and a pop rock female vocal. No complaints here, especially the rock vocal! She has a bright thin voice and the WA47jr made her voice sound thicc lol
Is AT 2020 is good for harmonica ?
Yes it can be good for hamonica.
@@subtonic24 Thank you so much 🙏🙏
Bro the at2020 is thin azzzzz
